I don't just "Like" this song; rather, I "Love" it. Like so many of Kristofferson's songs the words are wayyyyyyyyyy more important than the music, as is the case with this song. I've been listening to Kristofferson since the very early 1970s, and he just keeps getting better and better and more and more relevant.

I love the guy in crowd looking confuse. He’s thinking “I always liked him, but now that I know he’s a commie, I don’t think I like him anymore.” Found this while looking for things to do on an upcoming trip to Nicaragua. I suggest that anyone considering a trip to Mexico look at Nicaragua. Very inexpensive and off the beaten path.

The fact of the matter is that US set up brutal dictators mainly in Latin America, that were suppose to support US military and economic interest. In the times of the cold war there were only two interest's. The US and the USSR interest. Many small countries were exploited by one of them, and had no choice but to teem up with the other one. In the and they were dependent on their ally's, entangled in a conflict they had no effect on. The victorious right/re wright history as they please..

His point was to protest US imperialism and an expression that following the 1990 elections in Nicaragua, in which the Sandinistas lost, the country was free to choose its own destiny. Hes not singing about Ortega. You have to take into account that this song came out in 1990, just after the Sandinistas lost the election. The point of the song was that Nicaragua was indeed free and could decide its own future now. This was long before Ortega would return to power and go completely insane with power. But in 1990, Kristofferson was speaking to the issue of US imperialism and our funding of the brutal contras.
