Robert - Barron incredible coverage! Good job you all! It is rare to be able to actually see what reporters experience while covering these storms because the power is out. Have a feeling you're getting picked up Nationally guys! I am in FL - but - when like this you have no power - hearing it is really scary - and more so when you can't see anything . Close your eyes, guys turn up your volume a bit - the difference with light and darkness - totally different experience. I did go out ( lasted about 3 minutes!) in Irma and decided this was NOT a good idea! Again great coverage- thanx!

Another transformer blowing... No, those aren't transformers blowing up. The flashes are caused by arcing power lines. Either debris or a tree limb hits primary overhead feeders (7.5, 13.2, 34kV etc.) and you have a HUGE flash green/blue in color. Sometimes in these cases with extreme winds the conductors can gallop or a supporting structure fails causing a phase to ground or phase to phase fault. Those will make a really nice boom/flash that can be seen for miles at night. An overcurrent relay/recloser/fuse comes into play and the lights go out. A recloser will re connect (or reclose hence the name) and the power comes back on. If the fault is present, there will be another flash and the lights go out again. This typically happens three times and the third time the recloser trips and stays open until lineman can clear the fault/repair damage and restore power. If a transformer blew up, the lights would go off and stay off. Transformers can and do blow, but not very often due to safeguards as an exploding transformer around residential areas is not exactly safe. ;) Listen at 05:30 headphones or decent speakers that can reproduce 60Hz accurately. Definitely a fault on primary captured by mic!

I am in SW Florida, where Charlie, Wilma and Irma ran through our area. The power company turns off the entire region before the worst of the storm arrive. Then they slowly and systematically turn it back on zone by zone as they check everything before allowing it to go hot. At this storm level in the video, we would never have live power on.

My mothers bother was one of the first Television News weathermen in the history of the world in Syracuse New York from the 50's through the 70's. His name was Willard, and I think it's deplorable what you people do to get a hurricane story. You are sending the wrong message to young people and young adults alike that it's ok to stand outside in the 100 to 130 mph winds of a hurricane and that's just nuts. 100 mph winds can pick up 3000 lb vehicles and toss them around like mattresses and a human has no chance in those kinds of winds with gusts to exceed 120 mph. I have been through hurricane Wilma in South Florida and I stood outside in the wind for 6 hours under a roadway bridge and there were times that the wind nearly swept me into the air with nothing to hold onto as I watched the railway cars about 1/4 of a mile away blow over and off the tracks and large trees uprooted and blown across the tracks and box trucks tipped over and blown across a parking lot. I got soaked and as the eye approached I had to run out of their as the second wave was much stronger. I was stuck with no way out it hit so fast I couldn't get to safety until the eye wall came over and I got out, soaked, and luckily I wasn't picked up and thrown 2 miles by the wind. You shouldn't do those kinds of "stunts" just for ratings It really is not becoming of a professional and would you want a teenager or anybody to go out in those strong winds and play around, no, so don't do it yourself. Do not try what this clown is doing, I tried it and those kind of winds are not a joke and are very serious and very dangerous, unless your wearing solid rock boots or something or chained to a pole they can pick you up and slam you up against whatever is in the way "at 120 mph" so be warned and don't try it, any where.
