Fuji 18-55 or Fuji 16-80 - What’s the BEST KIT LENS?

With proper technique, the 16-80 is capable of delivering outstanding results in daylight conditions. It's incredibly sharp when you nail focus, and has very nice bokeh at 80mm f4 with the subject at 2-3 meters and good separation with the background. After using it for 3 years, I would say this lens is technically perfect. Pair it with a fast prime for night-time photography and you are golden.

My deal breaker was its lack of any kind of parfocalness. I geddit, it's not a parfocal lens but neither is the 50-140 but you can do focus pulls with that lens quite easily. For a LM lens I expected much better results with this 16-80, starting at 80mm and having a subject walk towards you whilst pulling focus it is awful, constantly hunting with a extremely poor hit rate. The 50-140 in comparison kills it. Such a shame because this would make it into my bag if it was up to the task. I do understand however my needs are niche and the lens likely not developed for this purpose. It is curious however, if it is LM then what is holding it back from doing this task well? The 18-120 is likely a better lens for me.

Definitely agree with Sergio. It's also fantastic in the studio. I use it a lot for casual photography and professional. And I pair it with the viltrox 27mm and 75mm f1.2, which are also fantastic, btw.

I have both lenses. I use them on the XT-5 and XT-3. I use the 16-80mm in combination with the 70-300mm for travel. And the 18-55mm for street photography and hiking with the 55-200mm. I’m an enthusiastic photographer.

Thanks for the video, good watching. I have experience with both the 18-55 and 16-80 and after much use and evaluation, the 16-80 has become a go-to lens for just about any shooting I do. Part of the reason is that my 18-55 (which I bought new) had an uneven focus from side to side, a problem that is not unheard of for this lens. I eventually gave up on it, and now own three of the 16-80s for use on multiple bodies (X-T20, X-H2, X-T3). It's worth mentioning that I'm currently auditioning the Tamron 18-300 for Fuji and it's a wonder, not to mention a super value.

Great video and pictures, Kirk. Most of my pics are taken within the medium zoom range. I have both of these lenses in the video but prefer the 16-55 2.8. It is heavier and doesn't have IBIS but my XT-5 does and the lens is very sharp. I have an XS-20 and use the 16-80 on that camera often.

The 16-80 paired up with the 70-300 on my X-T5 makes a great combo. Some folks say the 16-80 isn’t quite a good at the 80 end….ok (it looks fine to me as I don’t pixel peep at 400% and obsess over every single pixel), then you can just pop on he 70-300 and use that for the 80mm part.

Beautiful images and solid comparison. I had both and sold the smaller 18-55. The only thing I miss besides the small size is that 2.8. Sometimes a stop is everything, and in low light I used to treat that little lens like an 18 2.8 prime.

Good to see you Kirk. When I first got into digital cameras (after shooting film for over 35 years) I got an X-T2 with the XF18-55 (great lens which I still own), but when I “upgraded” to the X-T4 I got it with the XF16-80 simply for the extended focal range at both ends. Be well and stay safe.

I love them both. I use the 16-80 on my X-Pro2 and don't have any problems with it. In fact, it's superb! There is a new 'kit' lens coming from Fuji though. The XF 16-50 f2.8. Keep an eye out for it soon!

Tony - I put the 16-80 on the X-Pro3 and thought it worked great but I liked using the optical viewfinder so it got in the way. Actually the only lenses that don’t get in the way are the small primes. I decided not to get into the rumors with that one. And it’s not a straight 2.8. It’s a 2.8-4.8 so extremely slow at 50. Good news is that it is weather sealed, ois, and the biggie, internal zoom.

I have both of these and love them …I shoot with an. XT1 and it handles both very well. So I use the16-55 for travel due to the lightness. Whereas the18-80 is better for dedicated shoots or social jobs. Enjoyed your video and your work.

