Crazy hearing Bob Odenkrik not be sure if Better Call Saul will become a thing or not. Not knowing that Breaking Bad will end, and Better Call Saul will begin, and both will be two of the best TV shows to ever be made.

Bob makes such a good point about how writers don't get nearly enough credit for the painstaking process of creating and writing dialog for the characters they create. He wasn't talking about himself, but the Saul character on Breaking Bad, and how he feels bad taking credit for the character as an actor.

While it seems an inescapable running gag of the Hollywood machine that the writer will never get appropriate credit, even back in the time of 2012 when he said this, I think it speaks more to Bob's genuine high level of humility and aversion to direct compliments. He without question deserves a significant amount of credit for the end result, bad acting can still fuck up good writing. This is certainly more so the case with TV than film, but since a series is the example being dealt with, over the last decade plenty of showrunners/writers (especially of more serialized-heavy shows) have become a sort of celebrity themselves way more than the time before. Very much including Vince Gilligan himself. He even wound up having a very funny acting gig in a "Community" episode inbetween BB and BCS. As the internet spread wider dedicated fans knew the name and face of a show creator as much as its leads. TV has for a long time now been where the writer is basically considered the one "in power", whereas in features it's the director. It's very logical, since a series by design needs loads of different directors over its life. Too many directors asserting full control on their episodes will have a show be all over the place. I totally hear what Bob was saying, but even back at that moment things were already heading a much better direction.

@Lawrence Gillespie Yes, absolutely, and beyond even dialogue, writers write EVERYTHING that happens on tv and in movies, and certainly deserve appreciation for it.

1:25:15 I think a huge element to what Odenkirk is alluding to here is just a natural extension of the whole entertainment business. It's both widened and become far more niche-oriented over the last decade+. There's such a broader array of places where performers can do their thing and break out in various ways that it gets more accurately refined in a more fitting context. Not unlike how in the early 80's to early 90's if you were a comic who had a fantastic first appearance with Johnny Carson, you were a major star almost literally overnight with a TV show in development, but that one-way street is arcane. Plus there's no shortage of examples now where an SNL sketch killed in its 4 minutes of screen time so was so quickly turned into a feature length movie to then realize there's a reason it worked in a 4 minute dose.

Of course, the writing works both ways. Breaking Bad should have ended at the end of the magnificent Season 4, after Skyler asks Walter: “What does this mean.” And WW, responds: “I won!” Similarly, the final season on of BB was horrendous-simply awful. Similarly, the reboot of Dexter, the recently completely Billions, which should have ended with Season 5’s finale and instead gave us two more miserable seasons. Boardwalk Empire, had a lousy final season. The Wire had one bad season and an OK final season. Only The Sopranos maintained absolute excellence for 7 Seasons. So, that’s the writers, too‼️

Riiiiiight... Pollak wound up during like 400 of these things with scores of well known and talented entertainers (plenty with repeat appearances) over the course of a decade because he was awful at it. was this the only one you ever looked at? I mean yeah by law of averages some won't be fantastic, but it endured for a reason. I've never understood why he's never seemed to get much recognition for being, definitely not first, but ONE of the earlier people doing what's a podcast.
