Heck, you really can't even say XIII was a good video game, just not a good FF without being torn apart by people who for some stupid reason think FFX is good and VII is great. They all tend to be young and ignorant of IV, V and VI and do not like IX which is hilarious. Granted, XIII has some bizarre design choices. It is still better than X.

as a FF game it sucked IMHO, maybe as a game on its own it would have a better time. Time has passed and this game has been forgotten pretty much, and while FFXV has a bunch of weak points they at least made something better (but the battle system), but I can see many people enjoying it, it didn't ENTIRELY suck, the turn battle system kinda clicked and had a lot of unused potential, and tbh I think it's better than the FFXV's one-button battle system, but on everything else it is kinda annoying and characters are very forgettable and sometimes annoying and shallow, btw got here thanks to youtube and since Tim was on the video ...

@@IMRavnos but FFVII is great, FFVI deserves more attention tho, it's a masterpiece, I find the FFVII hate from old FF game fans a little biased, being myself one of those fans as well but enjoying all of FF games from the NES up to IX so much, then enjoyed XII a little (They grabbed the wrong main char tho), then liked XV a bit (so much lost potential it hurts ...), X and XIII just made me think that FF is not FF anymore (X had its bits of good moments but still..), Vanille IMHO is the most annoying character in the whole FF franchise and maybe at the top list of the whole videogame history. As for FF XIII, it feels too linear and repetitive, when FF games should feel like more things are going on, it was sad to see that small open-world so close to the end, there's so much this game could've attempted, and the small Chocobo minigame made me nod in sadness.

I have always liked this game quite a bit. You're right about the art, love the music so much too. They limit the player interaction with the game so much until the 3rd disc and I think that has a lot to do with it reviewing so poorly. Kinda like blue dragon but way more severe haha.

This is my second favorite RPG of all-time. It's phenomenal. The OST (my favorite OST in games), the cutscenes, the characters (especially Sazh), the world, the graphics, the combat, the upgrade system, Gran Pulse. It's all so damn good. Glad to see more videos on it, especially from Tim. Edit: Oooh, nice to hear some Lightning Returns love, too. That game, while not quite as great as this one imo, is also really really fun.

Nice to see this game again - i loved the style, art and characters of it, but lost patience with it's super slow start, and got stuck on some space pope that turns into a robot sphinx on an airship. I was unable to go back and grind to level up too. Never got to the open world green grass bit :-/

Yea it really was a great final fantasy. Sure it wasn't the greatest and it was very linear. But the gameplay was unique and challenging near the end. My biggest con was the summons that were pretty much useless. The switching roles thing was a lot of fun and the music and story were also very good.

So, as a non-Japanese speaker, the Japanese voices sound way better to me than the English ones. I've only played a few hours of the game, though. But I'm wondering: Are the Japanese voices actually low-quality in a way that an actual Japanese speaker (such as yourself, Tim) would notice and that other people wouldn't? Because the English voice-work feels vastly inferior to what I hear coming out of Rockstar and Naughty Dog. But that Japanese voice-work sounds like it could potentially be at the level of those other two developers... but am I missing something, since I don't know what I'm hearing (and am using English subtitles)?

Man, this brings me back - I remember your initial impressions of this while I was waiting on the Western release, and I was SO DAMN INVESTED in this. I remember this intro feeling somehow both epic and boring, and looking back on it, yeah, the battle system is great but takes so long to get good. Great video dude. Hot memories.

This weirdly bugged me as someone who only played the Japanese version of this game and I'm a horrible person who always has to correct people (despite it not mattering at all) 1. It was Paradigm Shift in English and Optima Change in Japanese, so the other way around. (one thing where the EN version is actually cooler) 2. How dare you insult Kaji Yuki. Hope is only good because of him. 3. It was "L'cie, Fal'cie and Shigai (gai the kanji for husk)" Which is still horrible. 4. Vanille's Japanese VA was an (obnoxious) okinawan accent There's probably more but I just realised I kinda want to play this game again. I platinumed it despite not reaaaally liking it, the story was weird. Still, Switch version when. Squenix, make my Switch contain all FF games thanks.

Oh HECK, I was addressed in this stream twice, by name... I don't know if that means anything to Tim that he keeps calling on me. Okay three things; firstly, Fang is the best character in this game, and that's saying a lot based on both her design and personality in a game loaded with exceptional character designs. Not gonna lie, she's crazy hot, and her double sided spear/longstaff/sansetsukon is one of the best weapons imagined for fiction. Secondly, this game is all style but oh lord the writing and gameplay are big problem zones. I genuinely wanted to love it but oof. AND THIRDLY, do you just hate guys with bandannas over their heads? Like between Snow and the hero of Dragon Quest VIII is it just a fashion item you think is trash? Do you ALSO hate the design of the hero of Suikoden??? These are the things that keep me up at night.
