Diesbuster's ending was so mindblowing it left my jaw on the floor for like 5 minutes. And the funny thing is, I also didn't pick up on "Nono Riri" just being Noriko, and Diebuster being 12000 years later made me think it was a continuation at first, but it looked so different I wrote it off as a different universe too, or like some sort of retelling. But even then, the moment I saw those 2 red lights in the sky right after Lal'C said "they" had returned; It just clicked. I was caught me off guard so much. It's probably one of the best anime endings I've ever seen to be frank. I didn't think Diebuster was as good as Gunbuster, but that finale was more than worth it.

Hello there. I'm glad that you made it to university and I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors. Now, for the OVAs... I personally think that Gunbuster is nothing less of a classic, maybe a masterpiece but let's stick to classic for now. I have a very soft spot for this series (Gunbuster) and that's due to multiple reasons: The OVA was Hideaki Anno's directorial debut and it was such a strong debut in my eyes, I adore the man and his work! It was also Gainax's first series and my feelings towards the studio are very similar to those that I have towards Anno. These guys were nothing but fans of what they loved, they adored their craft and wanted to step into this industry and made whatever they wanted with an X because it sounds cool. I can also never forget the (semi) beginning of the Gainax soul as well as the Gainax pose (I know that it's an homage to Getter Robo but it has become a very powerful symbol of its own) These reasons may not be compelling enough to justify my love for it, but to sum it up Gunbuster is everything I ever wanted from an Anime series and it delivered. I also had a lot of amazing memories watching it at the time I did and I shall cherish them forever. Now for diebuster. I had heard that the original show ha gotten a sequel and I was very hesitant about watching it because sequels are hit or miss. I ended up liking it more than I initially thought I would but preffered it's predecessor in the end. Still, Diebuster is nothing to scoff at. It has problems here and there (so does Gunbuster) but it eventually finds its way through and manages to stand on its own two feet in the end. The animation was truly incredible, even the cgi parts were good. I also like how it's made by totally different people who brought in their own ideas into the buster universe its an obvious sign of love and passion towards a project and also respect they have to it's legacy... And the ending was simply splendide. When I relaized what was happening I literally lost it and was almost about to cry. I'm glad that I watch them and that I experienced it the way I did, thank you Gainax. I remember reading a comment which said "If Gunbuster is proto Evangelion then Diebuster is proto Gurren Lagann" and I couldn't agree more. Just something I thought I'd bring up. The closest thing I could remember to having an experience similar to what you discussed it would probably be with the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and it's movie the Dissappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya. Might be irrelevant to you but do you ever plan of reviewing/ discussing Gainax's first film Royal Spaceforce: The Wings of Honnêamise? Anyway that's all I have to say. I'm glad that you're settled in your dorm. The video making quality has not decreased one bit and again good luck with the future. Till next time.

Love hearing you talk about shows you like as always. I'm actually currently watching Haruhi S2 and I plan to watch Disappearance so I'll keep in mind what you said about it. Also, I'd never heard of Royal Spaceforce but I'll check it out and if it seems interesting, I'll certainly give it a try.

3:45 - ooh, you probably also missed that the whole "Topless" thing was a reference to the slogan from 'Gunbuster', "Aim for the top!", which in turn was part of that show's homage/parody of the '70s anime series 'Aim for the Ace!' (a tennis-themed show, of all things, which is why the mechas in that series are exercising in the first episode, while the girls are being trained by a mysterious coach!) That is, the Topless are not just aiming for the top, there is no top for them - or, they aren't aiming for the top when they should be, depending on how you look at it! The flashback to NoNo awakening when freed from the comet in Episode 4 (iirc) has her saying Noriko's name more more completely, and that's where NoNo's name came from, because her "father" thought she was telling him her name ("No...Nori... Ri...Ko!") There's a few other clues to the connection between 'Gunbuster' and 'Diebuster', but I can sympathize with anyone who missed the hints: they're subtle and I had the benefit of going into the shows knowing they were related and that Noriko's name was important ahead of time, and of watching the shows for the first time back-to-back over the course of two days so that it was easier to notice how they were related, while also knowing that a different director and anime team handled the newer series with original show's director Hideko Anno's blessing... normally, I have a dreadful time remembering names as well, and especially foreign names, so I could have easily been in the same boat! 'Aim for the Ace!' isn't required viewing, and I have a feeling that watching several years worth of original series is probably a bit much for anyone who isn't a fan of both tennis and old anime, but if you feel adventurous enough, you might have a little fun checking out the 1979 movie version of 'Aim for the Ace!' It's about a teen girl who joins her girl's school's highly competitive tennis team with her clumsy friend, and idolizes the team's champion, while suffering from insecurity and bullying from the other girls on the team and an aggressively jealous rival, as a mysterious coach with a fatal illness takes over training the team, choosing the protagonist for greatness against all expectations. Not only did 'Gunbuster' director Hideko Anno pay homage to this show by referring to the title and parodying plot elements of the story in 'Gunbuster', but fans of Anno's masterwork 'Neon Genesis Evangelion' will also notice that NGE borrows some storytelling tricks from it as well as those similarities that carry over from 'Gunbuster' to NGE! ('Aim for the Ace!' even has a sort of prototype for the otherwise bizarre and inexplicable Pen-Pen, in the form of the protagonist's pet kitten who provides silent anthropomorphic comic relief in the background of her scenes at home!) Hiromi Oko is virtually a 1970s Shinji Ikari, given a superficial gender-swap to a boy, with the pressure of his call to greatness and accompanying angst dialed up to 11, and for me it's also kind of fun to see the sorts of Big Mecha-Kaiju fight scenes I'm familiar with from 'Evangelion' and 'Gunbuster', animated in the bizarre prototypical form of tennis matches instead, and wondering how Hideko Anno ever watched this anime and thought to himself "Imagine if they were fighting robots, instead!" That's a visionary for you, I guess!

