The commenters below who are saying that Baiul, Kerrigan, Chen, and even BONALY (?!!) were better skaters than Kristi in 94 are batshit insane. Kristi would've wiped the floor with the entire Lillehammer ladies field. It's crazy how she kept getting better and better for years AFTER she won the Olympics.
@queenmaoasada84479 жыл бұрын
Kristi is one of more all-time favorites but, ummm, have you actually seen the Lillehammer programs? No one could wipe the ice with Oksana... All the top ladies (including Kristi in the pros) were as good as it gets.
@SDoesNotKnow8 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. Kristi had much better skating skills, and attempted more difficulty. She would have needed to adapt some of the moves to make it fit with competitive skating, but then it's not like Oksana won with a combination spin, any footwork, transitions, difficult and varied edge work, or a triple combination (not even a triple-double or triple sequence). Kristi's choreography was also a lot more sophisticated and artistic than that Broadway medley atrocity Oksana used. Oksana's Swan Lake SP was brilliant, however. Looking at what Kristi did throughout her career, it seems like the code of points was meant for a skater like her.
@srpdirectortm84628 жыл бұрын
Yes, I have seen the Lillehammer programs, and I stand by what I said. The top ladies at that Olympics were mediocre at their best (aside from Chen, who later became a much better and more complete skater, but wasn't there yet in '94). Oksana's LP was a disaster full of posing, lack of transitions, lack of combinations of any kind, and two-footed and underrotated jumps. Again, I repeat - Kristi would have wiped the ice with the whole field.
@jondavwal137 жыл бұрын
Oksana didn't have one triple triple combo and no combination that even included a triple jump. She threw in a double axel double toe at the very end because she blew all her combination attempts. Her technique was incredibly suspect on anything but solo jumps. So yes, she would have come in fifth if she competed against all the Albertville women. And she was gifted the gold medal in Lillehammer. I can't stand Kerrigan, but she won that night.
@quiddy7 жыл бұрын
Jonathan Wallach agreed. Kristi’s Triple Lutz triple Toe would be unmatched in the olympics until 2010. She would have easily beat 2006 gold medalist program.

Kristi’s greatest skill is her consistency. Mentally tough. Pair that with her balance of technique and artistry. 100% would’ve won in 94.

I love the fact that she had a true lutz jump, and that she really was a pair skater who decided just a year before the Olympics to switch to singles instead.
@michaelnaraval8647 жыл бұрын
She actually trained both pairs and singles from an early age, but before the move to singles only, she was more successful in pairs with partner Rudy Galindo, than she was in singles. The reason she chose to concentrate on singles was actually not by preference. Her coach Christy Ness, who also coached her and Galindo in pairs, married a Canadian man and decided to move to Canada to be with him. Rudy and Kristi were both invited to join her to continue being coached by her, but Rudy's financial situation didn't allow him to do so. This was why their pairs partnership ended, and why Kristi, who did move to Canada to continue training with Ness, ultimately became a singles only skater.
@pueraeternus1116 жыл бұрын
Yes, you're right. But she could've chosen to stay in California and focus on pairs, too.

The ladies in '94 were all brilliant, including Kristi in her pro career. But before the rules changes (i.e., when they started letting skaters earn a living while competing in amateurs) it was not at all uncommon for Gold medalists to retire... Even after the new rules, Lipinski, Hughes, and Arakawa retired after winning Gold, and even Kim considered it. Witt was an exception. #GoldForMao2018

I feel as though the secret to a quad turn lies in Kristie Yamaguchi... because while people may complain about the short height, im just amazed she can make so many rotations with so little room o.O

If she could've she would've. Yamaguchi didn't have the guts to put it on the line in Lillehammer. She would've been the hunted. The one under the pressure. I'm sure she would've crumbled. Its easy to play big shot when everything is geared to showcase you.

Oksana Baiul's skating was not that good. She played off that orphan "boo-hoo" story of hers down to the core. People felt sorry for her. Without her story, she's just another skater who would have lost to Kristi if they competed against each other.
@annecohen89273 жыл бұрын
You showed a huge amount of insensitivity to Oksana. She lost her mother to cancer when Oksana was just a little girl so she has every entitlement to her emotional response, as lets say, to her gold medal win, that her mom never had a chance to see. Oksana was almost left, literally as an orphan when her father abandoned her at a young age. Clearly, Anjong, you do care less about people who endured greater tragedy than, you. Sergei Grinkov is another example of a figure skater who lost his life from a genetic form of heart disease at a very young age, and during the prime of his time!
@jantellit12311 жыл бұрын
She would have lost that's why she didn't compete. The games were open she built up her reputation by skating against others who were being torn down by the media, & injured. Kristi's flow is weak & she's really slow her edges are very good either. Oksana superior to Kristi. Imo Kristi wasn't better than Nancy. Both NK & OB are more polished & elegant skaters.

Oksana almost didn't have a combination in her program because she can't jump and she threw in a double Axel double toe with 5 seconds left. A novice combination. Ugh. Ignorance.
@jantellit12311 жыл бұрын
No she wouldn't Kerrigan, Baiul, Chen Lu Witt even Bonaly were all better. If she could have won another she would've competed. Baiul better than Yamaguchi so was Kerrigan imo. Kristi was just another vulture.
