Die Stadt Hemmoor war viele Jahre lang die Heimat einer der größten Zementfabriken der Welt; Portland Zementfabrik Hemmoor. Die Manufaktur wurde vor Ort gebaut, weil die Region reich an Kreide ist, einem der Erze, die zur Herstellung von Zement verwendet werden. Einige Regionen mit größeren Erzmengen wurden bis zu ihrem Maximum ausgegraben - wodurch riesige Krater entstanden. 1983 wurde die Zementproduktion in der Region aus wirtschaftlichen Gründen eingestellt. Der große ausgegrabene Krater begann ein strukturelles Risiko für die Region darzustellen, da es mehrere unterirdische Wasserkanäle um ihn herum gab. Sechs Jahre nach der Einstellung der wirtschaftlichen Aktivitäten in dem Ort übernahm das Wasser den großen Krater und bildete einen 33 Hektar großen, 60 Meter tiefen See, der auf Portugiesisch „Kreidesee“ genannt wurde.

Alles was da unten zu finden ist wurde so arangiert. Es gibt sogar ein kleines U-Boot. Wo ich in der Grundschule war haben sie den Letzten Schornstein gesprengt war anfang der 80er. Mit dem Zement wurde auch der Sockel der Freiheitsstaue gefertigt

The factory was built on site because the region is rich in chalk, one of the ores used to make cement. Some regions with larger amounts of ore were excavated to their maximum - creating huge craters. In 1983, cement production in the region was discontinued for economic reasons. The large excavated crater began to pose a structural risk to the region as there were multiple underground water channels around it. Six years after economic activities in the town ceased, the water took over the large crater and formed a 33-hectare, 60-meter-deep lake called "Chalk Lake"
