In the original graphic novel, Soviet Bruce Wayne's parents were brutally murdered by the KGB, and he gave the head officer such a death stare that the officer literally couldn't take it and committed suicide. Obviously, that had to be changed for the movie, where his parents are worked to death (literally) in an underground labor camp. He blames Superman for not rescuing them sooner, which results in what's probably the movie's most memorable line: "They say you are the Superman. You can hear a leaf fall a thousand miles away and you never heard our cries?"

After watching the movie a few times I didn’t realize the first time that Svetlana is the Russian Lana Lang. The “Lana” part made me realize it when I said her name as she died “Man. Poor Svetlana. Wait! Svet-Lana. Lana. Wow. How did I not notice?”

Comic key differences: -Superman rejected WW romantic advances becauses he was too obsessed with Communism. Spreading it and making sure it works. WW still by the ends says his communists ways are wrong and ineffective like she did in the movie. -Brainiac does the opposite and insisted Superman NOT talk to Lex. Why? Because Brainiac calculated that there was a 97% certainty that confronting Lex would result with Superman's suicide. Lex was that much smarter than in the movie. -Lois only hands Superman an envelope with a single sentence written by Lex "why don't you just put the whole world in a bottle?" Superman falls to his knees defeated. The movie had the same message essentially. Rather than Brainiac admitting he could have reversed the city shrinking anytime. Superman comes to the realization on his own that he is an ineffective leader. That he could have reversed the shrinking anytime himself. He just didn't care. He cared more about ruling the word by his communist ideals. Ideals that ultimately lead to his justifying gulags, shrunken city, etc. Superman at his core is a good man that wanted to do good. He is defeated by his realization thanks to Lex, that he has failed almost entirely. In the comic by contrast Lex succeeded in by vritue of his technological advances. -Superman takes the bomb into space he realizes Lex is such a genius he could have disarmed it. But this was all part of Lex's overall plan to get rid of him. Superman had come to the conclusion that he doesn't have the right to dictate the course of humanity. So he never appears again as superman. Just that scene of him looking like Clark and being spottes by Lois. -Lex Luthor pretty much creates a technological utopia. He ends up living for like 300years. It shows how his surname goes from Luthor, L, and finally El. His descendant Jor-El sends his baby Kal-El back in time to warn people not to be complacent with the easy life technology provides because their society ignored all the signs the planet was going to explode. That's soviet Superman. It becomes a time loop.

While this movie is a solid version, I highly recommend watching the motion-comic movie! This movie basically follows the same plot lines, but the motion-comic is so much more in depth, and the political storylines are so much more complex. Not to mention that the ending is so powerful, completely rewriting the Superman mythos, and shows what a *good Lex Luthor is capable of. A lot of your frustrations with the story and hopes for what it could have showed to be better are all in the motion-comic movie. For a movie suggestion, I recommend the quintessential Superman movie, “Superman vs The Elite,” before beginning the Tomorrowverse.

Funny thing about Lex being bald: the Superboy comics tried to explain it by also making Lex and Superman... childhood friends. And Supes accidentally screwed up a chemical experiment, and made Lex bald. But yeah, he's a natural ginger that's been rendered bald from different experiments. Though I do wish they explored the childhood friend angle for an Elseworld story. Also, Superman becoming State property for the Soviet Union... well, first off: the Union acted like that because all of its citizens were explicitly owned by the state. And second: honestly, I'm surprised the movie gave him a choice to enlist. In the original comic, he was raised explicitly by the Soviet Government, not raised by Soviet farmers and then enlisting. Raised to believe achieving the "Liberation" of a Communist world by any available means as to destroy the corrupting forces of Capitalism. And I DO mean "ANY Means."
