I have loved these guys since buying AUTOBAHN, without having heard a note of it prior, in 1975 (I bought it because I loved the album cover, because they were German, and because I was in the early stages of becoming both an electronic music freak and a fan of European import music). I was fortunate to catch them on their AUTOBAHN tour of America that same year in Lincoln, Nebraska at Pershing Auditorium (with opening band Pavlov's Dog). I still love Kraftwerk today, but am saddened by what their live performances have become--nothing but them standing in front of their laptops. I'm sure this makes performing for them very simple, convenient, and minimally-stressful.....but I miss the days of Ralf & Florian actually playing synthesizers...of Florian playing his flute...and of Karl & Wolfgang playing their electronic drums. I would still go see them in a heartbeat, given a chance, but I miss the old Kraftwerk-as-a-band.

Ralf does have a full 88 key MIDI controller and Henning has a smaller one -- they do actively play once you understand their set-up. The difference is that these concerts were all analog equipment which probably made it better. However, Kraftwerk have publicly said it was horrible touring with all those analog synths in the 70s-early 80s because they'd need constant recalibration or they worried about failed components, etc. everytime they lugged their mobile studio around essentially. This was Ralf's trajectory all along.

This used to be my least favorite track on Radioactivity, but I've grown fonder of it as I've gotten older. This rendition is absolutely beautiful, those last notes at the end made me a little misty-eyed. These robots have feelings! haha