I have 16-80 on XT5 and I typically hike 15-20 miles per week, often on steep terrain. I've never used the 18-55 but the 16-80 is my most used lens due to the versatile FL. I often use it at 16 and occasionally at 80 so I really like the range. When I'm in an area with bigger vistas, I go for the 10-24 for the wider angle. Its nice that they both use the same filter size, I use the Kase magnetic and swap it between them. I do love the Fuji primes but for on the move, quick setups, its hard to beat the 16-80. Its a work horse for me.

I purchased the 18-55 when I got into the Fuji system back in 2014. I really loved the lens for just about everything. Then I got the 16-80 when it became available and it quickly became my go-to lens. I've used them on my X-T2 and X-T4. At one point the 16-55 2.8 appealed to me so I sold the 18-55. I have regretted that decision because the 16-55 is so big and bulky that I rarely use it. I been thinking about getting a used 18-55 again. Great video and comparison.

I also got introduced to Fujifilm and still use an X-T3 with the 18-55mm. I borrowed a 16-80 and loved it for the same reasons you covered but at the end of the day I stuck with the 18-55mm mostly because of the lower weight and the 2.8 aperture at the wide end. To me the 18-55 would be perfect if it was weather resistant like the X-T3. Their both great kit lenses, especially when you see the "kit" lens most other brands offer.

Great topic Kirk! I have both lenses having originally bought the 18-55 as a kit lens on my X-T1. I sold the X-T1 but kept the lens. I'm now using the X-T5 and use the 16-80 more often. In fact, the 16-80 is my travel lens when I'm forced to choose just one. That said, I still like the 18-55 and use it on occasion.

@@vaynovak For me it's a couple of things: 1. I like the ability to shoot a bit wider (16mm vs. 18mm). Good for landscape shooting and also street. I also like the ability to shoot a bit further (55mm vs. 80mm). 2. I like the fact that the lens is weather resistant so I don't have to think twice about putting it on my X-T3 or T5 in bad weather (I tested it and it works). In summary, I guess you could say it's just a bit more versatile than the 18-55.

I had the 18-55 since 2015, then with X-T1. Several years later, I had X-T3, with 18-55. Superb combination, but GAS struck eventually, and I traded it for the 16-80. I had that lens for over a year, but never liked it. Far too harsh and contrasty for me. Not as nice as the 18-55. So I swopped back to the 18-55, and was very happy. For a while! Some time later, I got to thinking that perhaps I could have set up my camera better (differently). So I took advantage of Fujifilm UK free loan service, and borrowed a 16-80 for a few days. This enabled me to play about with my camera settings, which helped me produce images to my liking, and in many ways superior to any I could have obtained with the 18-55. Needless to say, I have sold the 18-55, and bought my own 16-80. Yes, it is a bit larger and heavier, but at closest I get bigger images, they are a tad sharper, the OIS is quicker, it has a real aperture ring, it is Weather Resistant, and has a greater range of focal lengths. What is not to like?

I own the XT-3 and X -T100 Fujifilm cameras, whenever I use the 18-55 lens 2.8-4 the images come out clean and sharp as you mentioned with any of the two cameras from Fujifilm. It is a pleasure to use the small lens for a walk around and for professional use. Now I would love to get the 16-80 one of these days I sometimes use the 18-135 variable aperture lens and it is okay but at some of the extension less sharp.

When I bought my X-S10 3yrs ago having returned to serious photography after a break of 20yrs I deliberated between the 18-55mm and 16-80mm. At the time the 18-55mm seem to get the better reviews but I decided I preferred the longer range of the 16-80mm albeit it was slightly larger in size. I have never regretted my decision and find it a very versatile travel lens and as you say sharp as a tack. I have recently added the 70-300mm which really complements the 16-80mm.I appreciate your down to earth lens comparison (especially as it confirms my thinking)

I swirched from Canon ASP-C to Fuji in the last year because I do most of my photography when I travel and wanted the smallest and lightest kit possible. I bought the 16-80 with the XT-5 to replace my Canon 15-85, which is a stellar lens, sharp corner to corner, but consderably bigger and heavier than the Fuji lens. After taking the 16-80 on a landscape shoot in the UK and to Lisbon for mostly street and architecture, if found that the 16-80 was fine for landscapes, but for city, where the photos included lots of well-defined edges and architectural details, it was often disappointing as many of the images shot at the wide end (16 -25 mm) were notcieably soft from the left and right edges and continuing about 20% of the way into frame. The problem could be masked to some extent with some extra sharpening and contrast in these areas, but not always. After my experience with the Canon 15-85, I have to say that Fuji's equivalent is quite inferior. The question is how nuch image quality am I prepared to sacrifice for portability. Jury's still out.