Hi Kross, I just came across your HIMYM and Friends comparison video and I had to say that it is just pure gold and you said a lot of things that I wanted to say for years. I don't know how to reach you so I figure just leaving a comment in your latest video might work. Anyway, I don't know if you have already watched/read One Piece but I just really wanted to recommend you the series. I have read/watched books and adaptations of many fantasies including game of thrones, the lord of the rings, harry potter, Avatar the last Airbender, Dragonball, Marvel films, and etc, and IMHO nothing comes even close to the story of One Piece, the character development (not just the main character, numerous side characters also), the overwhelming plot, the setups, the foreshadowing (oh the foreshadowings of this show usually expand over 10 years), the amazing world-building, is just out of this world. If you have not read/watched the series I highly recommend it! and I would love to see your thoughts on it.

I still remember when I saw it, more than 15 years ago or so. When you see LalC sitting in the field think about Lala, I thought it was a simple epilogue. She then says that the person Lala admired the most came home that night....was watching Buster Machines 1 and 2 and started crying.

Interesting, there are A LOT of complicated things to understand about the Buster's series but thankfully I was able to fully enjoy that one 🙂 The NoNo thing was tricky though, because at points I really did think it could be a mention to Noriko but Diebuster is sooo out of whack I honestly just begin to think it was more of a spiritual sequel than a proper one (even though I did knew it was the exact same universe), and when the Princess character (forgot her name, how fitting) responds to someone saying "she was a girl that saved Earth a long time ago" I was like "Aha! that's the mention to Noriko we all been waiting for", but that fully blindsides you for that gut punch of an ending! tnks for the vid, it made me feel very good to have experienced that (don't beat yourself up though, there's always the next great anime)

I can totally relate. For some reason, with certain series, my brain is an idiot and I can’t seem to put things together. I had a similar experience with From the New World (Shinsekai Yori). After I finished it, I just straight up had no clue what it was even about. I don’t even know if I liked it. I might as well have not even seen it. Every time I thought I understood what the story was trying to say, something would happen that would throw all my interpretations into question. It’s probably not even that hard to understand, it was just on a frequency completely opposite to that of my brain.

Gunbuster is great. Amazing art, emotional impacts, recommend it to anyone. I felt Diebuster was a mid anime with somehow more gratuitous fanservice, an FLCL version of Gunbuster. FLCL is also great but I didn’t need an FLCL version of Gunbuster.

You remind me of a friend of mine I try to watch stuff with. He also ends up with these labouriously overthought yet incredibly idiotic opinions. I can only guess, because of his un-diagnosed alpha-level adhd, he only spends 10% of the time paying attention to anything and 90% ignoring the rest while ruminating on that remaining 10%. So when I try to explain why everything he thinks is fucking stupid he just gets lost because he completely missed all the crucial plot points and can't even remember the characters I'm talking about.

Here is lesser known lore between gunbuster and diebuster, like in 2048-2100: Next Generation Light Novel begins here Buster Machine 3 is built. Debate over whether or not to leave the earth begins. Gunbuster Episode 6. The half that want to leave earth do so, and colonize Sirius. Remnants of an alien civilization discovered. The 'Sirius Alliance' is formed and wants freedom from the overall Human Empire. Thanks to the ancient aliens they discovered Energy of the Spiri Sirius Alliance figures out how to weaponize it. They no longer need computers Earth refuses independence as they ran out of resources in the war with the Space Monsters, plans 'violent crackdown'. Earth starts with a tech and numbers advantage, but has no industrial capacity anymore. Presumably, they build Nono here, as the last weapon created on earth with pre-Sirius War tech. Sirius War begins. 2100-2480 Earth is losing war; both sides have undergone a massive tech slide. Jung Freud and the Eltrium Fleet come back the earth Empire tries to order them order them around but they overthrow the Earth Empire and establish a federation. Jung is elected president of Earth shes a called the hero of all humanity. clones of Kazumi Amano, Noriko Takaya, drive the sizzler against Sirius Alliance Ceasefire is called. Accepted. Mission to retrieve the Gunbuster is launched. Fails as humanity can no longer understand the pre-war tech to do so. Jung enters cryo sleep, a mass scramble to recover pre-war tech begins, s War restarts. 2480-14292 Sirius War has stalemated. Earth discovers an old Super-Excelion. Produces Two 'Werutoriumu' class ships based on it. Next Generation Manga begins here. The 'Great Attractor', a being claiming to be God, attacks the Sirius System. Begins drawing in all of the particles in the universe towards it. Jung reawakened, leads fleet consisting of the two Werutoriumus, and Buster Machines 4 and 5, built with pre-war tech, to fight it. Buster Machine 7 is not noted, as she wasn't thought up here. 6 doesn't show up for similar reasons. No one knows because manga and the light novels were canceled. Warp Tech sealed away at some point here Then Diebuster happens

@alchemistofsteel8099 that's not the issues I have personally. The art style is actually one of the better parts of the show, Sadamato did the designs and they're very memorable, and Gunbuster was full of fanservice already. Really, my issue is that majority of the characters kind of suck.
