GusBusGaming rugby players hit much softer considering they do not have pads whereas football players completely lay themselves out with the mentality they cannot get hurt as much because they have pads on. Rugby is much more technical with their hits, because they do not want to get injured when they perform a tackle therefore softer than football.

Matthew Mahala I see it more as because rugby players aren't as big and most of them don't try to tackle each other (it's more strategic in terms of who to tackle and when), there was never a need for protective clothing, whereas you have concussions every single game regardless of protection in the NFL. I've never heard of players having that mindset, I've never heard of players thinking they're invincible from the shoulder and knee pads...

I love both Rugby and NFL but OC is straight wrong. Neither is softer than the other. NFL is more explosive and focuses more on strength and intense bursts of speed or flying into a tackle at maximum speed thats why they need pads. Rugby is more endurance and skill based yet can also produce some incredibly hard hits. Rugby is alot more fast paced action and NFL is stop start because it needs to be. You just can't carry that much muscle mass and expect to last for more than 2 minutes running time. Yet you see bits of everything in both sports though. Much respect too people who play either professionaly

Even though they wear pads the force exerted on their body will be 3 times more powerful compared to rugby, and all that kinetic energy can't just disappear, it has to go somewhere (into the player). So technically American football hits a lot harder. But rugby has a lot more cardio. End of story

I'm not saying, rugby players don't hit hard. I'm sure they do, it's part of their sport. What I am really saying is Football players with pads on will have kind of this mental edge, feeling sort of invincible. So they tend to put they're body on line, that's why theirs so many gruesome injuries in football. Most of the time in rugby I've seen there is a lot of technique into tackling, and I'm not saying football doesn't have tackling technique, but with pads you can make such crazy and powerful tackles you don't need technique some times.
