Kristy you are so lovely. I asked for a “it’s just paper” brush when you were offering to send out art supplies to people in need and you sent me the whole set and your palette. You were one of the people who inspired me to pick up a brush and start watercoloring and this gift means so much to me. Your palettes colours are so perfect. They activate so easily and every single colour is exquisite. I did not realise how badly I needed a neon yellow in my set. I honestly think the colour selection is perfect. You are an angel on earth. Your brushes are the best brushes I have ever owned. If I could only use one brush it would be your it’s just paper dagger. I am so excited to buy your stamp set. Thank you so much for bringing watercolour into my life. You have given me something that brings me so much joy.

This is the response, from Alina Gallo, to my inquiry. “You are absolutely right, the Stil de grain, light is very unusual, and does have a material texture. I am not sure if you noticed, but it even smells a bit like herbal tea. This is a very natural plant based pigment made from real buckthorn berries, and it will not behave like an ochre or a raw sienna. While it has a unique acid yellow hue, it does not mix well. We selected this color for the yellow range in the Naturale 3 palette for its unique hue and origin. Our Naturale collection has many yellow earth and siennas, and this Stil de grain light is unlike any of the natural yellows that we have encountered. If this is boring feel free to skip this paragraph! I'd love to give you some background on this pigment. Stil de grain, light is the second most expensive pigment in the palette due to the complex process and sheer quantity of plant matter needed to create it. The plant berries are steeped in a lye, then precipitated with alum to create a translucent yellow “lake” pigment. Different hues can be reached by the addition of tin, copper or iron salts. The temperature also has an effect on the resulting color: this lemon yellow lake is obtained at 50°C. We completely understand that you are finding it a difficult and impractical color. It was a strong choice to include such an eccentric pigment. The Naturale 3 is one of our most unique palettes. Thank you again for your email and taking the time to let us know your experience. Best regards, Alina”

I truly love my A Gallo watercolors. I find them beautiful, graceful, consistent, and calming. I love the scent of Rosemary when I open the tin. I love the transparency, every color and the lack of toxic substances. I enjoy the shades that are a whisper of intensity and the historical aspects of the colors. I enjoy that I know which colors give a punch and those that speak quietly. I find A Gallo watercolors to have the widest range of communication right from my palette without having to either dilute or intensify. I have 3 favorite brands of watercolors, and A Gallo is in that group!

Exactly!!
@katalinelo80118 ай бұрын
I bought the natural 1, especially for the muted tones. Some of them just need a bit more time with a drop of water on them to properly rewet. It's in their nature I suppose. Handmade would never be the same as industry products. I always achieved beautiful results with them.
@Mirrigold8 ай бұрын
I use the gritty textures for landscape, rocks, mountains, tree trunks, fences etc, anything that you want to seem like it's a bit rough. I've been in love with Alina's paints since I got my first set. I've slowly collected them and now have around 50 of them, including the Naturale 3 palette, which is beyond beautiful for anything that needs to have "luminance" in the painting.
@KristyRice8 ай бұрын
So I’m assuming the gritty textured paint is a final layer? Or?
@Mirrigold8 ай бұрын
@@KristyRice can be yep, or just mix one of the gritty colours in with one that isn't to get the texture in the mix. I've also found that the gritty ones have a better pigment payoff if I've rewetted them for a few minutes first and got a stickier top layer.

Hi Kristy! Your video is very timely for me. I just unwrapped my A.Gallow Naturale Set of 24 yesterday, the day you released this video. How's that for synchronicity? My first palette from A. Gallow was the Signature Set of 24 & that's the one I would recommend to those wanting to start out with A.Gallow paints. Lovely colors! This Naturale set was kind of 'meh' for me - a LOT of the colors are just variations of the same pigment! But I haven't painted with it yet so maybe it will grow on me. Love the painting you did with them! Here is what I think some of your colors are: I have an NR9 Rose Madder so maybe that's your "NR31"? It was in my palette right before Ercolano Red. I also have a PBr8 Green Umber. PY43G is Gold Ochre. "Podia" is Raw Sienna Badia PY43. I think others have already ID'd Zirconium, Morrelone, & Slate Gray. I also have Copper Blue (fabulous color!), Lapis Lazuli, & Indigo in my set. Third, I ordered Kolbie's second book & recently rec'd the first one because I decided to start there. I'll eventually get her third also! Haven't worked through them yet but I think I'm really going to like them. And last, I love love LOVE your palettes. I bought them all! I just recently put my Da Vinci paints in the large Botanical one but may switch those out for Sennelier, I haven't decided for sure. I hope you make some more 48 pan palettes because having unique palettes allows me to easily identify the paints I have. Thank you, Kristy!

that blue is Zirconium. I believe that earth tone is Badia - raw sienna Badia, that one you think is a raisin color could be Nottoro - which is one of their best colors IMO. It could help you with a few of your unlabeled and mixed up colors. I would post a picture if it would let me. I love A. Gallo and I absolutely love the naturale muted earthy colors. They paint the most gorgeous of landscapes. I’m the opposite of you in that a lot of the time I think less color is better. I don’t like bright, bold, and garish. Those "gritty paints" are perfect for landscapes for lazy people like me 😂. These paints do all the work because they already have the texture and uneven spread included that is necessary to create interest in landscapes like in rocks, mountains, distant grasses, foliage, shrubbery... That tone of voice is the same one a woman who was doing checkout at Kroger when my friend and I with freshly dyed hair showed up at 1 in the morning to buy some emergency extras for a wedding we were catering that was to happen the next day. Bride had added twenty more people to the guest list and didn't tell us until the day before. OMG. Anyway, my hair was plum colored, and my friend's was russet. The checkout lady looked at our hair, and she said to me, "I love your hair." She looked at my friend. "Your's looks natural." Same tome of voice--slightly disappointed but not disparaging. You made me laugh aloud and nearly spit coffee. Also, I'm not Catholic, but St. Francis is one of my favorite saints. Also St. Hildegard von Bingen.

you could mix the gritty ones with more intense tones to give them granulating properties. I do that with Potters Pink to get more texture in my portraits (depending on what the goal for the painting is, I prefer skin that's not completely smooth). I also like a bit of granulation when panting air and atmosphere. I do like layering a lot, so I like sheer colours... though I also love the contrast with more opaque ones. I don't know what to do with green Earth and similar colours... I like the colour in theory, but even compared to the softer greens like viridian (i.e. no phthalos) it's just looks weak and faulty. I still haven't found anything I could combine it with. still when I see in in a brand I am always temped to buy it again because it just looks so nice on swatches haha
