Koskenkorva Salmiakki - the final review from the Hotel Indigo on Bulevardi on our first night in Helsinki, Finland! The flavor is listed as "salty liquorice" and the drink is from "a village" - this libation comes in at 32% ABV!
This drink is Koskenkorva Viina (basically Finnish vodka) mixed with Turkish Pepper and salty licorice - this has a similar flavor of Jagermeister mixed with Greek Ouzo, but very salty! This concoction was quite popular in Finland in the 1990s, though today remains a common sight across the country.
Anyway, enjoy the video - cheers!

It's from a village called Koskenkorva

It has totally different taste when ice cold. Jäger is actually good comparison, room temp jäger vs. ice cold jäger. Same difference between salmiakkikossu cold and room temp.

Love that "a village" on the label. In case you don't get where the joke comes: Koskenkorva is a small town in Finland. Regular Koskenkorva was made there at first.

That salty part isn't "table salt". More accurate discripsion should be " smoke bomb ingridient". Or maybe it should be called it's actual name "ammonium chloride"

Ammonium chloride, aka sal ammoniac, thus "salmiak". But I've had many salmiakki that also contains table salt, so you get a bit of both. I'm making a batch of salmiak vodka with Sallos Salmiak Pastillen, which has both table salt and sal ammoniac.

Last time I was in Finland (my mum is Finnish) I tried Salmiakki liquer & it is quite nice. The next on my list is Teerenpeli single malt Finnish Whisky. But as with so many things in Finland, good stuff comes at a cost. But that said, the Finns make bloody good stuff. Lovely country.

I'm making a pint of homemade Salmiakki Koskenkorva right now! Cheap American vodka + Sallos Salmiak Pastillen FTW. I'm glad you gave it an honest review... I'm a huge fan of anise/licorice-flavored spirits and such and this is one of my faves. Can kill some Ouzo and Sambuca, myself! Salmiak is very much an acquired taste -- it's not just salt -- it also has salt of ammonia (sal ammoniac -- salmiak), which a lotta folks find REALLY offputting.

Just to mention... Ouzo, Raki and stuff, those are aniseed flavor, not licorice, though the flavors are similar to a point... However salty licorice, with Ammonium Chloride, is quite different beast =)

My mouth literally started watering. Koskenkorva Salmiakki is delicious. Oh, and "the village" is kind of a joke, becauseKoskenkorva is actually name of the village..

I'm not an expert but i'd describe the taste something close to cough medicine. I like salmiakki, have bought a bottle and would buy again if i was into spending money in alcohol. I just rather make my own wine. From dandelions lately...

You could make that argument for any liquor. It just depends on what you like. If you want to chug blue curaçao out of the bottle, that's your choice, too.

You can not really mix salmiakki koskenkorva with anything so better to drink it as it is.

You see, that "Raki" liquor is not actually Turkish, it's Arabian, and they learnt that from Greek most likely. It could be labelled as Ottoman perhaps, but not Turkish though (Ottoman's aren't Turkish, so...), it came in to the Turkish language back in Ottoman's reign. But if you are referring to the brand as Turkish Raki, we hear that here a lot but I don't understand how do people drink that.. smells like old people's medicine. Very old ones.
