Not all roaches are filthy. The Madagascar hissing cockroach actually makes a pretty sweet pet, thanks to the hungry mites that serve as its cleaning crew.

DEEP LOOK is a ultra-HD (4K) short video series created by KQED San Francisco and presented by PBS Digital Studios. See the unseen at the very edge of our visible world. Explore big scientific mysteries by going incredibly small.
---
As the weather starts to warm and cold days give way to balmier, sunny days, one rite of spring returns every year, just like spring flowers: cockroaches.
Most people run to buy a can of bug spray or to call the exterminator when they see the scurrying little insects in their kitchens or outside their homes.
But not all roaches are pests. Some are pets - like the Madagascar hissing cockroach.
They can be bought at pet stores or online for $5 or less. They don’t bite and don’t carry diseases. They are also much larger than the run-of-the-mill roach, with adults averaging about 3 inches long. They live up to five years. They are slow-moving and mellow - kind of like an old tabby cat. But with antennae. And an appetite for fresh vegetables.
---+ Read the entire article on KQED Science:
www.kqed.org/s...
--- Why do the cockroaches hiss?
They’ll hiss when they’re sounding an alarm or startled, trying to attract a mate or protecting their territory from another male.
--- Are the mites harmful to the cockroaches?
No - they actually help prolong the cockroaches’ lives.
--- What happens to the mites if its host cockroach dies?
The mites will mate, give birth to their young and feed on the same cockroach their entire lives - so they’ll usually die within a few days after the cockroach dies, too, and not seek a new home.

I can confirm that these roaches require these mites to thrive. I raise several species, and while one smaller colony managed to lose all of their mites(for whatever reason), the roaches slowed down, their coloration grew very dull and dusty, they became significantly less active, lethargic, and some even died after a few months. I added a population of mites from another colony to them, and they perked back up and were much healthier than before only a month later. Symbiotic relationships are absolutely astounding. I think I may have spotted some of these mites living on my dubia roaches as well? Although, not very often. They may just be loose wanderers.

After taking care of these guys when I was back in school like a year ago, I have learned to love these big docile cuddly creatures, they don't bite or fly, and they will eat decaying fruits and leaves as well as like dog kibble I think, and I'll be honest if I didn't know where they had been I would not have held them but I cleaned out their little enclosure and would hold and pet them even give them names, I was one of the only ones who would give them attention, they were so peaceful that it would just kinda mellow me out so much that I would have to put the fella back before I dozed off, they seemed to get used to being held the more you held them, otherwise they would be way more skittish, anyways I like them. ^^ the dozing off part is like when I took care of them over spring break or if I just had an extra class period that was not being used for anything. Also they have little sharp leggies but hey that's to hold onto stuff. though the first night I had them on my nightstand I did not know the males would be hissing and fighting at like 10 pm lol it isn't very violent but just alittle noisy, I bileave they will also spit on you if they are nervous which I only encountered once.
