Kruger Lions Kill Hippo (not for sensitive viewers)

Күн бұрын

We came across this sighting with Outlook Safaris in the Kruger Park, of lions killing a hippo and a calf. Unfortunately during times of drought there is a lot of pressure on nature. In this instance the hippo cow and her calf were likely forced to move when the water they called home dried up. The cow seemed tired and had likely spent quite a lot of time covering a big distance to locate an alternative water source. Although hippos are formidable and dangerous, not having water to flee into when there is danger does leave them vulnerable.
Feel free to visit www.krugerwildlifesafaris.com if visiting the Kruger National Park is something you would like to experience.

Seems like this hippo was hurt or incapacitated beforehand somehow. It put up absolutely zero fight, which is NOT what I would expect from an angry, aggressive animal like the hippo.

Stoolie33 If you ask me the poor thing malnourished. Normally a well hydrated or Hippo at full strength is more than capable of dishing out a hell of a lot of pain. By the way this one was moving I'm guessing she must've been taking the young one out to find some food but hadn't had much herself.

To summarise ... 1) That hippo was going to die anyway. It was weak - whether from injury, disease, malnourishment, or old age I can't tell, but it was weak. So saving it from the lions would only have delayed the inevitable by what appears to be hours. Days at the very best. 2) That calf was also going to die anyway. Hippos don't adopt other young, so once the mother was gone (whether killed by lions or whatever caused it to accept death without a fight), it wasn't going to be able to fend for itself anymore either. 3) Those lions were starving. Usually lions don't take on hippos, since hippos are among the most dangerous animals you can face on this earth. Hippos are insanely strong and very aggressive and usually very easily able to fend off an entire pride of lions. So if the people on this safari had intervened, the following would have happened: The hippo and its calf would have died shortly after anyway (unless someone treated them, which I am pretty sure noone was able or willing to (since hippos are insanely dangerous as I described above)). The lions would have either killed and eaten another animal (like a gazelle or something) or simply starved to death as well. No act of cruelty was commited in the making of this video. Those starving lions weren't cruel for feeding on a dying hippo. Those people on the safari weren't cruel for not intervening in the way the world has worked for thousands and millions of years. Had the people on this safari tried to intervene in a humane way, they would have had to feed and treat the hippos (lest the entire effort of 'saving' them in the first place be wasted) as well as the lions (since denying them their prey and sending them off to starve actually IS an act of cruelty, just as much as it would be to keep the hippos from eating). But here's the thing: Lions are carnivores. So in order for them to live, something has to die. Had it not been the hippo, then something else instead - either another wild animal, or an animal raised by humans to be eaten. This is the way nature works.

I think you've hit on the only answer that makes sense. Hippos don't continue to stand around being eaten. This too was a momma hippo who would protect her young at any cost. If she wasn't compromised to a high degree.. she would be spinning around with an open mouth trying to rid herself of carnivorous beasts eating her alive. She had to be sick or highly dehydrated.. good call

+cain31525 it depends of your morality tenets. there is people who believe in leaving nature to take its course there is other people who dont. i personally would round up all predators, enclose them in special habitat and feed them specially prepared mixtures. diseases are natural and we fight them, i think nature should be reengineered and probably that could be a challenge humanity is given in this existence. empathy towards others is a hallmark of a civilized society. it simply comes to the question if you care to help others in danger or not.

+Arie Fraiser I've seen hippos killed by lions (long and grueling), natives with primitive weapons (long and grueling) and foreign hunters with rifles (quick and clean). Ideally, natives would sell permits to foreign or other wealthy hunters, charge them lodging and guiding fees and have him leave the meat and tens of thousands of dollars for them, the residue for the scavengers and take home an experience, pictures and maybe a trophy. While getting rid of a dangerous animal that competes with people for resources. But if you hate people that's OK. You could make the world a better place in your opinion by eliminating yourself.

