When i was young I discover a secret spot that had lots of crabs, fish, shrimp and clams. A few months after going there someone purchase the lot and make it into a loading lot for cargo boats and my spot was gone but those memories still live in my mind. I still remember filling 2, 5-gallon buckets of fish, crab, shrimp and clams in less than 1 hour and having a seafood feast for my family later that evening.

Have to ask since the shell fish you picked are bottom feeders what of the stuff they've eaten? What about having a sewage outlet around the coast ? Do any of the shellfish eat in those areas? As a kid I was always told..."DON'T eat the beards of the mussels " ?? Where did that come from ?
@alganhar1
@alganhar1 6 жыл бұрын
The 'beards' or Byssal threads are what the mussel uses to anchor itself to the substrate. They are not poisonous or harmful in anyway, but not particularly pleasant to eat. With shop bought mussels the byssal threads will have been mostly removed by the fishmonger or the farmer (most shop bought mussels are farmed these days) so they may not be present. As for what they eat, depends, most things you can get rid of simply by soaking the mussels or other shellfish in water for an hour or so before cooking. That will flush out most things. In fact it is advisable to do exactly that with many filter feeders such as clams, as they actually ingest some of the substrate, biting into a moutful of sand is a good way to ruin your clam chowder! If in doubt, soak them.
