I get a kick out of watching them skid on the metal plates :D They look like us a little bit. They stiffen their legs and lean back.

Three crows have been showing up at my back door every day for the past two years for their breakfast. They have grown very large compared to other crows that I see around town. Probably due to the large amounts of high-quality food that I provide. They are comfortable with me at about four feet away, but I don't want them to be too comfortable with humans for their safety.

In my experience they don't transfer such a relationship to other humans. It's part of their intelligence. They see you as an individual and will not trust other humans just because they trusted you. So there's no worries there I don't think. I'd say if there is a reason you don't want them too close is for your own sake. I had to shut down the habit of them pecking on my window board at 5 in the morning to get food 😆Once they think they're the ones running the show, things can get quite hectic.

No need to be afraid. Crows can tell humans apart quite well. If they are raised by humans then they get wrongly imprinted and lose (or do not develop) their natural fear of humans in general. But if an adult crow (or even a fledgeling) befriends a human then they hardly change their behaviour towards other humans. I feed 15 to 20 crows on my balcony. Many of them are fine with picking up food 20cm off me or from a spoon which I am holding, at least one even took an egg yolk from my hand. But when I am talking to people on the sidewalk (6m away from my balcony) then nearly all of them stay in the tree and wait for the unknown humans (who are very clearly no threat at all, neither from their behaviour nor from their location) to leave. Some of them do tolerate one of my neighbours now whom I regularly talk to (i.e. they come to the balcony even when he is standing next to it). So he does not count as an unfamiliar human any more I guess.

You don't need to worry about that. They will eventually get comfortable only with you.

Thanks to your videos I am learning to understand my hooded crow couple even better. The male, I named him ChiChi, literally invited me to befriend them on the terrace last May and soon brought also the young one close to me. Now they are part of my family. I am happy to take all your tips on feeding. Many thanks again. Greetings from Austria.

I like watching my youngsters from last year, too, especially how they develop differently. One or two of them (I am really bad at telling them apart... 🙄) have developed special skills / strategies. While all other crows land on the railing of my balcony (where the food is), one of the small ones lands on a high sun protection next to the window. From there (s)he can see everything that is happening on the balcony and most of what is happening around it (especially incoming adult crows I guess): Is the food bowl empty, what is in it, is it just being refilled, are any crows waiting on the railing for it to be refilled or for the currently feeding crow to leave? The consequence is that this "watcher crow" is often the first one to use a new "feeding slot" and is not disturbed while feeding (which is just a few seconds, though). The other young crow (or maybe it's the same) has learnt that if the food bowl contains just food which is not considered luxury enough (fish sticks or for heaven's sake just walnuts...) that it often helps if (s)he does not stand next to the food bowl but gets closer to me and stares at me for a while. Because that usually makes me get a cashew from somewhere and put it on the railing between us, making this youngster the only crow who gets cashews (in that moment).

Wow, the two new members of the cat gang are already best friends with the crows 🙂 Perhaps both parties get their own individual benefit out of this interesting relationship. We all know that cats like to watch birds. And for the crows, the twitching cat tails look very tasty and nutritious too. Maybe the tail falls off easily when the crow can pull it with its beak.

Thanks to you, I am getting to know the two crows that frequent my terrace: Piero and Caterina, who are a nice couple. In this case it is she who preening him 🥴

Your videos are so well produced, great learning tools. But I wonder how your neighbors cope with noise especially when the young are begging for food loud and often.
@KrariTheCrow3 ай бұрын
Yes they are really loud in the summer. Luckily no one complaint until now.

@KrariTheCrow3 ай бұрын

How did you determine the intruder was female?
@KrariTheCrow4 ай бұрын
I determined this from her vocalization. She used the female vocalization several times. In this video she uses it to beg for food from Krari.
