EXACT "FUCKING" LY. The problem today in America is that people aren't proactive in ANYTHING. Especially finances. I personally have a very good job. ( over 70K ) per year and I WATCH EVERY FUCKING PENNY I spend and always ask. DO I NEED THIS SHIT? I put a couple of hundreds in savings ( investmensts ), a month and always think. WHAT HAPPENS IF I LOSE MY JOB OR SHIT HAPPENS. And that is the problem. While they have their job, they don't think "WHAT IF". And that's the key. Always be proactive and think ahead. But try to explain this to the average moron out there.

I would get one for the money youget back, but I'm debating if i want to get one because then ill get a credit score and i dont want one because if im going to get a credit card its to game the bank and thus my credit score wont look nice because I'll pay off everything before they put interest on it. I'll probably pay it off within hours of using it. And apparently that makes your score lower and I will be renting and theyll see the score isn't good and they wont automatically under write how good I would be as a tenant.

This was 10 years ago. I remember so clearly picking up a newspaper in Edinburgh airport the morning the news broke about the Lehman Brothers crash and thinking 'We are about to live through interesting times'. The year before that Tony Blair's Labour Government in the UK were busy selling our gold reserves at bargain price and spending like drunken sailors to 'boost' the economy - basically inflating a bubble to the background tune of 'Things can only better'. How wrong they were. While some of us saw disaster looming many people had taken out a bunch of credit during those times based on their well paying jobs, then lost those jobs thanks to outsourcing and the ripple effects of banking insanity. Jobs that became available paid less and they were squeezed. I hadn't always spent wisely and had no savings, however I got a good redundancy payment when it was my turn to lose my job, I wasn't in debt other than my mortgage and have very employable skills. I had also set my life up with the plan that I could live ok on 2/3 of my earnings if I cut out the 'wants'. To me, nothing was hard about this and it was an obvious strategy, so when disaster hit I was well placed to ride it out. These days I don't even want half the things I already have and don't give a toss about what anyone else has. Life is much easier like this. No-one really cares what you have except you. Your image only matters to you, so wise up and think about why you care about all this crap. It's a tragedy that 10 years on it seems we've learned nothing, it's as if society has sleepwalked into believing debt is a fact of life. *Your* debt only makes $m dollar bonuses for the corporate psychopaths in the banks and corporations that caused all the problems in the first place. It really doesn't have to be this way.

I learned valuable lessons in my early 20s when I let a man manipulate me into going into debt and disappeared. Was I young and dumb and didn't know. Not anymore. I'm older, wiser with a FICO of 800+, no debt, 2 credit cards paid completely every month. I learned the difference between a want and need Feels good.

I am a radical. It is 2019 and my monthly expenses are $1,550 including rent. I live in a major West Coast city in what is called a "microstudio". I make $1400 a month working part time in a museum and writing an occasional article for the paper. I used to be corporate and paid cash for my car before I left that life, where I was literally earning 7 times more money...the point being that I do have a car that is a year and a half old and only has 5000 miles on it as I lived in the middle of Portland and can take light rail or walk everywhere. I expect the car to last me 30 years since I only use it for trips or to go visit friends on the other side of town, or help with the occasional move. The apartment I live in is 150 square feet and I sleep on a single bed, but the building is new and attractive with a view of the West Hills. Street parking permits are $180 a year, less if you make under $40k. My health insurance is paid by the state...I have dental and mental health included (should I ever need it!) . I have a little bit of money in savings and am currently subsidizing the shortfall ($150-200 a month) out of that, which will last me 8.3 years at the current burn rate. I will qualify for a fairly healthy social security when I am 65 because of my corporate years but crucially I am not sitting on a chunk of money from that era. I'm 45, have no children, no serious relationships and no pets. I realized quite a while ago that this is basically a European lifestyle that I learned in my country of birth (South Africa) to my American parent. The problem is that Americans spend too much and are heavily conditioned to keep up with the Joneses. This is an American problem and I believe it has a great deal to do with the idea that the American Dream is still attainable. It really isn't. Better to live with low, low, low overheads and to raise young people to think in terms of frugality and not necessarily having three children, two cars, a large mortgage etc. but rather thinking about the possibilities and freedoms associated with avoiding instant gratification. I am comfortable and happy and will never go back to the grind.

Live within our means, 12 year old car, 0 credit card, paid off our house. The only thing wife and I are maxing out are our retirement contributions. What a feeling. Who gives u crap about the joneses.

As George Carlin rightly said: America's best hobbies: shopping and eating! "Huge piles of redundant protoplasm lumbering through the malls massive bellies monstrous thighs big fat fucking arses"... disgusting yukkk

Absolutely agreed upon that comparing yourself with others is the thief of joy, it's Billy tools what you have and makes you ungrateful for what you're creator and Lord has given you.
