I'm weary of reading the comments of would-be advisors to Carreras. Don't listen to what you don't like. I, however, am interested in Carreras' choices and the ways he challenged himself. A world-class artist nearly dies at the peak of his career and manages, as he himself said, two types of careers, before and after, and remains active into his 70's. I want to listen to a wonder like that.

Salve.

I think you've got the names mixed up, but yes. I don't know why modern directors now give it to Canio, who is in a frenzy after killing his wife, and therefore unable to differ reality from the show, instead of Tonio, who is just an observer.

@minuciofelice64654 жыл бұрын
@Veritas10668 жыл бұрын
Wish the Vienna State Opera would release the complete version of this (and many other operas performed at their house) on DVD as other opera houses have done, instead of just releasing little clips. So, so selfish. Someone once told me that it had to do with getting releases from all the performers. Well other houses have overcome that obstacle, why can't Vienna?

Carreras' handsome, fine features cannot be disguised and remind us throughout the opera that this Canio the clown is a man, a man in pain. His humanity and fragility are apparent in his desperation.

@31122051 Hai ragione carissimo amico mio.

Aragall cantando pagliacci... Encima le critica lo de actor. USTED NO HA IDO EN SU P. VIDA A UN TEATRO luciano1935.

Poor direction at the end, as much as i enjoyed the performance, i don't think she'd just stand there waiting to be killed and the same goes for Silvio...but fantastic other than that, Carreras is the best!!!
@lastofdmelocchians16 жыл бұрын
The reason del Monaco roars MAROKT, is that that IS his instrument. Carreras can NOT roar if he tried! He's a lyric tenor that's why he gives a LYRIC performance. Other lyrics who have attempted to roar & failed miserably was di Stefano. Plus, the character of Canio is more del Monaco than Carreras. It's like asking del Monaco to sing Nemorino..which Carreras sang beautifully. For me, Carreras doesn't do it for me as Canio @ all:( Vickers did a fine job singing Canio lyrically.
@celestiatv85465 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Carreras was always at his best as Nemorino, Edgardo, or Rossini's Otello. I have the full audio recording of his Edgardo (with Caballe), and at the end the love duet ("Verranno a te") is probably the only time I've heard him (or any tenor for the record!) hit a high E flat in full voice; almost impossible to tell that it was him from the recording. He was foolish to follow that monster Karajan's advice - as an awful price he has since completely lost his once-golden tone.
@billobrien51183 жыл бұрын
Maybe but by 1990, Carreras was bit too long in the tooth to still sing Nemorino. His illness took away the boyishness in his manner and features.
@juanito5561314 жыл бұрын

One of the stupidest staging decisions (and something I have occasionally seen in some other Pagliaccos) is to have Carerras with the knife in his hand from right after his aria. I mean, come on. You have an entire audience standing around and watching a guy with a knife in his hand for two minutes and no one tries to do something to stop him? Even worse, Nedda prances around singing despite seeing her raging husband with a drawn knife in his hand standing right next to her? Opera often requires one to suspend reality, but why do it to such a degree, especially when it is utterly unnecessary? Why not do it like in the Pavarotti Met performance, where Tonio slips it to him right before the final "il nome," or like the Corelli video, where he pulls it out right before he stabs her?
@marcela218849 жыл бұрын
Leo, if you don't have an intelligent comment to make, just shut up!
@lsmart9 жыл бұрын
Now THERE is an intelligent response if I ever saw one. You really showed everyone how unintelligent I was. Perhaps YOU were the staging director? Anyways, it was wonderful having such an intelligent debate with you.
@commandert57 жыл бұрын
Also just the whole ending in general. Canio and Nedda just stare at each while the orchestra plays the chase music.

One need only hear the opening "No Pagliacco, non son" to realize what a bad decision it was for Carerras to go dramatic. His utter lack of heft forces him to force in order to project a dramatic sound even for the lowest notes. Pavarotti (who was also criticized by many for his entry into dramatic roles) had far greater heft and depth to his sound. He also did not have to force at the top, since his easy and ringing high notes (aided by a far greater technique than Carerras) made up for a lack of real dramatic power. As for the claim below by MarinJosep (a presumed Carerras fanatic given his nick) that the strain is due to his recovering from leukemia - simply not true. First of all, his voice had already lost his velvety sheen before he became ill. Secondly, he already made recovery tours in 1988, and this is 1990.
@celestiatv85465 жыл бұрын
Absolutely correct! Carreras has always been a lyric tenor and always will be - his forcefulness seems to cause him to scream instead of sing. As you said, Pavarotti had the ringing high notes and therefore does not have to force - I agree also with that; there's a DVD of his Radames at La Scala, I've seen it and I can definitely hear his voice throughout the entire Act 2 finale, high notes sung securely with minimal forcefulness. And yes, Carreras lost his once-golden tone as far back as 1979 - when he took the advice of that scum Karajan. He should have stuck to his original repertoire (Gennaro, Nemorino, Edgardo, etc).