I have not had that problem at all with the 16-80 but I appreciate your experience with it. Other people including friends of mine have had bad luck with it. My copy must be better than most as at 16 it is outstanding because I shoot wide open a lot. At 80 it’s a little soft at the corners but in the center it’s very sharp. @@KirkWilliamsonphotography Yes, there seems to be QC issue. My results are like those reported by DP reviews. You seem to have lucked out with an exception. I saw your earlier review and some others before buying it and hoped for the best. Not sure what I can do at this point if I want to stay with Fuji and don't want to deal with "the brick" or a bag of primes, which would defeat my reason for switching. Curiously, I find my copy lens is acceptable near 80, but I shoot very few photos at the long end so don't worry too much anyway. However, i shoot a lot near the wide end. Hence my conundrum.

I have the 16-80. I bought this lens because it gives me the same coverage as the 24-120 that I used on my full frame Nikon. That 24-120 was also an F/4 lens. So the 16-80 gave me the performance that I was already used to. I never have liked non-weather sealed lenses. I absolutely love this lens. It's used on my X-T3 and X-T5. It is the lens that I use for 90-95 percent of my images.

I only own the 18-55mm lens. I’ve never had the 16-80mm in my hands. For me, I don’t have a burning desire for the new kit lens. The 18-55mm lens quickly goes from f2.8 to 4.0 so I consider it a f4.0 lens. It comes down to cost. I don’t want to spend an additional $200 for the extra reach and weather sealing. Martin - My only real problem with the 18-55 was it is not wide enough for me. When I’m working for the paper I like having that 24 equivalent. Also at the other end a 120 equivalent much better as an all around lens.

@@KirkWilliamsonphotography exactly my reasons originally with the X T120 and now the X T5. Paired with the 70-300 with additionally, the Viltrox 27mm f 1.2 which is now my jump from the bag lens. Likely if I was still working as a wedding pro I would use the 16-80 mm but at receptions etc. the Viltrox would be ideal and working at 7-8 feet from subjects it would be perfect much like using the 60 mm on the Hassy.

Great video! Photography is my [expensive] hobby. I was undecided when I bought my X-T4, cause I wanted the 18-55mm but not having weather sealing made me choose the 16-80mm. I like it, but the size and weight usually make me choose to leave home with other lighter lenses. Now with the release of the 16-50mm, I am thinking of getting it cause of internal zoom and about same size as 18-55m. I'd like suggestions/recommendations on what to do. Sell the 16-80mm for the 16-50mm? Or sell it and go for the 18-55mm and not worry about water damage from rain? Or other light third party lenses with weather sealing?

Oh boy, I own both but use the 16-80 on my X-T30 exclusively. I found the 18-55 limited me in terms of reach. Going to 16 mm on the wide side of the range has been good photographing architecture (without any objectionable distortion) and the 80 mm reach on the telephoto end is also quite helpful. If you need one lens where different focal lengths are needed, it’s hard to beat the 16-80.

I bought the 18-55 because when I got into Fujifilm, that was the only option other than the larger, heavier and more expensive 16-55 f/2.8. I'm a prime lens snob, but after several outings with the 18-55, it was hard to justify carrying a cadre of the f/2 primes within the range of the zoom... the image quality from that so called kit lens was terrific within the constraints of the aperture range. I always keep one Fujicron with me for the option of a smaller, faster lens, but the zoom can do a lot on good light with no compromise in image quality. My only complaint is the unmarked aperture ring, which is counter to my love of the old-school ergonomics that made me pick Fujifilm cameras. More than once, my set aperture drifted from what I set it to from simply carrying the camera, and until I brought it to my eye, I didn't know. I shoot aperture priority mostly so the unmarked aperture ring is not optimal. When the 16-80mm was announced, I was excited until many initial reviews mentioned the long end of the zoom not being as sharp as it could be. If it was one review, I could ignore it, but that observation was made by multiple reviewers. I figured that I'd just keep using my 18-55 and I added the 55-200 to it for a comprehensive zoom kit.

