Thats great that you are turning him loose on the big stuff. I remember the first time I was allowed to try my young self out on a tractor and baler. For a young pup it really makes your day to be given that chance. The biggest one though was the day I was allowed to operate the combine.

What I'm getting is that you are a good manager with a long term vision. You gotta have people familar with the equipment ready to step in and relieve you on short notice. The farm will keep moving with or without you , and that, is a good thing. I can see where you're going.

It's always best to take your time when your learning, and yes STOP!!! the machine before you get close to it. I've known several individuals who lost their lives by not shutting off the machine.

it's nice to have such good kids ,, I've noticed that farm kids seem to be some of the most responsible , hard working and trustworthy kids there are ,, granted i grew up on a farm so i know what the work is like ,,never ending hard work ,, right now i am teaching my sister's 13yr old how to run the tractor ,, I'm trying to get him to be less distracted ,,he got mad at me yesterday because i made him drive the 4020 around in figure 8s for almost 2 hours in an attempt to teach him how to turn using the brakes

your right about farm kids my cousin was a teacher at a vo-tech school and when people came looking to hire they would grab up the farm kids because they knew they would work hard weren't afraid of early hours and just overall had a better work ethic

Named Japanese beetle because at one point it was only native to Japan. Got imported (inadvertently of course) to the US on a ship in NJ of all places back in the late 19th century.

Jap beatles lay eggs, when they hatch their larvae are grubs, like u hear about in lawns. We use products like Merit( imidaclopirid) and others to put on this time of year to kill the grubs as soon as they hatch. Not sure of per acre cost for that kind of insecticide for Ag use but might be something u check into. I'd be interested in what u find out

I remember as a child my family had little bags that acted as traps for those suckers. Great for lawns and gardens. Probably not gonna cut it for a field. Is there any local wildlife you can get to eat them? Importing a species would become a nightmare, but promoting a specific kind of animal that's already local should be no problem.

Wes, down here in GA we have army worms and cabbage loppers that get in our Bermudag grass. They show up like clockwork after the full moon in July and stay with us until frost. I finished baling my first cut and have our big sprayer on our big tractor and it will probably stay on it until we cut hay. Only cutting twice this year, because we still have lots of last years hay. Back to the army worms, there are lots of products to use, Lannate,mustang maxx, hatchett,nudrin. And now we have a new pest, called the bermudagrass stem maggot. This pest bores into the stem, which stunts the growth and causes a burned appearance to the grass. People have no idea what farming involves, they think its simple, I guess that's why they have plenty of time to go shut down interstates and bitch and whine about .........don't get me started.

putting weight on the front does not take any weight off the back.. it just puts weight on the front for traction.

I've always been told on these (more on the 30 & R series) that due to the design(up & away bracket) that weight needed to be added on both ends otherwise it takes weight off the back.

+Sid 15 Very rarely a tractor is not pulling something, holding something on the arms so realistically the weights help all the times. Especially baling more so with a fusion baler though when the transfer takes place, or when pulling heavy loads like silage.

They are horrible here, they love grape vines. At peak times I can get inch of them in 5 bags every few hours. The bass and bluegill love them but they are a real pain.

"I don't know why they call them Japanese beetles... they don't look Japanese" Wes, what do Japanese looking beetles look like? ; ) I'm sure the Japanese people did not call them "Japanese beetles" but that was the name given to them when they came here from Japan sometime around a hundred years ago. They don't cause much damage to Japanese crops because the beetles have natural predators that keep their numbers down.
