Kraut - Kill For Cash

Just utterly awesome. Kraut, at one point, had to be one of the best and brightest of the burgeoning New York hardcore circuit. This song is like pure adrenaline.

Let's get right back into our survey of first wave hardcore from New York City. So far we've covered The Abused, Heart Attack, Agnostic Front and Urban Waste. Next up is Kraut. A working class band from Astoria, Queens, they gained a lot of notoriety for opening for the Clash at Bonds here in NYC on June 11, 1981. They had not yet released a record and probably submitted a demo tape trying for the gig. I've read that Mick Jones only asked "Are they a Nazi band?' When the answer came back No he said "Sure, put them on the bill." On October 22, 1981 Kraut's first three song e.p. was released. Over the years it's gotten some criticism when stacked up against their second e.p. but the band had been playing together only 3 months and I believe this is a 2 track recording. Kill For Cash is the title song and I really like it. We'll hear more from Kraut in our survey.

willieluncheonette I was at that show along with half of our high school to watch Dave. I just commented on a different video how when their video came out on MTV, we all had to go to Long Island to watch it because Astoria didn’t have cable yet. Another great show I remember with them was with Dead Kennedys in Staten Island. Oh the days of CB GB’s. The place smelled like piss and puke, the music was as loud and loud can be and their beer sucked ass...wouldn’t have change a thing. It was perfection!! My memory of that time is a big blur but I’m told I had a good time!! Thanks for the post.

I remember meeting Steve Jones with Dave somewhere downtown. I didn’t realize who he was because at this time he was overweight and looked more like a Hells Angel. Kraut brings back many memories of my rebellious youth and loving it.

You’re using a definition that didn’t apply back then. Once hardcore started in the US, we used punk and hardcore almost interchangeably for a time. Then suburban vegans started floorpunching and made rules about what could be called what.
