One of the things that you missed, is an Öhlins shock absorber. You will feel the difference, especially on offroad. I personally broke the stock shock 3 times, and then I went for Öhlins, because of the 6 years warranty. It was a pleasant surprise that it performs much better than the stock.

The first comment you made about growing up in the dirt and then moving to adventuring/road sections was exactly the reason I also chose the 690 platform. I have an 08 that has evolved, and has pretty much everything you have mentioned or done. I can attest to nearly 40,000 miles that these machines are tough and capable (notwithstanding items that wear) . The other big thing is that they are light enough (compared to the 1000cc+ bikes) that going by yourself is probably more doable especially when you have to drag, lift or dig yourself out of a situation. I also added oxford heated grips :-D

thanks for the video, just got a CRF 300 L setup for off road. If I would of seen this bike before. that is the way I would of went, so looking down the road. in a year or so, I also have a KTM 390 Adventure and a DR 650 with a 20 liter gas tank. On the KTM I have GVI Trekker 33/46 hard bags. Thinking if this bike had a larger gas tank could take the place of the CRF and the KTM 390 But do not like the look of all the soft bags, much prefer hard bags. what is there in hard side bags and top box, for this bike and what would the volume be. Also would like more information on the gas tanks you put on. and as far as wind protection I do not like it, much prefer the wind on my chest, Hear on the island we have a lot of wind and I love riding in it. Again great video but would like to see a build with hard bags. I travel light even on three week trips. A three man tent and sleeping bag on the seat and every thing else in the hard bags. including battery air pump and tools. I like hard side wall tire so hope I never get a flat out in the middle of no where.

With such a tall bike, and with so much stuff on it, how in the world do you mount and dismount the bike. I'm about 5'6" and 230 lbs; I'm afraid it would not be possible for me.
@rmatvmc4 жыл бұрын
I have 3 methods: The easiest and most controlled (kickstand strength test) is leaving the bike on the kickstand, stepping up on the peg and swinging the other foot over the top of everything. Then I kick the sidestand back. The second method (high kick)is to hike up my pants and kick as high as I can. I get my heel on the seat and slide through. The third is a little more advanced (rolling mount). I start the bike, put it in gear, and start rolling. As I’m rolling, I put my near foot on the footpeg for a few feet until I am stable, then throw the other leg over. Hope that helps!

@rmatvmc7 жыл бұрын
The price of a set of aftermarket panniers was what inspired us to develop our own. To cut down the cost and create a more affordable pannier set without sacrificing the build quality. And we're confident we acheived that with our Tusk Aluminum Panniers. A pair of medium boxes gives you up to 54 Liters of storage. You obviously want to pack as light as you can, but as far as a max weight limit with these panniers they do not have one. We did a lot of testing with our prototypes and not one failed. Hope this helps. Thanks. ~Vinny

