I wonder if theres another way to get the dog to stop. Because when you touch and pet the dog when she does it you reinforce the behavior. My aunt had a dog like that she rescued in the middle east that was abused by people. They apparently treat dogs very poorly there. it had the same problem gashing her sides and spinning. I think her dogs was so bad the dog had to take a form of doggy prosac
@cutieepiee

the owner's stroking is actually reinforcing the behaviour. She's essentially being rewarded with cuddles every time she hurts herself.

That's nice and all, but dogs don't understand that. They understand commands or their name. They obviously understand context though and body language, but not actual language. They recognize words, but not language. Words only hold meaning in certain context. You can say "Mustache" and make the dog think you're talking about food. So, while it's heartwarming and all, a cynic like myself just cringes.

The loudest sound ever recorded was the Krakatoa volcanic eruption in 1883. It was measured at 172 dB 100 kilometers away. For reference, the human eardrum ruptures at 150 dB and the induced pressure difference caused by a shockwave at 180 dB would rupture your lungs. The original comment is obviously a joke, but logarithmic scales are some serious business!

@@Demokaze I feel like her last owner must've "disciplined" her a lot, for no real reason. Which lead to her being scared and anxious about any action she is doing when in presence of a human. Like I said, I'm not against physical discipline BUT it has to be done carefully and NEVER without reasons or out of annoyance. Imo yes rewarding good behaviors is extremly beneficial but I believe that a bad behavior needs to be punished. In nature her mother would growl and bite her to discipline her cubs. I'm not going to do that obviously but I feel a little pain is required to associate the bad behavior to a bad feeling/memory. Although, when I see cases like that I understand why it isn't ever mentionned as an option. Just like humans, a lot of ppl don't understand when to stop or when a spanking becomes abuse.

@@TastyGamingQc Yeah I don't think that would help here because the previous owner might still be dominant in her head if they left such a trauma. But you're right, some light smacking goes a long way when pets are misbehaving. My cats were clawing the window screens all the time and they understood I wasn't happy about it only when it got physical.

I remember having to do something like this for my guinea pig cookie after her owners had beaten her so badly she went completely blind at 2 years old. She was fearful and aggressive, and drew blood when she was touched. Instead of putting her down, a vet helped her integrate with our herd and she's been doing a lot better and is really a sweetheart. She even gives me kisses sometimes!

I have an adopted stray old dog which was abused by its previous owner and was left roadside. Whenever I come close she would show her belly. It looked strange as other of my adopted dogs don't do so. I thought it was an experssion of love and ignored that. Now l understand how wrong I was. Thank you for this video! Showing the belly is a sign of submission for a dog. In wolf packs, betas do it when an alpha approaches them to show they are obedient and do not want to challenge the alpha. The dog thinks of you as it's leader.

The beta and alpha theory has been disproven as it was based upon captive wolves kept in unrealistic and arguably traumatic conditions. These “alphas” you speak of are not competitive, domineering leaders that others submit to; they’re the parents of the pack. The rolling over is their adult pups submitting to them as their leaders because they are the whole pack’s parents. When wolves or dogs submit out of fear, it is not natural nor healthy.
@sudenkieppi

Showing the belly is a sign of submission or trust/affection, I believe. The belly, along with the neck and throat are weak points and don't have much protection to attacks. That's something I heard from my mom, who's had many different dogs throughout her entire life and has read many books about training her dogs. She has also taken part in quite a few dog shows, agility and one of her golden retrievers was once an Obedience Champion. And of course, many dogs love a good belly rub.

It was really interesting for the animal behaviour expert figure out the different reasons/triggers for the biting behaviour but even hella more impressive in the tactics used to fix the behaviours! And quickly. The oils, wrap and smell association with objects that scared her were brilliant! I will file them away for later use if ever needed. (fingers crossed I never have to use them)

Lisa H I disagree, I think it is more like cutting or otherwise hurting oneself. Causing pain for oneself is a way to cope with anxiety, to ”take control” in a situation, where you have nothing to control. I know, because I have been some serious self harming too and am still on the road to recovery.

I have OCD caused by PTSD too. Knowing that animals who are mostly defenceless against humans are being harmed and hurt by some humans and even develop severe OCD from the PTSD makes me very sad. Btw @Anime foxy OCD stands for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. In Yiwol’s case, the obsession is that there is this intrusive thought that a person rubbing her tummy or holding an item is going to abuse her and the compulsion she performs is biting her hind leg (perhaps to try to scare or avoid the abuser) instead of biting the person in supposed defence
