Everyone who played Warcraft 3's campaign know EXACTLY how much Arthas's betrayal hurt Uther. Ever since he decided to purge Stratholme, killed his own father and then defiled everything he swore to protect up until the moment he killed Uther simply to get the urn for Kel'Thuzad's remains.And that urn contained his father's ashes. So yeah. Seeing the guy you've personally trained to be a noble paladin and a protector of the weak doing all that will fucking scar you.

I love the emphasis during both "He was my student" lines. The first time he said it the emphasis was on "student" to imply the connection between them. But the second emphasis was on "my" which takes ownership that Uther was the one who failed him. Such a nice little touch.

The interesting thing is, IF the arbiter had judged Arthas I actually don't think he would of been sent to the Maw. Arthas was many things before he took up Frostmourne. Brash, Ambitious, arrogant, but he sure as shit wasn't evil. Did he do bad things? Absolutely, but he did so in his mind, in order to ensure the protection of his Kingdom. Frostmourne corrupted him, twisted his ideals and turned him into the very thing he was fighting to destroy. At the end of the day, is that sufficient to send him to the Maw to suffer for all eternity? I don't think so. Because they let demons, under their own watch, steal the Blade and helm of Domination from them to begin with. Yes i'm sure the Jailor had much to do with it. But my point is, would Arthas had been sent to the Maw? I don't think so. So the reprocussions of Uther throwing him in without being judged could be major down the line.
@theycallmebad
@theycallmebad 4 жыл бұрын
So where would Arthas go then? Because it sure as hell wouldn't be Bastion or any of the good realms. I feel that people are a little too bias when it comes to Arthas. Yes, he was a cool character and a good person, but he did a lot of horrible things before any dark whispers in his mind - things he chose to do on his own volition - and since he consumed Ner'zhul and became the single, dominant mind of the Lich King, he continued to willingly claim millions of lifes and do horrible things, corrupted or not. Not gonna lie, I'll be disappointed if they try to redeem him and make him a good guy. At that point Garrosh, Kael'thas, Kel´Thuzad, and Sylvanas needs to be 100% redeemed as well since everything they did pale in comparison to what Arthas did.
@Danothyus1

I actually think sending him to the Maw is a mistake specifically because the Arbiter would have noticed that Arthas was an agent of the Jailer, not for any other reason. It would have caused pandemonium in the Shadowlands if this was found, but Uther’s actions circumvented that

Hey guys, I just noticed something that was a major callback to warcraft 3, particularly when Arthas takes up Frostmourne. Double checking the scene, here's part of the line that Muradin said while reading the plinth: "Just as the blade rends flesh, so too must power scar the spirit." When I first watched this I was trying to figure out how Uther was able to reach Bastion and train there after his death, because he should have been trapped in Frostmourne during the time between then and Arthas' death. The answer to how this could be possible dawned on me when I re-watched the stabbing scene, the golden light that shot away wasn't Uther's connection to the Light like I originally thought, it was the half of his soul that upheld the Libram of Justice (see Warcraft Chronicles Vol 2, pg 154), the very thing he was fixated on throughout his training in Bastion. I think we just got another glimpse at the fracturing of the Light.

Definitely coming back to check Shadowlands. I don’t know for how long I’ll stay, and FFXIV is my main MMO now, but WoW was the first and it will always hold a special place. As for the video, it didn’t disappoint. We see someone trying to do good and turning to evil from the lack of support from those she would have expected to provide it. Kinda mirrors Arthas at Stratholme where if Jaina and Uther had supported him things may have turned very differently. The purge of the city was horrible, but I still doubt there was a better solution available at the time with what was known about the plague and the speed with which it killed. Side note: given that both the Helm and Frostmourne were artifacts from the Maw, could the plague of undeath also come from there, and be the first step in funneling souls to the Jailer, even behind the back of the Lich Kings?

See, the more I learn about Uther, the more I get annoyed that he's presented as so absolutely awesome / the greatest hero ever. And Jaina too, actually. They both stood outside of Stratholme, KNOWING Arthas was going into the town to murder innocent people - not "at some point," not "in the future," but "he is walking away from us, into this place, and will snuff out the life of everyone present, whether they are untainted or not." No matter who Arthas was to them, these are utterly innocent victims, clearly in need of protection, the very epitome of needing a hero. And the two of them walked away. They didn't have to kill him to stop him, they didn't even have to protect the people for very long if we're being practical, since from the conversations we know the plague worked fast and anyone infected would turn quickly. Heck, we could even argue that stopping him was immediately their DUTY as his underlings, since the culling not only destroyed his soul (which Uther pretty much told him it would) but probably damned anyone who helped, i.e. the other paladins, who were also under Uther's care and should have been protected from putting their own souls at risk. But instead they turned their backs and allowed the atrocity to happen, and as far as I can tell, nobody's ever even called them on it. THEY themselves don't even consider those reasons as part of their failure!

