I was excited to find 'The Four Ancient Books' in a used bookshop about eight years ago; but, although I like the way it is arranged and, as you say, some of the commentary is interesting, I always thought there was something off about the translations. Glad to hear you confirm this, and many thanks for the alternative recommendations!

Not quite sure what you're asking. Ford never translated the Book of Taliesin. Do you mean his translation of The Battle of the Trees in his 'Mabinogi and other Medieval Welsh Tales'? According to his notes in the book he was working from Evans' edition, but he had some help from the likes of Brinley Roberts and Eric Hamp. I don't think it's a bad translation, but I think Marged Haycock's work in the intervening years means it's possible to make better translations now.

@@KrisHughes yes, I was referring to his translation of The Battle of the Trees. First, I read Haycock's translation and then I listened to Ford's in the FortressofLugh channel and they just looked nothing alike. Thanks for clearing things out for me, I will trust Haycock.
