He's a 17-year old, protected by the same rules any other minor is protected by. The victim was not a minor, and is dead, so different rules apply. If the positions were reversed, the privacy rules would be reversed. If it makes it to a criminal trial, there's a good chance it will no longer be private, but at this point he's not officially guilty of anything. I don't know what you think is wrong with society that's being reflected by observing "innocent until proven guilty" and treating minors differently than adults, but there are decent reasons for most rules.

The one thing I learned as a child was that the rich or famous received a slap on the wrist while the rest of us peasants received the full weight of the law and, in some cases wrongful prosecution due to corrupt cops. Not only that but even for an ordinary joe like you & me, making $30-100,000/ year, the insurance policy on a $2M car isn't something we can afford And besides, I don't know if its legal in California, but in Texas if tou can prove ownership of a certificate of deposit CD with your bank of $100,000 or more, you meet the minimum requirement for liability-only insurance. But since his insurance company is paying, his monthly payments must've been above the $800 range. And when his boy is released from juvenile camp, chances are he'll be driving another Lamborghini, maybe a McLarin. there is something called defensive driving.
