Black ship! Black ship! Black ship! *** Korrozia Metalla (“Corrosion of Metal”) are pioneers of Russian extreme metal, with their roots going back to the Moscow Rock Lab of the 1980s. In many ways, their work mirrors that of Western extreme metal bands of this period, and it is often difficult to tell how serious or ironic their offensive public presentation is - but it certainly is offensive. From the beginning, they were out to shock - under the constant leadership of Sergei “Pauk” (“Spider”) Troitsky, their thrash metal songs frequently featured themes satanism, ultra-nationalism and extreme violence. Their live shows, banned in some municipalities, always feature strippers performing with the band on stage. From early in their career, they developed a loyal fanbase of so-called “Metalists”, Russian equivalents of early metalheads; later, their use of Nazi themes and regalia also attracted skinheads.The lineup has changed over the years, with some 40 musicians having been part of Korrozia at some point or another, but Pauk has retained all creative control. Korrozia Metalla seems destined to continue their over-the-top show of force for quite a while.
