The title was an early attempt at a sentence with every letter of the English alphabet. Once it was discovered to be missing several letters, it was thrown out in favour of "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog," and the wandering dragon, unable to find work, was forced to move to Beijing and become the title of an opera.

This is indeed a classic show. As a Chinese I also recommend you (霸王别姬)Farewell to My Concubine, dingjun(定军山), Borrow the east wind(借东风), Mu Guiying breaks the Tianmen array(穆桂英大破天门阵)andThe imperial concubine was drunk(贵妃醉酒).I'm glad you'll love Peking Opera, and if you're interested in the plot, characters, lines, or more, you can always ask me and I'll be happy to answer them.

This is beautiful! I just wish the English subtitles were yellow instead of white. The words blend into their robes sometimes and its hard to read. :(
@enderged36955 жыл бұрын
Now this is just racist. To not accept white subtitles on Beijing opera and to want them yellow instead.

krokodiligrai : Poetic? Does a title needs to be poetic?
@krokodiligrai5 жыл бұрын
The Chinese original is mildly poetic. Why should an English translation be pedestrian and banal? But nobody is stopping you from making your own translation.

I grew up in western culture too, but I think I understand the quality behind this because I watched a lot of Benny Hill and a lot of circus clowns. I am not saying this as a joke like "haha look at these clowns" I mean it looks like Chinese opera is a kind of performance art similar to clowns and mimes of Europe.
@muyeyang84189 жыл бұрын
Actually Chinese Opera is not like clowns and mimes at all! Chinese Opera focus on telling the stories, containing political, love and history aspects.

Chinese Beijing Opera is more like poem, and it takes so long to regulate all actions on stage to the particular meanings. Rather say, there's no move and even eye rolling without mandatory.

Is the female role played by a man or woman?
@jhzh23126 жыл бұрын
woman.
@johanngsenger67796 жыл бұрын
female roles are always perforned by men, women are not allowed in Chinese Opera
@jhzh23126 жыл бұрын
Old time, yes. No women allowed. But this is just years ago, things are totally different. Very few man playing woman character now.
@bubbleffs6 жыл бұрын
Women have been allowed in chinese opera ever since some 1930s. Basically since fall of Qing, but it took time before theatres and schools managed to train the first generation of actresses. Mei Lanfang himself trained actresses, too.
