I love your explanation of dominant colors. I think most experienced artists understand this, but it’s a difficult concept for beginners and (as you pointed out) not properly reflected in a lot of tutorials. I’ll definitely be adding this chart to my technique book.

Absolutely brilliant idea abs love the un-limited palette. So much better than using pre-mixed palettes. This adds to the creativity in the project. Thank you

Thank you Kristin for sharing your minimum colour chart. It was amazing all the beautiful colours you got from those 5 colours. I think we have been spoiled with the variety we can buy now and should exercise our minds and creativity much more. Have a great day 🤗

Ok this swatch chart makes so much sense in the way you chose to do it-it saves space and really shows the options! Great set of shades. I could see doing these with the addition of Buff Titanim to have the option for creamy shades as well. So now I’m going to have to try this this weekend. Thanks for sharing!

I’m definitely gonna do this! When I bought my paints a few years ago I got a set with tons of colors and I still don’t know how to mix colors! To be fair though, I don’t do a lot of painting until time for Christmas cards. Having a limited pallet actually sounds freeing, if that makes sense.

Please tell tell us what kind of Cadmium Yellow are you using? Cad. Y. Light or medium? It looks lemony to me so I assume it is Cad. Y. Light.

Hi, new subscriber here. As you've said on your video you are using actually a CMY primary palette with two additions. Your moody colours are the actually secondary sap green and Indigo that is there as a darkener. As Sap Green is always a mix it would helped a lot if you mention which brand of sap green you do use because it is not all sap green the same. I'd also like to ask why did you choose Cad Yellow as your primary Yellow. Cad Yellow is a PY35 and rather opaque. Why didn't you choose any other more transparent yellow, like PY154, PY151, PY175, PY150, PY3 etc? What is the reasoning behind this particular choice of yellow? Thank you in advance for the/any reply. Greetings from Athens Greece.

@@creativecolours2022 interesting! My knowledge of color preferences mainly come from experimentation and my own color play in figuring out what I like best. The hue of Cad yellow feels like it leans “cool” to me and I love the way it mixes with blues
@creativecolours2022
@creativecolours2022 2 ай бұрын
@@kristinvanleuven Hi Kristin and thank you for your reply. :) Cad yellow's hue is not particularly unique. It is a mid (cool/warm) yellow, and PY154 f.e has similar hue and it is more transparent. Cadmium yellow is opaque so there are more chances to mix muddy colours with the Sap Green and the Indigo which are convenience colours and as such made by two or three sometimes pigments. So when you mix Cad with Sap and Cad with Indigo you end up mixing with each of them three and perhaps four pigments simultaneously so an opaque selection is somewhat risky. I've just asked because I found this selection of yellow somewhat unusual for such a minimal colour selection. I f.e prefer all transparent colours. Nickel Azo Yellow PY150 because it is the most transparent of all yellows a reddish Q. Rose PV19, Phthalo Blue Red Shade and Prussian OR Phthalo Blue Green Shade. In other words a mid yellow a mid cool/warm red (something between a red and a magenta) , a cool blue and a warm blue, all of them transparent and non granulating.

@kristinvanleuven

@@amitaanand5897 magenta cannot be mixed as it’s a primary color according to the CMY color theory, so for each of the 5 main colors I’ve used the color straight from the tube. Indigo can be mixed with cerulean and magenta with a touch of yellow, but it’s a tricky mix and I like the convenience of having it on the palette
