@DarkWardancer6 жыл бұрын
SpyMonkey3D I think this screaming is actually a "kiai". Its a breathing technique in every japanese martial art and many other martial arts use the same principle. The idea is to use the muscleforce used for pushing air out of the body rapidly (the scream itself is initially so the sensei can hear you using the technique and becomes a habit over time) in your attacking motion. Thats why they start screaming when releasing the arrow. It is simply to maximise the power put into the arrow efficiently. If it actually helps to significantly give the arrow more punch is another question, but it does however help to create a motion routine which is the most important thing for accuracy and stamina conservation. Ofc i could be totally wrong and they are just shouting for the fun of it in this demonstration. i dont practise kyudo.

The reason for shouting is a little mysterious, reading some comments below it gives me the idea that a couple of thousand archers doing this would help give commanders auditive cues as to rate of fire all along the line. A slow down might tell the general there are heavy casualties in a sector or an ammo resupply is required. There is a reason for everything, especially in warfare. Anyone know for sure?

I'm a noob in historical war culture, but i find your comment genius. It may explain a lot !

In martial arts people shout when they do some movements to get out more power and strength; and in asian cultures there's this kind of thinking about internal energy that you can optimize by using shouts or onomatopeyes. Also shouting makes you breath better because you take out all the air from your lungs. Also maybe to shot at the same time (?). But if I imagine the chaos of a battle, all the stress you have to be usefull for you army, and also the need of keeping your breath when you are pointing the target, maybe shouting when you have already realesed the arrow would be good to make a deep breath and not to lose skills due to stress and bad breathing. Sorry for my mistakes writing...
@priscillatache61846 жыл бұрын
I don't think the commander would be in charge and aware of this. Too complicated speculation to me. They are probably under command of an officer that have sight of them anyway. I would go for creating chaos and relieving tension like in martial arts like someone said. By yelling an untrained ennemy will have a tendency to look at them (very unlikely they can stop or avoid an swarm of arrow anyway) and it could force them to look away a close combat they are in. Only a second is enough to give the advantage to your allie in close combat.
@priscillatache61846 жыл бұрын
Or maybe it's to inform the allie in close combat not to make a sudden move and take the arrow.

During the Sengoku period, where samurai were constantly at war throughout Japan, and soldiers were always facing death, they had a special meaning to life. Their reason for fighting was not just to kill the enemy, but to be loyal, brave, and fair to live beautifully as a soldier(bushi). The shouting which remains in Japanese martial arts is an expression of bravery and intimidation and pride of being Bushi.

@@cloudiwolker8134 Well, I imagine you gasp after screaming so you take in more air, increase your blood flow and thus are able to keep more focus/have more energy. Try screaming for a bit. Almost all cultures used screaming during battles as a way of detergent.

It's interesting how little things in the tactical realm have changed. This is essentially fire and maneuver, advancing on a line with suppressive fire. But it's with bows and arrows. That's kind of surreal, if you think about it: the things modern infantry train to do with semi-automatic rifles is basically the same thing infantry have done for hundreds of years.
@vtrmcs6 жыл бұрын
You're not wrong. It happened in ancient Japan, happened at Rourkes Drift (Zulu) and every battle before or since. It's a glitch, that particular issue cropped up in version 1.18 when they introduced the controversial floppy hat physics model. Some attribute it to the AI trying to follow the hat when it wobbles but it's been impossible to replicate in testing. They patched it by setting power to zero now every time the models turn by 30 degrees, it happens to stop the AI from shooting each other. They seem to reset after one full revolution. It's getting fixed anyway when they rip out all the old models and replace them with the new schoolgirl anime update textures in a few months.

Bows were more rapid fire and easier to produce than muskets, however they were not as powerful and required more skill to use. Archers were used to supplement and support match lock gunners, also archers were able to fire into places that muskets couldn’t reach, such as over castle walls due to the much higher arch of fire of a bow.

The reason they are screaming is for morale, honor and conformation. There scream is known as kiai, it gives a rush of adrenaline that increases their heart rate and breathing and makes them feel strong, it is also used to intimidate the enemy. They scream to let the enemy know that they have fired an arrow, as they believed that firing an arrow at an enemy without them knowing was a dishonorable kill. They also scream to let allies know that they ment to fire that arrow, it's so they know that they hit their target by using skill and that the arrow didn't slip from there fingers and hit the target through blind luck.
@redpandemic10814 жыл бұрын
I learned about the kiai during my Kendo training. There it made perfect sense to me since a warrior is meant to be just as much of a still lake in a fullmoon night as a fierce predator that can and will strike down it's prey by all means. And in one on one the kiai can easily distract you if you're not cautious. Yet for archers... not to doubt you, it just makes less sense to me. The thing with the honour... that makes perfect sense for the japanese samurai culture. Never ambush your opponent. Never strike down an opponent that has surrendered or is without a weapon. To fight with honour will gain you honour. To fight with trickery will make you and your family fall into shame. While most warriors claim to fight with honour, I think the Japanese totally overdid it. Even the archers... this is some serious dedication.
