I'm a long-time Photoshop and Clip Studio Paint user who only recently "discovered" Krita. I was so amazed at its abilities, I switched to using it almost exclusively for my digital painting. I especially love the charcoal brushes. Hands down, they are the best digital charcoal brushes I have ever used, and the closest to traditional charcoal. Considering how many charcoal brushes I have purchased and downloaded for the other two programs, this is saying a lot!

Atticus, thank you for the comment! I'm LOVING the traditional style brushes in Krita, they have that perfect flow and you're right, those charcoal brushes are absolutely stunning!

@@ArtOfWesGardner Also, I purchased your Platinum brush pack - I love your smudge brushes!! (Some women buy shoes - for me it's brush packs. I just can't help myself.) :)

Hi, really a good video. I created the brushes for rgba and more brushes for the upcoming rgbawet. It is great to see an artist and trainer like you talking about Krita. I would like to talk with you and sharing ideas for more powerful brushes. Do you like the idea? 😁

Krita's a show-stopper for sure, and the fact that it's no charge to download and use feels like stealing LOL! Thanks for the kind words!

With scant experience of digital art I stumbled across Krita a few years ago. I could not believe this open source powerhouse. I think it was V 2. something at the time, I went from fighting Painter to thinking well maybe I can paint something. I did one sketch of a head. Then stuck to the then basic block brush and tried to paint a steampunk robot in my second try in order to learn this. I made Editor's Choice on CG Talk right there. You're right in all you say about this revelation. Just for the unbelievers out there. Listen To Wes.

Great video. Hey. I am wondering if you can explain how you set up two side by side areas of the canvas like you have in this video. I can open two windows and tile them but they aren't as streamlined looking as in this video? thanks.

You bet! So in this one I'm using a program called PureRef, which is totally free (they take donations, which I highly recommend!), and can be found at www.pureref.com - You can drag and drop reference images, make reference boards, make the full reference board grayscale, a lot of really cool features! I can't imagine painting from reference without it!
@desotopete
@desotopete 3 жыл бұрын
@@ArtOfWesGardner Thanks much. Actually I use PureRef a bit. Just didn't recognize it. I know it's considered cheating but I wish one could color pick from PureRef references from within Krita.
@ArtOfWesGardner

@@desotopete Totally agree, and whoever told you that color-picking is "cheating" is full of it, LOL!

@@desotopete hey friend I know it's an old comment but Krita has also a reference pic tool, I also love and use pureref, I use them both actually, once you select the tool you can add pics through the tool options panel, or you can actually just click and drag and krita will ask if you want to import the pic as layer, new doc or reference! The reference pics can be placed anywhere in or outside the canvas and, can be rotated flipped etc and don't ocuppy layers and are saved along the Krita file. The plus on the reference tool on is that you can actually pick colors from your reference (no cheating) 😉

Thank you, airwide! So during this, I was using a Huion Kamvas 22 touch-tablet monitor, and my older PC rig. That rig had an Intel i9-4790, 12 gigs of DDR3 RAM, and a GeForce 960. Nowadays i'm still rocking the Huion Kamvas 22, but now my rig is an Intel i5-12600KF, 16 gigs of DDR4 RAM, and a GeForce 3060.

Hey Alan, thanks for the comment! After doing some searching, I think 4.3.0 actually introduced the RGBA brush engine, so I believe the functionality should be there! krita.org/en/krita-4-3-release-notes/
