Featured is the chess game between Vladimir Kramnik and Garry Kasparov from the 2000 Classical World Chess Championship Match. We enter a normal line of the Nimzo-Indian Defense which soon results in an isolated queen pawn position for Kramnik. A tactical shot soon lands on Kasparov’s sensitive e6 square. After the computer-like middlegame of forceful captures, we arrive at an endgame where Kramnik is up an imaginary pawn and structurally worse. Kramnik follows up the final phase dynamically, forcing Kasparov’s resignation after only 25 moves. Vladimir Kramnik’s play throughout was very direct, and it registered a 98% accuracy.

there were simply no grounds for that. being down by 1 point and frustrated after 7 draws in a row, he blundered and got beaten fair and square. he had accused the Deep Blue team of cheating though (only a few years before), despite having no concrete evidence whatsoever.

All the more impressive that Kramnik - who was more of a positional player at that time, he had somewhat evolved later on - beated Kasparov in that manner, Kasparov being particularly famous for his tactics and the sense for dynamic positions.

Very instructive, thanks! I wonder why Kasparov did not see how the pawn was poisened. This is obviously great play by Kramnik but it seems to be well within Kasparov's abilities to see what kind of trouble capturing the pawn with the queen will result in.

this might sound biased but in this match against kramnik, kasparov really was in bad shape, some reasons being PCA was falling apart, was having marriage issues(apparently it was certain he would go for divorce) in one of the games Kasparov drew a game with white in 11 moves while he was a point down, that is just unimaginable and makes no sense And sadly he never quite managed to get another shot at the title, he was too stubborn to play another candidates for a shot at the 2004 world championship(leko vs kramnik, kramnik retained the title after tying the score 7-7 at the end) then he retired while still being world no.1

i know it's a joke, but it's unfair. it wouldn't be so easy back in 2000. chess engines weren't at that level yet. Deep Blue was an exception, but it was a multi-million dolar supercomputer. engines that you could run on a regular machine back in 2000 (like Shredder or Deep Junior) were already of grandmaster strength, but not yet of WC calibre. it had changed by 2006 ("Toiletgate"), but Topalov's team never really offered convincing evidence of cheating. and Kasparov has never even alleged any wrongdoing on Kramnik's part - and he certainly would if there was even a slight reason for that, given how soul-crushing was his unexpected defeat in that match. it's not unusual for someone to "play like Stockfish", especially if the game is short, the opening follows mainstream theory, and the opponent blunders early on. you could find similarly accurate games play long before in WC matches. even Morphy played such games sometimes. what's generally indicative of cheating isn't high accuracy alone, but perfect performance achieved with inhuman consistency (eg. game after game after game).