When the good people attempt to look at their own and say. "Submit and follow blindly" They should only imagine that their plans are going to fail. I've heard people say that it was Uther's connection to the light which allowed part of his soul to resist the pull of Frostmourne. It would make sense, but I have to wonder if the part of Uther's soul that the Light saved was actually the part which was in Frostmourne. It's possible that it was destroyed with Frostmourne, but at least it didn't stray from the ideals he held in life. I think it's really interesting that the two fragments of his soul developed in such different ways, and I'm hoping that the part claimed by Frostmourne is still around in some form so that he can become whole again.

I feel like uniting and healing his soul will end up playing a part in our character's storyline down the road. Maybe he'll be a key player in helping us defeat Sylvanas and the Jailer. Both Uther and her were greatly affected by Arthas' actions so it would be pretty poetic. Also I totally headcanon that when Tirion was calling to the light during the end of the LK encounter it was Devos and Uther who actually assisted in him breaking Frostmourne.

Arthas was always a good person and a strong Paladin who served the Light until he got corrupted by the idea of vengeance down the line. The path he took to try and stop Mal'Ganis who he thought was responsible for the Scourge and the death of his people, is what led him to pick up the cursed blade Frostmourne which slowly consumed him. The action itself was noble since all he did was to try and save his kingdom. He even states that he would do anything, even picking up a cursed blade, if that meant the salvation of Lordaeron. We can all assume that the curse and the constant whispers of Ner'zhul made him lose track of his original goals and himself. Even after he fell down the path of righteousness and became the Lich King, the remnants of his soul/being still held back the Scourge quite a lot from destroying Azeroth. If his intentions were total annihilation, I think he would have let the undead roam free. Not saying he was good as the LK, which he was not. I'm just saying you can't judge someone's soul like it was 1+1=2 since there are a lot of factors to consider. To be honest, I think this was serious considering he was never judged and might have not even been assigned to the Maw but another place for his redemption which I feel like he deserves.

Arthas did NOTHING wrong. It was the Blade that controlled his actions from the very second he picked it up. His only 'Sin', is ignorance to power of the Dark Blade's corruption. Arthas only wanted to save his people, and the Blade changed his view and manipulated him to darkness and evil. And when he died, and was reborn as the Lich King, he had no control over any of his actions. This is why when he finally died as the Lich King, the first words were 'Is It Over'. Cause he had no control up to that point, when the Blade was destroyed. So Arthas' Soul was Good, tho slightly tainted, and did not deserve going to the Maw. What Uthar did, was an act of Pure Evil, Sentencing an Innocent Soul, to Eternal Damnation.

actually "can you blame him"... yea I can He left Arthas alone at stratholme, moment he needed him too much so I can blame uther for what he is doing but he has an actual reason now because his soul is broken and noble part was within blade before he ascended so Uther we see is not a whole soul but other half of proud and just one. This one thinks its whole but his vengence is making him only confused so this soul has a reason to be like this His other half, one in frostmourne would NEVER done this... he didnt convince us to kill Arthas because he was vengeful because he was convinced he was lost beyond return... he didnt belive we could save him and him being alive is too dangerious and when he was mentioning him he tells us that Arthas will be the boy that was his student in his memories, not Lich King This shows that actual, prouder self of Uther did no hate Arthas. He was instead so sad and blamed himself for what happened but he knew he had to die so he helped us to do it. Uther's this half on the other hand is in pain, shattered and confused with vengence.

Two sides of Uther's soul: His human side that forgave ARTHAS as an individual and then you have his PALADIN side that could not forgive Arthas the PRINCE and LICH KING for what he did. I wonder if we're gonna find the human part of Uther's soul and make him WHOLE in shadowlands?

One thing I have been wondering about, since when does a Prince outrank a General on a battlefield...especially in a matter of citywide mass murder
@MrGalactus95

A prince can also be a general. So Arthas was the heir to the throne, leader of that specific army therefore he outranked Uther i'm guessing.

I haven't played WoW for a long long time (since Wrath era) but my interest is piqued by this cinematic. The CG one was very underwhelming despite being flashy, but this gave a relative outsider a much better idea of what awaits and the tone.

I appreciate Blizzard's attempt to fix people up mentally, so that they'll be ready to ascend to Bastion, but this video is a bit too much for me. I don't think Uther should throw Arthus into the maw because that's a bit going overboard.

I've loved BFA, it's not perfect sure, I can see the flaws, but they don't bug me personally. I liked Titan Forging, but it was a minor thing for me, and if so many people hated it then I'm glad it's gone. It's replacement in Corruption is not an ideal solution, but for a last patch feature it's great to see lasers from the sky wreaking vengeance. The only gripe that gets under my skin is how meaningless the choice between Sylvanas and Saurfang was, oh, I get a different cutscene, and that's it? I'm with Sylvanas, ride or die, kill'em all and don't even let the Arbiter sort them out. And I feel bad for Alliance players because they didn't even get an option meaningless as it might be. I'm very intrigued by what's coming in Shadowlands and I can't wait. Dark Lady watch over you all!

