How to paint dot mandalas with Kristin Uhrig #13- Graduation Cap

I usually paint on rocks and canvasas, but a friend asked if I would paint a mandala on her daughter's graduation cap....so, here it is! Before I began painting the hat with craft acrylics, I sprayed it with Thompson's Waterseal- Fabric Seal and let it dry over night. This helped the paint dots to "stand up" rather than seap into the fabirc of the hat. Paints used on this project:
FolkArt metalic Inca Gold
FolkArt Extreme glitter Emerald
Folk Art Satin School bus
Martha Stewart Pearl mother of Pearl
Americana Satin white wash
Golden fluid acrylics green
Dotting tools used: Red Heart Crystallite Crochet Hooks (available on Amazon)

Great question, Karen Apple. I usually just "wing it". Sometime I like how it turns out and sometimes I wash the rock, or repaint the canvas black and try again. For this project, I knew it was a one shot deal...kind of scary! So, I got some dark green card-stock and did a couple of designs on them and then picked the one I liked the most and recreated it on the hat.

I am not a fan of green and yellow, either, so I was I little stumped at first. I made a couple of practice designs on some card stock until I got something that I thought would look good from far away. Kind of surprised myself! Just goes to show you, go ahead and try something you may not think you'll like!

What a Fantastic idea!! Beautiful! Easy to spot from the top visitor's rows, too! I've had 4 graduate and the sea of hats on the arena floor make it difficult to take quick photos.
