During my undergrad, I was part of a project studying stingless honey bees (Melipona beecheii). One of the beekeepers we were working with in Cienfuegos opened a hive for us and brought out a straw. We drank the honey straight from the hives honey pots. It was such a cool experience!

I am seriously so impressed with this beautiful cinematography! Here in the Las Vegas area I have honey bees that come to my hummingbird feeders (trying to sneak a snack) at the beginning of Fall. If anyone else has this visual treat going on in their backyard, inspect the Bee guards because if missing, those guys will push each other right into the bottle, and drown.

great video! really enjoyed the insights on how hard bees work. though, i can't help but wonder if we give them enough credit for their role in our ecosystem. while some people think of them as just bugs, they actually do so much more than just making honey. it's kinda wild how we often overlook their importance until it’s almost too late, right?

Yay, bees! I've been writing a poem series, "A Bee's Journal," for several years. Learning new things about honeybees inspires new entries in the journal. Now I need to think about some new characters, to include some of the other types. A Bee’s Journal 5 I learn to feed the older hatchlings, just as we were fed. Older workers run to the pantry and back with supplies, savoring the heady flavors of our bee bread spread with nectar. It’s a wonder we aren’t all as fat as queens.

When I was young around 9 years old. There is this bee flew by and accidentally crashed on my face when i tried to turned my head to cross middle of the road. A moment in my life, I met bee closed up. It was so fluffy cute with bright round eyes, wow ... Such breath taking. The bee doesn't sting on me, it just stop and stare, we looking at each other for a moment. The bee also fly closer to me, and is like talking to me, " Hey ! , watch where you going next time, sorry little girl I bumped on you ". I nod my head as a respect, and I flew away. That is the day , I learned to communicate with animal by emotions ❤❤❤

The drones from the solitary bees do they have a *very* short lifecycle like regular honey bees? I'd imagine they come out of their cocoon maybe find a female and then die shortly after? I'd be surprised if they even eat at all once they're adults.
@KQEDDeepLook10 күн бұрын
Hi @huldu This is Gabriela, Deep Look supervising producer. I produced this episode of Deep Look. I don't know exactly what the lifecycle is for male bindweed bees or alfalfa leafcutting bees or blue orchard bees, which are the solitary bees we included in this video. But the males of another solitary bee that I have reported on, called Anthophora bomboides, are indeed short-lived. We talk about this in the video I made about them. They're very interesting bees that make their nests at the beach: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5ewdI2PoKxojtEsi=Wx9-NQjLUsoce56P Enjoy!

22:57 Actually, this is a common misconception. Honeybees are not "struggling," in fact the opposite. Western honeybees are thriving in many spaces, often outcompeting the native pollinators, making them invasive. But they aren't considered invasive because they are considered livestock. The only problem is, they are also living in the wild, where they take food and living space from native pollinators, as well as spreading diseases to bees that would otherwise not get them. They can even help contribute to the spread of invasive plant species, because most native bees (at least in the US) are specialists, meaning they only visit a few types of plants, whereas honeybees are generalists, meaning they can visit many types of plants. In addition, because they are so beloved, Western honeybees take attention away from native bees and other pollinators that are actually struggling. Many people who say "save the bees" only mean honeybees, which do not need saving. Yes, there are some issues that Western honeybees do face-- colony collapse disorder, Varroa destructor mites, and others, but overall honeybee populations are thriving at the expense of some native animals. Sorry for this long rant, I just wanted to clear up this misconception!
