Showing the belly is a sign of submission for a dog. In wolf packs, betas do it when an alpha approaches them to show they are obedient and do not want to challenge the alpha. The dog thinks of you as it's leader.

@@princehydron3599 Thank you for the information! ☺

The beta and alpha theory has been disproven as it was based upon captive wolves kept in unrealistic and arguably traumatic conditions. These “alphas” you speak of are not competitive, domineering leaders that others submit to; they’re the parents of the pack. The rolling over is their adult pups submitting to them as their leaders because they are the whole pack’s parents. When wolves or dogs submit out of fear, it is not natural nor healthy.
@sudenkieppi3 жыл бұрын
Showing the belly is a sign of submission or trust/affection, I believe. The belly, along with the neck and throat are weak points and don't have much protection to attacks. That's something I heard from my mom, who's had many different dogs throughout her entire life and has read many books about training her dogs. She has also taken part in quite a few dog shows, agility and one of her golden retrievers was once an Obedience Champion. And of course, many dogs love a good belly rub.

@@honkhonk8263 Exactly, umbrella, broom stick, these are all objects people most likely hit her with. If not 100% certain. As well as punches and kicks, which is why she's scared of any human physical contact, even just petting sets it off. So sad :( Special place in hell for her abusers

I remember having to do something like this for my guinea pig cookie after her owners had beaten her so badly she went completely blind at 2 years old. She was fearful and aggressive, and drew blood when she was touched. Instead of putting her down, a vet helped her integrate with our herd and she's been doing a lot better and is really a sweetheart. She even gives me kisses sometimes!

Simply amazing. I am so impressed my that family's resilience in their mission to be able to obtain a better quality of life for a formerly abused dog. I'm a combat veteran who was fortunate enough to explore alternative therapies to cut back on the laundry list of medications that was given to me when I was medically retired from the Marine Corps. I would not be here today if it wasn't for my service dog. Sometimes I feel as if we don't deserve their undying and unconditional love...

You're on point. In fact, because dogs learn to act a certain way when humans reward them with goodies and kindness, she might have perceived the owner petting her after hurting herself as "good girl, now I won't hit you".
@TastyGamingQc5 жыл бұрын
@@Demokaze I feel like her last owner must've "disciplined" her a lot, for no real reason. Which lead to her being scared and anxious about any action she is doing when in presence of a human. Like I said, I'm not against physical discipline BUT it has to be done carefully and NEVER without reasons or out of annoyance. Imo yes rewarding good behaviors is extremly beneficial but I believe that a bad behavior needs to be punished. In nature her mother would growl and bite her to discipline her cubs. I'm not going to do that obviously but I feel a little pain is required to associate the bad behavior to a bad feeling/memory. Although, when I see cases like that I understand why it isn't ever mentionned as an option. Just like humans, a lot of ppl don't understand when to stop or when a spanking becomes abuse.
@Demokaze5 жыл бұрын
@@TastyGamingQc Yeah I don't think that would help here because the previous owner might still be dominant in her head if they left such a trauma. But you're right, some light smacking goes a long way when pets are misbehaving. My cats were clawing the window screens all the time and they understood I wasn't happy about it only when it got physical.

Lisa H I disagree, I think it is more like cutting or otherwise hurting oneself. Causing pain for oneself is a way to cope with anxiety, to ”take control” in a situation, where you have nothing to control. I know, because I have been some serious self harming too and am still on the road to recovery.
