I did that trip twice in my life. Once with my grandmother and once with my son.

I know you'll never forget those memories. The first time I travelled the CZ route was with my dad and brother almost 50 years ago. Thanks for the comment.

This trip -- Cardinal to California Zephyr -- is probably the most beautiful, memorable way to see why America is so magnificent.

krutherford--nice vid. Thanks for all the "lookin' out the window" views....and no background music. Story share--I rode most of the same DC-Cincinnati route in 1975 when it was the James Whitcomb Riley. Train broke down in the middle of cold dark WV for many hours. Love the fact that there even still is a transcontinental train "system"

It was. I hadn't ridden the California Zephyr in 21 years and the beauty of the scenery hit me like the first time. Combine that with my first trip on the Cardinal and it was very memorable. Thanks for watching.

Amazing footage, thanks for sharing! The landscape seen from the train looks absolutely breathtaking, loved the shots where you could actually see the front of the train from the passenger point. Best regards from Poland!

I did something similar this year. I went from HOL (Hollywood, FL) to DC took The Cardinal to CHI, that afternoon got on the Southwest Chief for LAX. Spent the day in LA and that evening got on the Texas Eagle/Sunset Limited to DAL. Spent two nights in Dallas and fly to Miami on a 777.

The sleepers on the Cardinal are ridiculously expensive. it cost more to take a Viewliner from NY all the way to Chicago then it does to have a sleeper from Chicago to Seattle via LA.

Seemed like the best part of the Cardinal was missed here, namely the hours-long stretch along the New River gorge.......was that at night or something? I have only taken the Cardinal going the opposite direction, and the most of the second day was along the New River gorge.

Absolutely beautiful trip. But make no mistake, these two iconic trains are in danger of being discontinued by the present Amtrak administration due to lack of funding. Ridership is not the problem, but funding is being whittled away in favor of airlines, highways, and other White House preferences...FIGHT FOR YOUR TRAINS AMERICA!

Question: does either the Cardinal or the Capitol Ltd carry “through cars” which connect with the CA Zephyr in Chicago?
@krutherfurd5 жыл бұрын
No they do not. In the case of the Cardinal, that train uses single-level equipment with Viewliner sleepers and it would be problematic if not impossible to mix those cars with the bi-level Superliner equipment. A "transition" car would be necessary to allow passage from the single-level car to the bi-level equipment and makes for inflexible and more difficult operation. The Capitol Ltd on the other hand, is a Superliner equipped train and could support such an operation. Some years ago the Southwest Chief equipment ran through Chicago becoming the Capital Ltd and vise versa. I believe if you were ticketed through Chicago in either direction you still had to detrain while in Chicago and were assigned new space on the departing train - I could be wrong about that. In any case, there is no through sleeper that connects with the CA Zephyr from the Capital Ltd. The only through sleeper that I am aware of is carried on the Sunset Ltd and is transferred to the Eagle to/from Chicago at San Antonio 3 days per week.

The Empire Builder also carries a through sleeper and coach for Portland that split at Spokane.

krutherfurd thank you for the info. Of course the Viewliner cars wouldn’t correspond with the Superliners, but I did wonder about the Capitol Ltd since it carries Doubledecker cars. Thanks for your response.
