California’s deadliest road is likely one you drive on every day

A recently released study revealed that deaths from car crashes rose considerably across California between 2018 and 2022, and data indicates that many of the deadly collisions occurred on SoCal roadways.

There's a saying that the skill behind a driver is not the road but it's the driver. Speeding is a contributing factor that is applicable not just on freeways but on local streets as well. My advice for all drivers is to be aware of your surroundings. Don't just focus on what's ahead of you but what is to the sides and rear. Having excellent reflex is a plus in response to a situation that can potentially prevent you to getting into an accident.

Semis on the left lane, people swerving through traffic just to save 1 minute, people on passing lanes going under the speed limit (more dangerous than speeding), Tesla drivers on their phones (still swerving out the lane almost got pushed out by one last week) and just people on their phones in general. The 15 in San Bernardino alone sees almost half a million drivers every day. Ortega Hwy sees about 10k. Volume alone makes the 15 more dangerous….however per car, Ortega is much more dangerous.

Look at youtube and tiktok.. the addiction to social media, where is this leading you may ask lol? well, people can no longer watch a video more than a few minutes anymore so they watch these less than 30 second videos. The irony of this report is the unmentioned bias. I-15 in San Bernadino County is the longest stretch of this highway in the state as SBC is the largest county. I-10 in Riverside County is the same deal. Both counties run all the way to state line....

Some context on the leading cause being speeding: When a crash is investigated, they look at everything that happened leading up to it, include it in the report, and all those factors are later totaled up to determine things like the "leading cause" with zero regard for what actually caused the collision. For example, a drunk driver that's busy texting while searching on the passenger-side floor for their lit cigarette blows through a red light and hits crossing traffic. The red light camera caught them doing 48 in a 45 when they entered the intersection. This incident is now added to the total of crashes with "speeding" as a listed cause even though it was in no way the cause or even a significant factor. "Speeding" being counted this way isn't likely to change though. It gives law enforcement license to spend a disproportionate amount of time issuing profitable speeding tickets, gives insurance companies a great excuse to raise rates when you get that ticket, and gets municipalities out of having to take responsibility for poorly designed and/or horrifically over-capacity roads as a cause for anything.

I drive on the 15 Cajon pasd everyday I can tell you one of the main reasons ppl speed is because theres literally 0 police presence youll hardly ever see a CHP on the pass I dont think Ive ever seen someone pulled over in years.

Because the only reliable source for traffic accident data and stats is from the NHTSA…National Traffic and Highway Safety Administration. They are incredibly accurate, and will wait until an accident and it’s cause has been solved before publishing the data.

If there's one freeway I always try to avoid is the 15fwy especially during rush hour traffic, it gets really bad. Lots of people speeding and there's always lots of slowdowns (which means those speeding have to do a lot of slowing down). It just seems to get worse every year, too many people in a rush to save 5 or 10 minutes.

These numbers don't tell you anything. Divide the deaths by the number of people on the road in the same period and you will get a figure that you can compare with the others.

Why not just limit the speeds that cars can attain legally on our roads stop allowing super fast cars from being made and sold and allowed to operate on any road in this country. Too many very fast cars are being built and sold to drive much faster than the the fastest highway speeds even allowed nationwide. I say do this enforce it and not apply it to first responders and military vehicles.

The faster you go, the more space you need in front of you. It's really important, yet I get harassed for leaving plenty of space in front of me in both heavy and light traffic. Go around me if you prefer to be on someone's butt. Also, people need to mind the traffic rules like slower traffic to the right and faster traffic to the left. Stay out of the fast lane if you're not actively passing so you can let the stupid speed demons by and out of any possibilitiesthey will hit you if trafficsuddenlyslows down. Pay attention at all times means not talking or texting on the phone regardless of it being hands-free. Quick calls only. Drive for the weather. You shouldn't be going 70+ when it's raining. I often have to skip the freeway when it's raining moderately to pouring because drivers are driving way too fast. The 15 fwy has always been dangerous. I avoid it like the plague. The 57 and 60 freeways have fast drivers outside of traffic hour, and they manage not to have accidents on the whole.

Ok, what do the 5, 10 and 15 freeways all have in common? They are all INTERSTATE freeways which means you have drivers from all over the nation using them not just Californians. And these three freeways are the MAIN interstate semi trucking routes through California. Statistically just the presence of heavy semi traffic is known to increase accidents for a whole variety of reasons not necessarily reflective of the trucker's driving skills. Weather related issues, truck maintenance and poor visibility for other drivers just being a few examples. So we need to be realistic about the real causes of these accidents.

That’s a negative ..you should have had reported junctions in SoCal to let visitors know which ones are the worst . Like the 10 to the 605 /210 or the 60/57 and the 101/ 57 .. all those areas during traffic hour you have to merge all the time where the people going 101 are coming from the 57 or the 5 and vice versa where they’re making last minute decisions to cross over because they’re relying to much on gps just look at the map before you drive where they shouldn’t be a problem anymore our great grandparents can do it our grandparents can do it so why can’t we just learn to memorize a road map that we use everyday instead of relying so much on a gps .