"Oh my God stupid humans, help the poor hippo!" The lot of you need to stop treating a wild hippopotamus better than you treat your neighbor, a stranger, your kids, your family, and your friends. It may be hard to believe, but this is something called nature, not downtown Chicago.
@AlexDraco
@AlexDraco 10 жыл бұрын
Agreed. And yeah, i know, right? Isn't it just odd that some people are shocked by that stuff, yet find it perfectly normal to consume meat for dinner themselves? If they're that much butthurt to see an animal being hunted by another one, then mayhaps they should : 1/ not watch the video at all. 2/ consider the fact that the chicken leg they're about to eat came from a living animal before finding its way to their plate... 3/ Ah, but wait! They did not see the chicken die, alright! So i guess that eases their conscience in a way... XD
@ToastyPillowsack
@ToastyPillowsack 10 жыл бұрын
AlexDraco Exactly. It's all because they apply human aspects to the animals. They treat the hippo as if it were some poor lost little girl being brutally raped by a band of men. Yet, if that ACTUALLY happens to a real human girl, majority of them don't bat an eye. What a fucking hypocritical standard. People need to understand something. If you went to school and got an education, you would know that the ecosystem is a very delicate balance. You can't just remove an entire, massive species of predator, or several of them (lions, hyenas), without consequence. "But we could fix it!" Yeah, maybe if more than a fourth of the population gave a shit, and if there was money to be gained. You would have animals next in line on the food chain with out of control populations. The same thing happens with deer in the United States. A lot of their predators have been killed off by the glorious humans, who now have to take over the job of the predators by sending out specialized teams of hunters to keep the populations in check. If we don't, even *more* deer get hit by cars, endangering ourselves *and* them. They are a pest to farmers at times. So if you also want to take over controlling the populations of zebras, zulu, cape buffalo, and other animals across the planet in Africa (because let's face it, most of the countries there are in... uhh... let's just say dire straits, and can't handle it themselves) be my guest. Or, you can let nature balance itself like it has for billions of years, long before our existence. AND, that last line is proof enough that if you are really keen on balancing nature? Kill off humans, before one idiot launches a single nuclear missile and fucks up the planet. Well, if global warming doesn't get there first.

Sad moment but it 's the nature and we are only guests on this earth... During the hot weather, almost all ponds are dry... That s why those animals are looking for another pond and they know that out of their water pond... There s a high risk of dying... Lions as well have to find food very far away (look how weak they are all)... If they can't find food at that moment (much less food in that dry time), lions will die as well with their babies (they might be already dead)

One lioness got seriously hurt and actually recovered. Lions and other wild animals have remarkable recovery powers as scientists have documented. I really did not expect that lioness to survive because she got her head crunched by the hippo badly. All the other lions left this lioness alone because she was in so much pain and could barely move. But a few days later she was okay. I couldn't believe it. But, when desperate lions will go after hippos that are too far out of the water. Even healthy ones.

Very unusual behavior for both animals. Hippos are usually more aggressive from the second they even spot a potential threat and start to assert dominance through aggressive charges and the large yawn of their jaw. But this hippo didn’t even fully open its mouth once? Lions also usually wait for their prey to die before starting to eat it but i guess they were really hungry here 😢

Less weird than those humans who eat meat every day without ever killing a single animal.

Isn't it weird how people like you attach human qualities such as "cruelty" to animals living in nature doing what they have done since the beginning of time? Don't tell me you are a vegan too. Plants have lives you know.

YoungerBrother Wakeup I've killed a few animals, when I was around 11 years-old. I found out at a young age that turtle shells don't come off without blood being spilled. Also, cats scream when the are getting shaken to death by a dog. And I use to watch my grandma be head a chicken when we needed to eat and there wasn't much in the fridge. So now it should be alright for me to eat meat, right?

YoungerBrother Wakeup You were talking about people that eat meat and have never killed and animal before. So I said that I have killed animals before so that should entitle me to eat meat. Quote "Less weird than those humans who eat meat every day without ever killing a single animal."UN-Quote Therefore, if someone ever has killed an animal before then they should be able to eat meat, right? Because if you haven't, then you don't have the right to eat meat. It sounds like to me that's what you meant.

yeah help the hippo and let the lions starve lol. I guess lions dont deserve to eat since it costs a life. Too bad they have to risk their lives every time they eat, unlike herbavores. Plus you dont need energy to chase down grass.

Kill Joy lmao the only active hunters that dont have trouble are birds. which is why they dont stick around in groups, seeing as their hunting ability is incredibly effective. Compare that to animals that are required to apply perfect timing and teamwork just at the CHANCE of a meal. Every time they fail they have less energy to try again, let alone being injured from the animal or the terrain. Basically you can apply the arguement to both animals, but i never said you couldnt. People just have zero sympathy for carnivores because something has to die. People just underestimate the power of most animals that require a pack to take down. Animals such as lions die against large prey all the time, and if its not large, they have to spend all day cchasing down smaller things. Life is a gamble in the wild, but even the apex predators dont have it easy, they could even spend the time getting a kill only to have it stolen.

Why didn't the hippo try to fight back or at least try to run? That's odd, never seen an animal just sit there and be fine while being eaten alive, especially with its baby near by, almost seems like it didn't know what was happening........🤔

Dont know if the lions made that wound on the back but either way that hippo was screwed. there is no way a gash like that could heal in the shit infested ponds and lakes they live in. Hippo probably got an infection and was weakened allowing the lions to finish it off. I wish national geographic had been there to film this, you know damn well they would have HD and upclose footage of nature in action. really makes me wish I had a time machine to witness this sort of shit in the age of the dinosaurs and ice ages

@@aleyv2368 Not really, hippos are very vulnerable to dehydration during drought season especially if their watering hole drys up and they have to find a new one. These two probably couldn’t find a new watering hole and so the mother was easy prey as it was dying of thirst.
