Here is what I think of it... the Narrator is Stanley's boss. Stanley's job is to push buttons in which the monitor (his boss) tells him to too. His boss wants Stanley to have independence, So he tells Stanley to push buttons hoping that Stanley will figure out that he is sort of a 'robot, puppet, worker thingy'. Also, the whole wife and home thing is a lie. He does not have a life but imagines it all when he is pushing the buttons, so in affect, he has, and always will be, pushing buttons at his desk. But tbh, this game is F*CKING WEIRD!!! :(

(I know I'm quite late to this conversation) but I think, as I've seen in a KZbin video, that Stanley is in a science lab, and is just a test object, identified by nothing more than his name. And he is thrown into many different situations, and you watch how he reacts. There is no real storyline or actual character named Stanley, or the narrator, or Marielle.

yo, you know if you actualy played into that game alot more and invested say 10 hours into it one day like i did there is a never ending reem of endings and possibilites of the outcomes, e.g i ended up on a copy of mine craft and many many other things, and there some rly deep jokes. you just have to invest time into it all in one go, to truly beat the stanly parable, there is a way of wining and there is also a way to prevent the whole office being destroyed by a neuclear bomb.

***** It depends on the path you follow. The more you disobey, the more you derail the narrative. The game has many endings. Some endings may contradict each other. In some endings the narrator narrates the story, in some others he adresses Stanley, the character, in some else he fully breaks the fourth wall and adresses the player. In the end it is less about telling a cohesive story and more about showcasing the illusion of choice in video games. The museum ending may adress it the best, while the choice ending conveys it beautifully by separating the player from Stanley in the end. Also the narrator wants to tell his story, but it is way to much fun preventing him from doing so. The game may touch philosophical topics but also runs heavily on the rule of funny.
