Only question I have at the moment is how big a fire? Don't they dump all fuel before committing to a landing without landing gear? I would not worry about the company though, they are so embedded in government procurement no way they ever screw up enough to not make bank each and every quarter. I mean, when you can charge our government $800 for a $30 off the shelf soap dispenser, you getting that manna from heaven that the obscenely wealthy dream of. A proverbial Tim Apple profit margin :-)

Bird strikes do not cripple landing gear 🙄
@willj1598

Not unless 3 birds manage to hit all three in the minute after takeoff before they retracted. And all three damaged the gear so it couldn't be manually lowered. From the little clip I've seen it looks like the gear was fully retracted, which I would take to mean they were in a known emergency landing, or they were the worst pilots ever to not know the gear was up

A bird strike on a single engine has never left an aircraft unable to lower the gear, flaps & the slats or control the other working engine. The raw video of this crash show a aircraft not decelerating and the engines roaring at full power. If anything it looks like a failed go around after landing without landing gear. Has all the hallmarks of panic in the cockpit. This report doesn't show the full crash.

Why were the flaps not deployed to slow down the speed?
@bryantc2899
@bryantc2899 18 күн бұрын
The flaps would have been already activated at 30 degree. But the pilots should have known that the landing gear was not down all the way. At that point, they should have switch to an emergency plan, while bringing the landing gear back up, full throttle, dump jet fuel, and then decide the best method to get the bird down. If you have the back part of the landing gear, you can touch down with that first and then skid, kill the engine. Or land the bird in a lake or river. Sounds like to me they just panicked.

At the root of the problem I think is a more frequent and thusly more costly maintenance schedule for the hydraulic systems on the Boeing 737 and the Boeing 777 and some of the airbus planes that have been having trouble and it all leads back to One or two components manufacturing corporations mainly centered in Canada as their primary base of operations.

This is an "if" statement. IF you know the landing gear isn't deployed, then you would probably want to do what the pilot around New York did, when he landed on the Hudson River. Just go to any water or ocean, and try your luck doing that. At least it won't burn. You might drown instead. I think it's a better idea, to try that.
@-Primer-
@-Primer- 18 күн бұрын
No, just no. Someone forgot to put the gear down. Probably overstressed because of the bird strike and got tunnel vision. Here's my guess. 1. Bird strike on approach. 2. Tries to restart engines, while trying to maintain airspeed. 3. Leaves gear up to maintain airspeed. 4. Either forgets or does not have enough hydraulic pressure to get gear down during landing. 5. Had flaps in wrong position to slow aircraft for landing, but not too slow to stall the wing.
@Tokamak3.1415
@Tokamak3.1415 18 күн бұрын
Water landing is even harder than landing on land without landing gear. You have to fly perpendicular to the swells and feather the flair such that it doesn't break the hull on contact. The problem here was a late touchdown (after the go-around) way past the threshold, no reverse thrust on bird struck right engine, no flaps so high speed to avoid stall, limited 2.8km runway, and a reinforced wall holding ILS beacons instead of light metal framing. Swiss cheese all around. CVR should hopefully answer if pilots were incapacitated to deploy gear manually.

Instead of jst doing nothing, as it seem to b when it comes to prevention or lessening the intensity of crash in the future, change the design of the plane. Why don't they put something like a parachute that ejects when a landing gear fails, like some jets and planes have. It may have stopped the plane much sooner and prevented it from colliding into a wall or lighting the gas tank from sparks. Without it, there is nothing but friction of metal on hard rock with some minor wind resistance that's slowing down that plane. Could have saved 179 lives.

Boeing made the airplane 737. However, someone buying a plane from Boeing must maintain the plane by checking properly before they fly. Same you buy a car you have to check regularly by bringing your car to the garage to make sure your car works properly. So who is to blame if an airplane crashes with the landing gear not working properly. Airlines always have its own shop and can check the airplanes regularly to ensure they are current and up to date.

Typical news oversimplification. A plane can land without landing gear, it sucks but it can be done. They should have known and prepared for it before landing so it was probably already an emergency aircraft. Unfortunately it seems they were also fast and probably why they overran. It will be interesting to learn what other flight control issues they had. If they didn't have flaps and spoilers they would have to come in faster. I don't know if they can use reverse thrust in this emergency. The engines probably struck the ground, which would damage the reversers. I guess that's why they spend a long time investigating, there's not a short answer to everything.

Regardless of whether it is a manufacturing problem or a maintenance problem, there is still a trend. Even if it is a maintenance issue, then that still begs the question of why Boing aircrafts in particular seem to be lacking in proper maintenance compared to others.

@@bekahbabie cause smaller airlines struggle with high maintenance costs, fewer qualified mechanics and engineers so companies compete to hire them. Btw maintenance costs represent like 15% of total operating costs and you have to recognize they operate on razor thin margins. Like 2-5%. It’s why America only has a couple airlines the small ones from the past couldn’t compete.
