Correction needed: Zimerman claims that in the first half of the XX century the situation of homosexuals in Poland was worse than in England, for example. This is nonsense. In 1927, Karol Szymanowski became rector of the Warsaw Conservatory and later of the Academy of Music. In 1952, Alan Turing was sentenced to 2 years in prison or hemicastration, which he chose to eventually commit suicide.. Homosexuality has never been punished in Poland. Never ever!

4:57 who would not love to hear more! As a young adult myself, I believe that he is not aware of how valuable and intriguing what he tells about music and life is. And his German interviews are just further proof of that. I wish all the best for what is to come. Many thanks to Deutsche Grammophon and Mr. Zimerman for releasing not only this, but also and especially the music.

Nah, there are lots of great, young pianists who have both a great technique and great musicality. Zimerman is certainly among the best pianists, but he isn't at all among the last great pianists, because great pianists are not dying out. You're simply blinded by nostalgia.

@some2l9 Well, I think we can speak of the fragility of such composers as Shostakovich, Chopin, Tchaikovsky or - here - Szymanowski. Many artists have rendered it their power. I don't assess mr. Zimerman, maybe in his case it's the wrong word.

I'm not sure why DG are releasing this so long after the recording itself, but thank you so much: it's rare to hear Maestro Zimerman speak so extensively and excursively on any subject, and every time he does there is at least some small gem to be gleaned, if not multiple revelations, so this was wonderful!

The very loveliest reading of the Ravel concerto. Not self indulgent. His playing lets the hypnotic quality of the rhythm be, without making that rhythm the servant of a more self-indulgent solo out of the right hand part. It works. It becomes the study in perpetual motion that I see in it. I love it. Not playing anywhere until Jan 2025 and then only one concert in Paris.

"Eastern Block countries"? Before the Second World War? What is he talking about? Szymanowski was "maybe a little bit different than the normal people"? "Problems were in England". "Oscar Wilde had to escape from England because of the same PROBLEM"? In 2023 words like "homosexuality", "being gay" or "homophobic society" won't even cross his (Zimerman's) lips. What a perfect product of the Eastern Block the pianist is himself. Homosexuality was decriminalised in Poland in 1932, the criminalisation of homosexuality in the UK did not end until 1967. And, by the way, why does this guy always have to put down his own country?

Can’t agree more about the characters of the orchestra in the old time and now. In the old time, the orchestra has their own character I guess befuddled of the conductor. Now they all sounds the same and if anyone dare do anything different, he’s simply got destroyed. Thank you for saying that out for us!

Re your second point, listen again. Zimerman doesn't refer to homosexuality itself as a "problem" -- he says that one theory surrounding Szymanowski's suicide attempt is that he may have realized that (like Oscar Wilde) he might well have to face persecution (or similar "problems in life") because of external social pressure to be "normal." Zimerman even gestures with his hands to indicate that he is placing the word "normal" in ironic air quotes: His suicide attempt may have been "simply the acknowledgment that he is maybe a little bit different than the 'normal' people in that age, and that because of that he might have [i.e. have to face] a lot of problems in life."

I'm saddened that he hasn't purchased Adrewzewsky's recording yet he criticizes KZbin."I'm amazed that he has the courage to speak out against publickly at his recitals on political things. Almost noone does this .I admire him and hos bravery but just as he says he won't impose music on others why then impose your understanding and views. We live in difficult, tragic times .Play music not play the piano" It must be annoying that everywhere there isthe noiseof current society . MariaPires problems now Zimmerman problems w/the press.2nd Ballade of Chopin ? I never heard this idea or have forgotten , I've readseveral bios of Chopin.I must research this ! This is an interview like very few and I try to find everything . He is so humble so respectful of the work of others . He knows Amy Beach .Amazing to hearhim talk of suck things -there must be a lot of repertoire he will never get a chance to record . He must stay as far as he can from today's culture . All " leveled" as he says . Capitalism and the owners of property ,everything from speeches trials and tennis shoes . So few people care and see this !