+FullSpectrum Survivalist Thanks, what kind of mileage do you get at highway speeds? I'm think about using this for long highways trips between Vegas and San Diego
@SpectrumSurvivalist8 жыл бұрын
Evan Hasson I don't have one, but was thinking of getting one so was doing research. I did find a page that had average MPG for about 80 bikes. I think you can count on at least 45 MPG. Also, Highway speeds can mean anywhere from 60 to 80MPH depending on who you are and where you are. Probably 45 to 50 would be about right. I was looking at it from a survival bike standpoint. So I figured out with the two tanks I found should be over a 400 mile range. Here are the two links, front tank from one place, with rear tank from another. Tanks are high priced, but I think buy once, cry once. Worth it for the extra range IMHO, not like the bike is cheap anyway. I would go with the clear tank then paint it, but tape up a 1 inch line up the side of the tank so you can check fuel level by eye too. I own a '23 701 and regard these as "dual sports" and not ADV bikes. This is way too much weight bolted onto this already beefy machine for my taste, and for me all that extra weight would completely ruin the experience of riding the athletic 690. Then again, I despise tent camping so strapping a ton of stuff to my 701 ain't gonna happen anyway 😆 I also have a big ADV bike for strapping way too much stuff to as a touring rig, but of course that never ventures over anything that couldn't be navigated in a car. Actually, a well driven AWD Subaru can go places most big ADV bikes should really fear to tread anyway. I put two rate stiffer .65 fork springs in my '23 701, it made a world of difference in keeping that bike's otherwise very good XPLOR forks up in the stroke. They come unbalanced from the factory, the rear spring is too stiff (probably to help accommodate passengers or luggage) for the soft fork springs. Stiffen up the fork springs to match to the shock and an unladen 690 can take on some terrain for a heavy bike, although I think an XR 650L with similar money thrown at it could be better from a handling standpoint. The KTM's heavy engine is low and forward, so it carries a lot of weight on the front tire. This makes for a nice planted front end on the street, but it is a bit of a liability when riding off road at a faster pace, as ya gotta really give it the beans to lift the front end on the KTM. The XR and DR do much easier wheelies, and aside from being stupid fun, getting the front end up is useful at times when crossing terrain. In it's considerable favor, the 690 engine, especially when tuned and allowed to breathe, runs rings around the old school DR and XR engines. A properly uncorked and tuned LC4 truly is a joy to ride. Not mentioned in the video but now mandatory on the newer LC4 bikes are exhaust and fueling mods to correct the overly lean stock settings. To be blunt, the new Euro 5 compliant LC4's are set so lean that they run like shit, with a weak low end. Also, the CAT in the muffler runs dangerously hot. The new bike's are smooth with their twin counterbalancers though. I love my fueling and exhaust modded '23 701, but it cost stupid money to buy the bike and get it to where I wanted it to be. Oh well, it is a solid go nearly anywhere kick in the pants to ride now, and the big thumper soundtrack out of it's Yosh can is sweet indeed! It is also worth noting that the same company that makes the side tanks shown in the video makes a single tank that replaces the stock airbox that adds a gallon of capacity, bringing the total to about 4.25, which makes for an easy 185 to 215 mile range given my bike's 50 MPG average fuel economy.

This is a good question. When you get on the bike and compress it down a little and then go ride on some bumpy terrain, you compress it even more balancing out that forward angle you're seeing, making them parallel to the ground.

We mounted our Tusk Panniers with a slight pitch forward to follow the lines of the bike. You are welcome to mount yours as level to the ground as you would like.

What size duffle bag is that on the back?

Noticed when you first started talking about your tires, a bent rim on the front? :-)
@rmatvmc8 жыл бұрын
+ladyknieval - Yeah! It will need a new front rim soon. Not sure if it is weak or if the heavier bike is a factor, but that rim started looking bad after the first real adventure ride!

(Lots of KTM bling) but can 690's handle a real Adventure? Cape York Jungle Adventure KTM 690 - Part 2

Queenslander. The rocker arm issues have been solved. Probably didn’t help that Tom was on the back wheel so much.

is this set up for a passenger ?
@rmatvmc8 жыл бұрын
+whit3strat You can carry a passenger if you like. Eric likes to have passenger footpegs to kick his feet back to change up the riding position on longer rides. Our Tusk Pannier Racks requier the removal of the OEM passenger pegs. And you can optionally run the Bike Master passenger pegs.

+Rocky Mountain ATV MC very cool. I didn't think it came with passenger pegs stock but I might have missed them when looking at pics.
@rmatvmc8 жыл бұрын
whit3strat Yes. Your KTM 690 does come with passengers footpegs. They're actually quite nice and well designed.

Does your Zumo 590lm work on trails?
@rmatvmc8 жыл бұрын
+CycleCruza We downloaded BaseCamp from Garmin. It's free! You can view maps, plan routes, and mark waypoints and tracks from your computer and then transfer the .gpxfile to your device.

Rocky Mountain ATV MC I'm debating between the zumo and montana, most people seem to recommend the montana.
@rmatvmc8 жыл бұрын
+CycleCruza The 590lm provides a ton of features, the most we've seen. If you are not needing or are going to be taking advantage of all those features, i would say the Montana is a great choice! both we hear solid reviews on!

Does anyone know the weight capacity you can carry using this rack and panniers?

i feel like with all the stuff you added to it, you ultimately converted it to an adventure ride. why didn't you buy an adventure model to begin with? unless the video's purpose is to advertise gadgets...

We needed the more capable and nimble bike for the rougher off-road trails. The KTM 690 and Husky 701 platforms are awesome for that!
