The first signs of spring are here. I made a big mistake bringing out black feathers in front of the crows.

oh the feather story....i have befriended a big flock of crows in the fields OVER YEARS, with a lot of trust, funny games, great moments. THAT day when i picked up "one" feather from the ground, hell went loose, they flew their circle of anger around me covered in loud noise. the only thing i could do was to leave, i was sad and also a bit angry. it felt like i had betrayed them big time. it went back to normal after some days or one or two weeks. i wonder if they thought i had murdered a crow or if the feathers just belong to their kingdom and the feathers need to be untouched and are kinda holy. i think its the second one. touching a feather is for them like touching a crow.

I worked for many years in parrot rescue, as well as sharing my home with a jackdaw called Kayak, and have long made a habit of keeping moulted wing and tail feathers (and I urge anyone who keeps birds to do the same). Then, should one of my birds damage an important flight feather, I can use the old, moulted feather to replace the damaged one through the process of imping.

Thank you for sharing these wonderful moments with the crows. That was certainly a distressing reaction to the feather collection, but I'm glad you had enough trust built up with Krari that he and his family came back to you. ❤

they are not easily fooled. Once I brought a dead pigeon to a family of crows. Crows went wild, thinking I am a bird killer. But by midday they forgot about it and their trust in me regained.

Who knows where the time goes. Every year it feels like time is picking up speed, which is logical since every year represents a smaller and smaller portion of my life. Wasn't it only yesterday that we watched them restart their nesting? And here we are ready to go again. It's been at least a week since I heard the first blackbird sing in the middle of the night here, so spring is definitely here in Oslo as well. Judging by these images, I'd say that you guys are well underway. I always look at the birds to understand when spring has come, as they know it better than us. Humans have wildly different perspectives on what spring means since we're not locked in with the pulse of nature in the same way. I have a friend who insists it can't possibly be spring unless he can sit outside in the sun and drink cold beer comfortably. But by that time, the eggs have hatched already, at least here in Norway :p Good luck to Kräri and Kruu this year. EDIT: Oh I forgot to mention that the crows have battled with the jackdaws this year as well. I'm under the impression that unless they gather and make it clear that this territory is taken, the jackdaws will happily take it from them. It's quite the spectacle to see the acrobatics that happen in the sky at dawn when the crows and the jackdaws test each other in big flocks. EDIT2: Wow... the feathers story is something else. I'm not sure that would have occurred to me until I saw the reaction. That is really something.

Times does fly by so quickley! I wait for the cranes to come back every year and then I know spring is her :-) And all birds are already so busy! We do not have jackdaws here where I live but I see the same battles with magpies each year. The crows take their nests apart when they try to build one in their territory ;-).

remember everyone, you are doing this for them, you are not trying to get a pet. dont worry about getting them to eat out of your hand, just help them out with some food over the colder months. go for a walk, have some seeds with you and help them out.

That heap of feathers must have looked to the crows like the remnants typical of a plucking place of a buzzard or a goshawk. So chances are they didn't fear you at all, but the predator that, from their perspective, might still be around, or worse, a predator who might remember this is a good hunting ground for catching crows. I suppose coming together and scolding is a mechanism of "collective defense". I, or rather the magpies in my neighbourhood, had a similar encounter a few years ago. I can't be sure, but from what I could observe the female in a bonded pair who let me feed them was taken by a buzzard only two houses down the road. Since the young were just out of the nest and already flying themselves, the entire family stayed away from the area for days, when they had never missed a day of collecting their ration of peanuts before. Until then I had no idea how noisy a dozen of magpies could be when they are really angry.

Man merkt an deiner Stimme, dass dir die Sache mit den Federn sehr nahe gegangen ist. Für die Krähen bedeutet so ein großer Haufen Federn wohl automatisch Gefahr bzw. Tod, so dass sie sofort darauf reagieren und wahrscheinlich auch selbst wenn du die Federn nur aufgefunden hättest und die Gefahr dennoch noch irgendwo lauern könnte. Schön, dass sie dir so schnell wieder vertraut haben!

Ich liebe deine Videos, versuche jetzt schon seit einem Jahr zwei Krähen für mich zu gewinnen. Sie wissen auf jeden Fall, dass ich für sie immer futter parat lege und folgen mir auch im Umkreis vom Haus. Sind auch nur bei meinem Haus aktiv am suchen, laufen auf dem Giebel rum, was man immer laut hört, aber leider traut sich keiner näher ran zu kommen. Ich probiere es weiter 😅

What kind of crow is Krari? Those black ones with the gray are hooded crows (Nebelkrähen) but Krari and Kruu seem to have a lighter gray. Is it the same kind of a different one?

They are both hooded crows. Krari is a hybrid between carrion and hooded crows.

I don't believe Krari and Kruu thought for even a moment that you had killed a crow. Mine often do something that does not make the least bit of sense. My assumption is that crows are not very good at surpressing their "emotional reflexes" with rational thought. Why should any of my crows assume that anything I do could be a threat to them? They have never seen me do anything that was a threat. They know when I move my arm then I am throwing food. When I stand up then I do it in order to grab more food. So I guess if they were asked "Is it a threat if Hauke raises his arm?" they would deny that with quite some conviction. NONETHELESS nearly all of them immediately switch to flight mode when I throw food. In your case my guess is that Krari did not have to "regain" his trust (that would not happen that quickly, would it?) but that it took some time for his rational assessment to supress his emotional reflex. I even had the idea that you could team up to help him defend his territory. Other crows don't know you. So just show the feathers or a "dead crow" to them and they would panic. But Krari would know that you just make a fool of them... 😄🖤

Dear Hauke, your idea would not be possible as Krari reacts to a dead crow in the same way every other crow does too. He only has trust in me because I try to never scare him in any way. Every time I would show the feathers there would be a new crack in his trust. Edit: And instead of driving other crows away the panic brings many more crows intp Krari's territory each time I show the feathers.
