The 2023 KTM Freeride EXC electric dirt bike is very unique. It was first produced way back in 2012, but was only shipped to the U.S. in limited quantities and it was never really promoted. This is not a motocross bike, not a trials bike and not an Enduro bike, it's a 'Freeride' and it was designed to open new opportunities for riding locations where sound can be an issue. It's been used by KTM to learn about, test and develop electric bikes and now, it's finally getting some attention from KTM.
KTM recently announced their at their North American Dealer Summit: "By the middle of this decade, the electric lineup will feature more than 20 electric offroad motorcycles from all brands, ranging from beginner to competition-level models, aimed at young talents who are taking the future of motorsports to the next level.” With this in mind, we were intrigued to ride the KTM E-bike that has secretly been around for over 10 years now.

I hadn't raced or ridden in 35 years. These bikes were perfect for getting back in the dirt. The adjustable power was also perfect. They don't stall in turns which was helpful. One thing I really liked about the KTM was the size, I think it is about 7/8 of a regular bike. The odd things for me: It's not a 500 2t; the first 5 minutes you keep checking which tire is flat as you can hear the tire noise; there isn't a clutch; the rear brake where the clutch would be is startling at first; it's not a 500 2t, doesn't have that premix smell, and doesn't go broaaap. Electric is definitely the way to go for the 50 and 60 classes. With a big enough back yard you will be good to go without pissing off the neighbours. ICE dirt bikes will be around for a long time, but electrics will eventually be the future. People who are hostile to them before even trying one are just clueless.

The braking situation (no foot brake) is actually the same thing as always for anyone who has ever ridden BMX or any pedal bike. It also encourages you to keep your feet on the pegs and stand up. I think it's a plus. I'm excited about the electric bike future...even though it does simplify things (for the high end racing perspective - no clutch, no gear shifts, no engine inertia). I'm a 2-stroke guy, but man! I really want a full on racer (e.g., Stark Varg). Looking forward to seeing what KTM can do for MXers.

As long as you don't need more than 45mph, these things are pretty capable. I have about 100 videos abusing one. They're crazy fun if you can fight off the "No Braap, No fun!" crowd. It's like the worlds best pitbike. You'll get 25-40min riding it hard. Avg trail ride more like 2 hours. Just charge the battery off the clothes dryer. It's not rocket surgery 😉

@@philmoiz I have a dirt bike and a Surron on the way so I can't comment on the Surron yet. But I don't see why someone would prefer a dirt bike over a modded Surron aside from range and top end speed. And maybe durability if you're smashing huge jumps.

I have two Freeride e’s and they’re a blast. 25 ish hp but the torque of a 450sx from zero rpm. Easy to hot swap batteries for a full day of riding. I also have an Alta MXR which has 50 hp but 147 ft lbs of torque. Definitely faster than 450s out there. The Stark Varg is the best selling e MX bike with 15K ordered so far and climbing every day. No current ice MX bike can even approach that sales volume. Spend some time on KZbin and watch the reviews. From magazine test riders, to pros to amateurs, they all love the bike and e bikes in general.

Great video. I was hoping you did an MX test with the Freeride (and other bikes not ideal for MX). Is it possible to ride MX, the bike will break in 2, or just a less-than-ideal ride in a competitive race? For example, a Goldwing CAN ride an MX track, but is a Freeride at least fast enough to keep up with the crowd and not be a safety hazard? A range test would also be nice, comparing the range with a dirt-road, trail, and track time. I get this point this is just a fun bike.

Great review! I"ve always liked this bike, but the price was too high considering its abilities and compared to competition. The Sur-Ron Ultra Bee really killed this. This summer these were $7999 at many shops across the USA. I've seen some on sale today at $5999! Yes, 6k. KTM must certainly be getting ready to release a whole new model in this category.

Our lake house is in a gated neighborhood so i ride it all over the place. I'm interested in getting a full electric dirt bike for some of the trails in this area do you recommend it? I wouldn't buy it to replace a gas dirt bike but just something fun to whip around on.

40 minute range…So KTM is trying to sell an electric woods bike that you might be able to get a 20 mile ride out of for 11k SMH. I’m not a KTM hater, I ride a 300 xcw, but this has way too many cons. I get why they’re not trying to move a bunch of units.

I wonder if it would still get 20 miles in slower, more technical terrain where that would be a good couple hours of riding or more. For example, if it could complete a loop around the 5 Miles of Hell, starting and ending at the parking area (a 19.5 mile loop). That would be a great youtube vid.

Even though this bike is really expensive, it's appealing to me because it doesn't have a header pipe that glows red when you ride slow due to the emissions restrictions that were placed on it by California. I had some leaves get caught on the header pipe of my KLX 230R and I was doing some first gear slow type trails riding and those leaves caught fire. I demonstrate this on my KZbin channel where I reviewed the bike. I'm definitely looking to replace it with an e-bike that won't catch fire when I ride on terrain that has dry crispy leaves but that fee to join the e-bike party is pretty steep..

The old farts on the porch watching the dirt bike go by. One says to the other, must be the hearing aids battery’s dead cause that things so quiet!

Any review of an electric motorcycle should tell us the range in the first minute. Range is the reason why no one will buy these. Too bad it is so heavy, too.

The Freeride actually feels like a 125 when you’re riding. The weight is very deceptive and you really only feel it when you put it on a center stand. Swappable batteries makes riding all day possible with a given area/range. It’s not for everyone but it works for a lot of folks.

This is a toy, not a bike, and it s too expensive for a toy. If it was around 7000€ (not 13000...) i would have already bought it

3 modes, and yes, it's not going to beat a gas bike unless they don't know what they're doing or if it's a 50 or a 65.

"Stark Varg" is already proving this way wrong. I love gas but now that I own an electric, I see why it's the future in motorcross.

Why when i can ride all day cheaper on a real bike and a tank of gas... not 30 min and have to let it charge again

I understand why seemingly EVERY dirtbike review by people in So. Cal ends up at Glen Helen...its close and convenient. But come on guys...quit being lazy and cheap. Quit reviewing woods bikes or even cross country bikes on the Glen Helen track. Schedule...spend the extra $, and drive to the woods. You dont see guys reviewing 450 sx bikes on tight gnarly singletrack. Put the bike in the environment when 90% of us will ride them.

An 85 is a motocross bike, and the freeride is an enduro/trail bike, so yes, of course, an 85 will beat the freeride.

As it turns out…this is one of the most watched MXA videos based on release date. E bikes are becoming available around the world and the Stark Varg is the most sold dirt bike of all current bikes.

@@jmos96 Only 400 people have hit like. A little girl crying over a cat is good for a few hundred thousand for comparison. The only ones grabbing electric junk are after tax cattle funds or tax breaks.

Except once the battery tech catches up, they’ll dominate. Also opens up a lot more riding areas. Noise has shut down so many good places.
