Okay so let's clarify everything about the nct subunits please read it so you wont get confused : Nct were supposed to have a concept which is unlimited members until last year , Nct in total is 26 members , these memebers are divided into subunits and they are all under the group nct : Nct127 : 9 members ( they were 10 bfr winwin left this subunit and joined wayv , at firdt they debuted as 7 members, and then 2 memebrs joined , n then last member jungwoo joined )so thats wut the number refers to aslo it refers to the longitude coordinate of the city seoul Nct dream: 7 memebrs, it used to have graduation system , it was formed of underage members , when a member graduate he leaves the group and focus on his activities or join another group , n that happened to mark at first when he was too old for the group so he was getting ready to graduate he even had a song to say goodbye to members but since fans were really sad the company decided to make nct dream a fixed group and keep all the members including mark) Wayv : 6 members ( 7 before lucas left) is the chinese subunit, most members r chinese ( not all of them ) they promote in china most of the time Nct wish : they were formed recently and they are the japanese subunit who promote in japan Nct DJJ ( DOOJAEJONG) :formed of 3 memebers of nct127 ( DOO:DOOYOING , JAE: JAEHYUN, JONG: JONGWOO) Nct U : is not a fixed subunit so for every comeback the producers or company choose which members of all NCT will fit this album or this song and its genre and they choose them to participate so it changes every time If u see like NCT2018 , NCT2020, NCT2021.... Every year all members of nct drop a single with an mv where they all participate in the song , since new members kept joining each year ( or even leave like the cas eof sungchan and shotaro who joined riize , and lucas who was part of wayv and became a soloist)

NCT has 26 members units : NCT 127 NCT Dream WayV (it has different name bcs it's Chinese subunit and bcs of some political things between SK and China) NCT Wish (It's new subunit, which is like the end of nct's concept story) NCT DJJ (it's just a trio from nct 127) NCT U (there is can be mix of different members from all those subunits depend on the song) NCT had a limitless concept, which means there is could be much more members than now and there would be units from the whole world. That's why they did graduation system for NCT DREAM bcs this unit was like for the youngest members, so basically they had to graduate once they turned 20. But then they got rid of that concept and NCT WISH became the final unit and now there won't be any new units or members.

The best way to explain NCT is like an umberella business e.g you have Nike as a brand but then theres so many nike stores, decorated differently but all sell the same thing NCT works like this NCT is the brand consisting of all 26 members and each unit -NCT 127 -NCT dream -NCT U -NCT wish -WAYV is a different "store" they make different music, some different members, but ultimately there all one big group 127, dream, wish. wayv, are kinda staight forward 127- is experimental- wilder beats DREAM- originally was the teenagers ranging from members 14-16, was supposed to graduate to another unit when they became an adult (no one liked it so it was scrapped and SM treat us like clowns !) wish- Japanese unit- newest and last unit to debut wayv- Chinese unit- some freaky ass songs However U, is NCT united so different members from different units can come together "unite" and do a song which best fits them, so these comebacks arent often as members can change everytime. as someone who got into seventeen and thought it was hard the first few months learning names and faces, NCT was like a kick in the balls, but it is doable and worth it specifically i find this way to work when ive explained it to family/friends, so hope it helps :)