Though the Sylvanas fans on the forums are already trying to use the soul splitting thing as a 'get out of evil' free redemption card for her...claiming that means we've had the 'evil' version running around on Azeroth since Arthas raised her and there's somehow a 'good' version roaming around somewhere in the Shadowlands. >_>; Frankly I think the Uther splitting was just because of his dedication to/plea to the light at the moment of his death. His more forgiving, noble side seemed to have been sucked into Frostmourne, and his more angry, vengeful side paradoxically went to Bastion. My question is...when Frostmourne was shattered, should his soul have been healed? Or will there be a quest down the road specifically to locate the missing part of his soul and make him whole again? With Arthas I think the problem lies with the fact that Uther and Devos skipped the normal order of things. Arthas probably would've been sent to the Maw anyway, but it wasn't their place to do so out of personal reasons, but the Arbiter. Uther DID have that moment of regret and hesitation, but Devos goaded him on to give in to his anger.

This is wrong. It's not right. It's not their job to decide fate, and mete punishment; only to ferry souls from one existence to another. They've crossed a line here, and upset the balance that was already tenuous at best. I do not forsee it ending well. Not to mention, I can't particularly say Arthas' Soul was deserving of eternal damnation and punishment. His actions were not his own.

I wonder when will Blizzard stop shitting on Arthas... How many times is it stated in the books and in the games that he lost his soul the moment he grabbed frostmourne. The dude literaly had no soul his soul was stuck in his own blade. And still while he was trapped he tried to battle his evil side and keep the scourge at bay. It was bad enough they send him to hell once they killed him(the good side that was trapped) , but now we have to watch Uther grab an innocent guy (yes that is the real Arthas, because his soul was finaly released from frostmourne) throw him into hell and say it is justice... Disgusting

I can definitely blame him. Arthas had his soul taken by Frostmourne and his actions were not his own. The actions of Arthas as a death knight and as he Lich King might as well have been the Jailer.

Prediction; arthas redemption arc in the maw. Uther (this uther) is a version of his soul hell bent on 'justice'. Uther will be a boss we need to fight to reconnect the 2 halves or some bs like that. Sylvanas slips away/turns out to be helping fix the maw in some convuluted way. Next expansion void lords.

Correct me if I'm wrong... but Arthus isn't really an evil person, right? I mean everything he did including slaughter the village is out of his fixation to save his kingdom. His travel to the North is also to kill the evil. He just got corrupted by the Lich King. So here we have Uther picking up Arthus' soul (uncorrupted?) and just cast him to an eternal of damnation of the Maw. I feel like this conflict with his character in game of being just, but then again character development!
@johnbacon8394
@johnbacon8394 4 жыл бұрын
kinda, he was willing to do anything for his kingdom but frostmourne basically corrupted him, still killing an entire city of people is not exactly something a good person would do.
@tzoanast1061
@tzoanast1061 4 жыл бұрын
Well not an evil person but he did do a lot of bad things just for vengeance like killing the mercenaries and burning the ships of his men to leave them stuck in Northrend but the attrocities he committed after he picked up Frotstmourne though were done by a different Arthas, part of his soul was consumed and he was driven mad by the blade.
@arcadeicon8314
@arcadeicon8314 4 жыл бұрын
Exactly. He wasn't truly good, not by any means. But, it is highly unlikely that the Arbiter would have sent him to the Maw. So instead of going to Revendreth like (presumably) Garrosh, he was sent straight into the Maw with no chance of being judged fairly.
@sussudio5210
@sussudio5210 4 жыл бұрын
He IS evil - the Arthas novel shows him explicitly KNOWINGLY killing the last part of his humanity that could have saved him. He does it of his own free will and without any persuasion or loss of control. A lot of “fans” ignore this because they wanna believe he was never in control...but he was. It’s that simple. He killed his own humanity, and then Ner’zul to become the Lich King. As such, he deserves the Maw - he made the choices to be evil and he should be judged for it as irredeemable.
@tzoanast1061
@tzoanast1061 4 жыл бұрын
@@sussudio5210 That was the insane Arthas whose soul had been consumed to a large degree, his innocent old self didn't make the choice. Quite the opposite that good part of him was sitting on the table with Nerzul waiting for an answer, the Arthas that took the choice to kill his younger self and Nerzul was the insane Arthas. You can have your own opinions that's fine but the game explicitly states how Arthas was driven mad and had his soul consumed by Frostmourne when he picked it up, knowing those facts, I'm sorry but I just can't agree that the DK Arthas was the Paladin Arthas. I don't agree with the "He didn't have any control" statement, he wasn't mind controlled, he did what he did because he wanted to but that's also because he was insane and with half a soul BECAUSE of Frostmourne so technically he WAS manipulated.

....I dunno I guess I am in the minority but this was completely meh. Maybe it's because I really have no interest in the Shadowlands story and feel that it cheapens the lore. I don't like how they're using this expansion to do a ton of lore finagling and manipulation, especially with characters whose stories and arcs were completed per the original team. I just.... have lost all faith in the writing team and I don't believe anything is sacred to the current dev team, even Arthas' death and fate. As someone who LOVES that story, I was fully satisfied with how it ended and now.... they're going to screw with it for subs and money. Nope. Not me.
