You remember how in cyberpunk literature/TTRPGs there was the concept of people essentially pledging their lives and loyalties to the giant megacorps? Defending them to the death against any and all who would challenge or question their corporate patron. I reckon at this rate people will be living in Nintendo arcologies to escape the wasteland within a decade or so.

It seemed like such a silly idea when I was young. Made sense for a TTRPG as you needed bad guys to fight. "But come on, nobody is that stupid right? The Megacorp has to have some kind of mind-control device, right?" Ahhh, I remember being young. Where the question, "They can't be that stupid, right?" keeps being answered over and over in the worst ways possible.

Well, at least they didn't send the Pinkertons to Kotaku's offices for not being held to an embargo that doesn't exist. Like Hasbro/Wizards of the Coast did when they accidentally sent a product to a customer and then sent the Pinkertons to them when they made a KZbin opening video because they broke an embargo they didn't participate in.

Why we need independent journalism, really.
@Sapheiorus
@Sapheiorus Жыл бұрын
@@vincentmuyo The problem is that all these outlets start out “independent”, but then they receive considerable perks (followed thereafter by implicit threats to lose those perks) for particular coverage of exclusive information. This leads to the rhetorical favors those outlets return so they can continue having an edge over competitior outlets. This ensures they stay relevant and continue profiting. This “dependence” compared to the initial “independence” guarantees material gain for the journal enterprise owners, so obviously it ends up being the optimal and “right” thing to do when it comes to managing the journalist outlet. It’s not a matter of “independence”. Such independence in this economic arrangement will inevitably mean NOTHING with respect to this issue. We would need a structure that DOES NOT reward collusions of this sort and instead outlaws and punishes them.

When political journalists work as a mouthpiece of the government they are "bought off" and "corrupt", but somehow it's the job of games journalism to dance to the publishers' tune? Something is wrong here, and it's not on Kotaku's end.

And the controversy generates more buzz around its release. Publishers may take action to prevent leaks, but fr it's par of the dance, and Nintendo can declare how upset this makes them, but ultimately they're going to profit off this. Hell, game marketers might consider leaking to Kotaku under the table to get the same treatment.

This 'embargo' b.s. came up recently with Wizards of the Coast and their "Magic The Gathering" cards when one small KZbinr got ahold of their not-yet-released set early because they were accidentally sent to him by a game store (I think). He was thrilled and opened them on video, of course. Not many days later WotC sent the Pinkertons (yeah, those ones) to his door who threatened him with a massive fine and jail time, insisted the cards were stolen, demanded the cards and for the YTer to take down the videos that showed the cards. (the YTer complied after all the threats) WotC's excuse for sending armed security was the cards were embargoed. Fine, but, that YTer wasn't under embargo, and the cards weren't stolen. The YTer did nothing wrong. (I don't play MTG or D&D but Hasbro/WotC is such a train wreck that I've been keeping up on events waiting to see what unbelievably *stupid* thing they do next).

It matters not if the items were shipped too early, you received 100 RAM units instead of the 1 you ordered, or even if the package was meant for somebody else. By law, the sender cannot force you to send the items back if the package has your name on it. It is within their right to request, but they cannot force you to do anything. ;) I probably should have explained the YTer ordered a set that is already out, so the package was addressed to him. But they sent him a different set. The YTer *does* play MTG so immediately knew the cards were unreleased, but since he's a content creator and juicy content fell into his lap...of course he used it.

