Hi there! Your video helped a lot but I have one question. What if the speaker tag was after the sentence for example “I need to buy groceries after work,” he said. Where does the coma go?
@kspaans Жыл бұрын
Hello! Our second quotation marks video covers that very topic. (We have three videos on quotation marks; this was just part one.) I'd encourage you to check out that video and let me know if you still have questions!

Can you please upload a video where to use commas? I got confused with commas when I write a paragraph.

@@gksaalai5631 We have several videos on commas, actually! Just search "Kevin Spaans commas," and you'll find them!

Hi I learned a lot from this video but how do determine whether or not you put punctuation inside quotation mark or outside?
@kspaans11 ай бұрын
Hey there! In American English, the punctuation generally goes *inside* of the quotation marks. In British English, the punctuation generally goes *outside* of the quotation marks. The only real exceptions in American English come when exclamation points or question marks are used. Sometimes, these punctuation marks are not part of the actual quote but are instead part of the larger sentence. Here are two examples (with a made-up "could be anything" phrase in the quotation marks): 1. Did you hear Stacy talking about "flibbity flobbers"? 2. I can't believe you just mentioned "flibbity flobbers"! In both of the above examples, the end punctuation is not part of the quote; it's part of the larger sentence. I hope this makes sense!

I have a question! What if there was a interruption in the sentence? For example, “Come here,” she said, “we’ve got to go.” This example may be terrible but does the comma go inside the quotation before the ‘mom said’ or after?
@kspaans2 жыл бұрын
Hey there, Klara! Part 3 of this series actually covers split quotations like that. But in a nutshell, you're right: - "On the way to work," he said, "I saw a deer." - "When you get the chance," she said, "can you call me back?" - "After work," I said, "I need to finish my homework." I hope this makes sense!

I have a question how would you continue after the qoutations. Like does a new sentence start or do you put a period after. Example He said, " I like ice-cream." She thought that was nice. Or He said, " I like ice-cream.". She thought that was nice. And how would this change with exclamations and question mark. Maybe im being dumb but i don't see people continuing past one sentence and was confused

Hey there! Let's see... CORRECT: He said, "I like ice cream." She thought that was nice. CORRECT: He said, "I love ice cream!" She thought that was nice. CORRECT: He asked, "Do you want some ice cream?" She told him that she would love some. I hope this makes sense! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks. The only thing that confused me, was the "Speaker tag" not having a comma on that one. Would like to learn more.
@kspaans3 жыл бұрын
Hey, Keith--can you tell me which example you're talking about. I'm looking through them, and they all appear to have commas to me. (The only one I see that doesn't have a comma was the following sentence: Mark said that he needed to leave at five. And the reason that one has no commas or quotation marks is because no dialogue is being explicitly spoken in that sentence.)
@keithclark80303 жыл бұрын
@@kspaans It was the one that said, "Mark said he needs to leave at 5." However, after watching your other two videos, now I understood why there was no dialogue needed. It was not your training. I do need help with this stuff. Thank you sir.