Albert - the 18-55 is a great little lens and is so much better than other kit lenses. I agree about the aperture ring. I must have an outstanding copy of the 16-80 because it is sharp all the way around until you get to 80 when the corners get a little soft.

I don't care so much of 2.8-4 apperture since I am not much of a studio shooter where a fixed apperture is more desirable .

I use both with an X-T5, but I tend to use the 18-55 more often due to the size and weight. I mostly shoot street, family, and travel. And I have also started doing KZbin videos, which I find is better with the 18-55. For my use cases the 18-55 fits better. I use the 16-80 when I want something specific, like when I know I want to shoot wide or long outdoors in the daytime, or I plan to shoot in bad weather. I’d say 90% of the time, I pick up the 18-55 to take with me. Both are good lenses though, so just depends on how you plan to use them.

George I tend to agree that the 18-55 is a great gab and go lens. And its size is a big plus. The 16-80 is much larger and a bit heavier but for me the added width on the short end and length on the long end are a big plus for what I do.

I was trying to decide between a used 18-55 or 16-80. I already had the 18-135 so opted for the 18-55 because the 18-135 covered everything the 16-80 had and they were actually very similar in weight. I wondered if I’d ever take the 16-80 out if I could take the 18-135 and have more reach. I went for the 18-55 in the end as it suits the x-t4 and x-t30 well but a part of me still likes the 16-80!!

Some not so good, some good. 55 wasn’t enough reach sometimes but I got the 18-135 as a used model and the camera shop I use were willing to take it back if I wasn’t happy, I’d did have some doubts but overall I was happy with the results on my last holiday. If I didn’t have that I’d have been tempted by the 16-80 as I really liked it when I tried it but it really didn’t make sense when I had it covered plus more. Was a lovely lens but I just knew I would’ve got the use from both and the 18-55. If I hadn’t wanted a lightweight, small lens I’d have chosen the 16-80 over the 18-55 but the point of that was size and weight, particularly on the x-t30. If you get a good version the 18-135 is a great lens to take out for the day. I was wanting to be able to zoom in to detail on Greek/roman ruins etc as well as wide so it was useful. I’ll be looking at which focal lengths I use most on a more regular basis after watching your prime lens video. It’s interesting to look back and see what’s used most often.

I really like the 16-80mm focal length.( 24-120 full frame equivalent) You can cover a lot of subject matter with this lens ie., portraits, candids events, landscapes, etc. I have been “tempted” by the 16-55mm f2.8 but I decided on the 16-80 with OIS as my XT3 does not have in body stabilisation. As of Oct.2024, used prices on the 16-55mm f2.8 should drop as the “new” smaller & lighter version of the 16-55mm is being released in late Nov. 2024 by Fujifilm.

I would get the 16-50. It’s a nice lens with internal zoom and would be great for travel. You might want a longer zoom like the 55-200 or 70-300.

Since I bought the 16-80 I use the 10-24 much less and less. I think the 16-80 while beeing heavier and bigger is a good choise as long as the camera body is big enough. On my x-t30ii I use a L-braket to use it more comfortable.

A few years ago one of my photographers said that he sold his Nikon 16-35. When I quizzed him about it he said that he never used it since getting the 24-70. I thought about it and came to the same conclusion. How many times do you really need that 16-21 FF range. I rarely use my Fuji 10-24 anymore. It mostly gets used for video. So you have a very good point!

@@KirkWilliamsonphotography traded 3 lenses including a 10-24 which in the time I had it was used for a total of 4 images and would never have been purchased had the 16-80 been available. If I was still travelling, I would have kept the 18-135 as a preferred lens. Now if only there was a 16-135mm. I have the 70-300 but at full extension better put it on a tripod as I certainly can't hold that long a focal length hand held.