In fact they'd probably have their whole lives torn apart while cops searched for a way they were more connected to the crime. It's funny. When games journalism remains superficial and mere shills for the publishers, they're accused of disregarding the basic tenets of journalism. But when they then do actual journalism, like exposing and drawing attention to exploitative working conditions, or uncovering any plans the industry may have, the Gamer boys want them to shut up and not "ruin" their enjoyment. It's like the art debate. It was a little bit more than that. With Nintendos last big release, Metroid Dread, Kotaku openly advocated and showed a step by step guide on how to download copies illegally through emulation. Showing people how to steal a day one release basically. Nintendo then blacklisted them. So when Tears of the Kingdom comes round and Nintendo don't give Kotaku a copy they get butthurt and start acting like they were blacklisted for some really hard hitting and deep investigative reporting on the industry. Like the gaming version of Watergate or some shit. They then double down and start posting memes involving killing Japanese soldiers during WW2. Then they decide to go full petty child and say "if you're not giving me what I think I'm entitled too, then I'm going to try to not only inform people that leaks are out there so watch out, but I'm going to actively publish each and every one in a long list" They think they should be entitled to good treatment, even when they actively go out of their way to do things to hurt the company they want good treatment from. It's a hypocrisy issue basically. Now usually I'm with Sterling on their stances but I do think they're wrong here. Spinning this as Kotaku doing "actual Journalism" is disingenuous at best and downright dishonest at worst. The weren't showing mismanagement, bad treatment of employees, sexual harrasment or anything else. This wasn't hard hitting expose type material that showed the company doing illegal, immoral, or anticonsumer practics, it was a petty "if you don't give me the ball, I'm going to call you bad names" type situation. Plus the fact that Kotaku have, for a long time, been a gaming site secondary and a political site first and have a habit of causing unnecessary problems for a ton of Devs to push an agenda (you simply need to look at Hogwarts Legacy to see that, entire review is about how you're committing genocide if you play a game) when many people think they should maybe, as a gaming site, be focusing on gaming first and politics second (if at all).

They're playing the game, they know the rules, I've no idea why they're acting salty about the fact that posting articles undermining a corporation has resulted in that corporation cutting off their access. Right before they wrote this article they were crying about Nintendo not giving them a copy of Tears of the Kingdom and calling them "unprofessional & coercive" before proving themselves to be unprofessional & petty. You can say what you want about them reporting on leaks but like you said, a lot of the games are getting leaked and they've never written up an article about them before. This isn't some bastion of journalistic integrity, just some spiteful man striking out at Nintendo because he felt entitled to a copy of Tears of the Kingdom & didn't get it.

Ok but like, there’s no story spoilers in the article, It’s literally just stuff we could guess at from the trailers. And they put a spoiler warning at the start of the article. How do people think Kotaku were in wrong here? This is such a non-controversy it’s insane

People who are against news outlets reporting leaks are nuts. Like the point of any press is to not be on the side of the industry (or government) that they report on, but on the side of the public so they can learn new that they would normally be denied. I don't want Zelda Tears of the Kingdom spoiled but I've had 0 issues with encountering spoilers (I didn't even know about the leak until several days after it was announced). When the Street Fighter 6 leaks happened, I jumped right onto them because I wanted to know right away which characters were going to be in the game. It did not ruin my hype at all. Hell, I got to experience a complete 180 with Marisa where at first she didn't look interesting but now I'm completely hyped for her more than any other fighter. Take some personal responsibility and stop licking boots people. The press is a tool for YOU, the PUBLIC, not the establishment. Learn to appreciate that idea before its gone entirely.

The irony is that in this particular case Kotaku has more journalistic integrity than every other outlet that DIDN'T report on the leaks. Here, they are the professionals. Meanwhile, they didn't spoil anyone because the headline makes it very clear what the contents of the article is. So people can just steer clear if they wish to. That's one big issue with people criticizing journalism. They often don't get it. There are plenty of reasons to criticize Kotaku or any number of outlets and journalists. But this is not one of them.

Weren't we all like mad that embargos have been chafing up against release dates for the last few years, making reviews effectively a post-launch experience, rather than a forewarning to purchasers? Wasn't that like, a thing people were generally annoyed by? I just don't get it.

