Kraftwerk - Autobahn. Kraftwerk Autobahn.

My dad was in British military intelligence during the cold war living and working in Berlin. When this first track first came out he loved it because he was totally fluent in German. I would have been 6 when he bought a copy, 53 years ago. He also really got into JJ Jarre and I was about 10. This has resulted in a studio with 11 analogue/digital synthesisers and keyboards, a piano and 2 antique harmoniums. Music is love & Love is music

I was 12, I was given some pocket money to buy whatever I wanted for a camping holiday in the South of France. I had my first walkman in '81 so I brought this on tape to listen to on the drive down from London. Changed my life, still gives me goosebumps now. Amazing, especially as I had just worked out they were behind my favorite tune of the time. Planet Rock by Africa Bambaataa and the Soul Sonic Force, which lifts/samples heavily from Trans Europe Express.

Autobahn was the first album which reached in the USA number One. The problem was the the Billboard team did not know how to classify this song. There existed no classification. It was then temporary classified as synth. Music stations around the USA got calls and was asked what this kind of music is. Autobahn hit the USA like a Mega Tsunami, specially after some Radio DJs in Detroit played the song every day at 12am.

According to the Billboard Website that's not the easiest to navigate the "single"...not the album, I think...peaked on the Hot 100 at #25 on 3 May 1975 and remained on that chart for 10 weeks. The only other Kraftwerk track on that chart was Trans-europe Express (7 weeks, #67 on 24 June 1978). I'm surprised that Tour de France isn't listed for I surely heard that broadcast Stateside as a single.

When I listened first time this song I imagined to drive along all the german Autobahns with my car. In 2015 I did it. I was in Stuttgart and I drove with my car until Berlin. I drove for 6 hours and I listened by autoradio this song. It was a very nice situation. Admiring the high trees along the Autobahn I felt as I was at the same time of the song creation. Very very nice

U will never understand that feeling, when you never drove on a Autobahn. Sweet memories when we almost drove 2 hours on the Autobahn to visit our relatives, i almost felt asleep everytime. Driving in a mid 70s Mercedes ( C 123, mint green) we own that old days :) If we would still own it today it would be an oldtimer.

i still remember when i got my driving-licence in 1991 and first car (Opel Kadett D from 1979). i've installed a huge music-equipment. driving over the Autobahn or "Landstrasse" by night with friends for hours to visit a Discotheque, during this we're listenin' to this song. the first time i've ever heared the band Kraftwerk was in 1986 with "Musique nonstop" (extended version) and than "Autobahn", i was 13 years old. nice and sweet memories of my youth