To be honest they are about the same. I use my 16-80 all the time and the 18-55 is up for sale. The range of the 16-80 is why I use it. 24-120 ff.

The video monster is the XH2s. It will out perform the XS20 in low light. Use fast glass with the XS20 to do better.

I have just re-kindled my love affair with Fuji - after a year .. have owned XT1/2 / Xpro 1 / XH-1 and a variety of lenses - some Fuji some vintage -- long story short I sold everything Fuji and took a break from photography -- anyway I have just purchased an as new XH1 and I went with 16-80 as it covers most of what I need at I like F4 constant.. I am tempted to invest in one Prime lens - and its a toss between 23 and 35 and Voightlander seems interesting - but I also love Fuji 23 / 35.. and the AF makes life a little easier - Greetings from Ireland, Paul

Hi Paul, yes the Voigtlander lenses are interesting but they can be tricky to focus. The Fuji lenses are outstanding both old and new. I own the old 23 f1.4 and the 23 f2, 35 f2 love them all.

I got the 18-55 as a kit lense for my XS20. It’s superb and everything- but it didn’t deliver the magic I was used to have with my old canon DSLR and the prime lenses I was used to. It’s hard to criticize a sharp and “perfect” lense this good. However, it’s missing a 80-100ish fokal length or the aperture is not open enough in the 50mm range. It doesn’t stand out where it counts. I found the setup of this lens a huge disadvantage. I needed to invest in other lenses to fall in love with the Fuji system. I wouldn’t recommend this lens as a first or only lens.

Went to test the 16-80 yesterday at the camera store. What really holds it back (for me) is it's terrible lack of resembling any kind of parfocalness. Nudge the zoom ring and the it needs to reaquire focus. Unlike the 50-140 which is excellent in this regard. A real shame because f4 and 16-80 is a super useful length and acceptable aperture for a lens this size and weight, and being LM I expected much better. If not zooming the lens is fast and snappy, but introduce a bit of zooming and it is trash. Missed opportunity by Fuji.

Eddy - I don’t use the 16-80 for video so zooming and focusing at the same time is not something I care about unless it’s sports. That’s where the 100-400 and 50-140 which do focus while zooming are great. I use BB focus so reaquiring focus after zooming is not a big problem for still photography.

People do buy zooms for the ability to focus pull in stills and video but it appears awful in this regard yet the 50-140 excellent. If both lenses carry same drive (LM) then what is the cause? 🤔

Somehow using my 16-80 copy the images sometimes are dull and blurry, slow focus. Only advantage is versatile angle, but no magic touch you get from prime lenses event on same f4 aperture.

the best part of 16-80 is the pairing with the 70-300. The 18-55 is a great pairing for the 50-200. But if you have the XT5 these two are both not the best.

In my X-H1 the 16-80 it is perfect, much more used than the 10-24mm. I can use it in a X-E3 perfectly but normally big lenses are more useful in big cameras like X-H1 and small ones (primes) like 18mm f:2, 35mm f:1.4 or 14mm f:2.8 or a Viltrox 56mm f:1.4, personally I prefer this primes to a 18-55mm, never used that lens because 16-80 it is perfect so don’t need it.

I agree with you! I was so impressed with the 18-55 when a friend showed it to me that when I jumped into the Fuji system I got my X-T3 with it as the kit lens. I used it for a short bit until the 16-80 came out. I tend to only use it with larger cameras though. Smaller cameras I use the 18-55 or the Fujicrons.

I have a lot of great Fuji primes but I am always surprised at the image quality of the small, unassuming 18-55. A talented photographer could make a living with that lens alone (it depends on what you shoot, of course).

If you are a hybrid shooter - you would never choose the 16-80mm. It loses focus as you zoom - I had one and sold it within 2 weeks, and went straight back to my 18-55mm.

Yes a great lens. I love that it’s a 2.8/4 and mostly metal. But as much as I like the lens for me it’s not wide enough or long enough so I opt for the 16-80 most of the time.