Kotaku existing outside of embargo and actually USING that status seems like it has the potential to tip power out of the hands of publishers and into the hands of games journalists. If other journalists notice kotaku and other blacklisted organizations are doing just fine or better without obedience, maybe others will pull from these subservient contracts and force publishers to renegotiate their rules and restrictions. I mean, it's unlikely, given that I'm sure game copies aren't the only thing larger organizations stand to lose-- any chance of interviews with developers is definitely on the line too-- but it would be interesting to see if that kind of shift COULD happen. It would definitely improve both industries.

Hate to say it but this isn't an entirely true statement. I mean yes, you can ignore most spoilers if you don't outright search for them. But depending on what you look at, it might be IMPOSSIBLE to outright avoid EVERYTHING unless you literally blindfold yourself or never turn on a device ever. It's like say "To avoid any brand, just don't look at them" You can try but you can't avoid everything.

To be fair.... sometimes Kotaku will put spoilers right in the headline of an article - they did it recently in an article about the latest Horizon DLC. The headline just straight up spoiled the ending. But this Zelda article isn't one of those time.

@@ShyRanger What? And even if one truly doom scroll and get caught into someone intentionally trying to spoil something? Like the best example being people driving around in real world spoiling a death of someone pointless in a Harry Potter book that was about to be released. It was a few years ago now. So? What a big deal. As if it truly * matter. It is rare a spoiler is sooo crucial or that it truly is even worth to claim it as truly something you lost out on. Today in entertainment you need so much research before committing to anything. There is so much * out there and way to much * 'reviews'. $100 asking price means nothing and the fanshittery is able to muddy the waters WAY to much. Anyone actually so screwed up in there mind and committed to not spoiling ANYTHING about some Nintendon't game? That is just one more reason on a long list why you should not buy anything connected to this insanity. So much 'spoiler' posts you can truly avoid. And any true spoiler is usually found in media that is way to good for the mainstream * to even care to anger people with. Even the Harry Potter death in that stupid book is not just funny. It also is deserved. I'm sure so many people afraid of 'spoilers' for some stupid video game defend said stupid video game for the shit going on in the businesses. The crunch and abuse etc. And really that says something when spoilers are going to hurt them more then the people making said stuff is hurting.

There's a ton you can give Kotaku shit for. This is not one of those things. They were not only well within their rights, they even titled the article to make people aware there would be spoilers inside so they could avoid it if they wanted to. All Kotaku did this time was literally their job. They reported the news about video games.

I remember the uproar over Kotaku reporting on Metroid Dread running on emulators before it launched. People claimed that Dread needed to sell well for Metroid to continue, and that Kotaku was endangering that. Not only is it not Kotaku's job to protect Metroid's sales; Dread sold just fine anyway. More than fine, even, last i checked, Dread was closing in on 3 million copies, and is already the best selling installment in the series.

As a Metroid fan, I totally get why people were concerned about sales. It’s a series that Nintendo will let sit fallow for years on end because they don’t give enough attention to caring for their stable of franchises outside of Mario and Zelda. But I’m not an idiot. Leaks and emulation are free advertising. People who care enough to go through the trouble to emulate and appreciate games (including preserving and distributing old out-of-print titles) are the ones who actually spend money on games. They’re the first ones to get excited. They’re *fans*.

6:43 "Kotaku embarrasses themselves over Tears of the Kingdom". What? Whoever wrote that has embarrassed themself way more than Kotaku did for [checks notes] doing video games journalism. On a site dedicated to video games journalism. The entire thing is frustrating because so many people want to go to bat for the video game industry, largely filled with massive and highly profitable corportations, against journalism, an industry which is in significant decline and by and large has become an extension of corporate PR departments because it's cheaper. Also, absolutely wild that Tears of the Kingdom revealed that all of the characters were trans. Very bold move.

I think it happens to some degree for most games, but the worst fandoms in particular that I've noticed are the Zelda and Fromsoft fans. God forbid you don't think every game from their respective franchise is 11/10 perfect or that you don't play the game the "right" way", because otherwise they'll act like you personally killed their mother and pissed on the ashes.
