The last time I saw this engine and coal car was in Denver rotting in the harsh Colorado sunshine. It was a wreck, but somehow I sensed this engine had had a great life, and had survived to be only one of three left in existence. I was enchanted with its immense size, and it was forever imprinted into my mind. I am overjoyed to see that Union Pacific has restored this big boy. The engine is a major feat of engineering, and will always live on the minds and hearts of others.
@michaelperkins58587 ай бұрын
This engine came from the Rail Giants collection in Pomona CA. The one in Denver is in the Forney Museum. There are eight of the original twenty five still in existence at museums across the country.

My grandfather was an engineer for the B&O. I was young, but I remember riding in a steam locomotive. I helped the fireman throw coal too! I rode in a diesel a few times with him on a run from Cincinnati’s union terminal to Lima and back too. He was a great man, retired in ‘72, and I have all of his time books and all kinds of railroad stuff.

The UP steam crew have done a great job getting this ancient loco in to such beautiful condition. Well done it is better than new and good for many years. Steam locos are character machines which talk to you so the engineer can tell how to drive it and get the best result. Electric or Diesel locos do not have character hence are less interesting

@rherman90852 жыл бұрын
Typically, they are used as backups .... Just in case something goes wrong.
@FFred-us9tw2 жыл бұрын
The 4015 is specially equipped to provide PTC information to the operator displays in the cab of the 4014. It also provides dynamic braking on long descending grades and acts as a sort of insurance policy to move the 4014 off the mainline if something were to go wrong. There are quite a few videos with interviews with Ed Dickens where he explains all this.
@tomcline56312 жыл бұрын
I think it's cool that U.P. used the 4015 engine number on the (insulting) insurance policy diesel. If you gotta have(and they do) might as well try to make it cool!
@FFred-us9tw2 жыл бұрын
The 4015 is far more than an insurance policy in case the 4014 breaks down. It’s there primarily for dynamic breaking on long descending grades. It also provides all the PTC data to the operator screens in the cab of the 4014.
@tomcline56312 жыл бұрын
