Well this is a bummer, however expected with all the new crap.. I have a restored ‘07 250sx.. there’s like 3 wires on the whole bike lol carbs are easy, sure you can’t get the most performance out of them but it’s fractions of percentages anyway. My model carb bike comes with more HP according to KTM. The new stuff is so complicated & requires so many systems..
@moto-x

The carbed bikes are more reliable right now and similar or better performance. The efi bikes are smoother less of a hit but that is all manageable with a carb bike with the power valve adjuster and gearing. Stick with the carb bike, in a few years everyone will be seeking them.

I have a 2024 Husqy TE300 and it’s the best dirt bike ever IMO. If this issue does happen for some crazy reason then my dealer will handle it. Came from a carbureted bike and there’s just no comparison especially riding at high elevations above 13,000 feet in Colorado.

Lol, you’re dealer won’t cover it, mainly because they can’t figure it out. KTM can’t figure these out and if your past your first piston change in hours you won’t even have a shot. Glad your bike is good. These aren’t isolated incidents, there’s more then a few of these bikes having issues. Additionally when you have to buy tps tools, diagnose electronics, reseal ccps, and try to fix your new bike that’s a poor customer experience. This isn’t 1979 where all bikes were not reliable. Shame on KTM for putting out unproven technology.

When you start any engine let it warm up and ride easy for 2 or three minutes. Don't redline it with no load. This stretches the clearance out of rod and stretches the rod. If the squish clearance is a little small it might let the piston hit the head. Increase your premix oil. You can try 32:1. Maxima 927 or your favorite high rpm premix. More oil may need a richer fuel mixture. There should be a procedure to richer up the TBI. Just clean the spooge off the silencer. It means you are getting plenty of oil.50:1 ratio premix has more additives in it to make up for less base oil. More oil gets up the bottom of piston to lube and cool it. My 2 cents.
@moto-x
@moto-x 11 ай бұрын
Thanks for the advice, been around the block a time or two with two strokes. Aside from all the normal things we knowledgeable two stroke folks do, these bikes have issues. The bike was already warmed up, it’s illustrating the surging while holding the throttle steady. These issues are well beyond basic two stroke warm up and premix.

I can't recommend this bike based on my experience and two close friends, plus the countless others. I would give these bikes a few more years. KTM sells thousands of these bikes each year - some guys run them in ways they are not built for so you're going to see some crazy photos and videos. So if this is such a major issue across the board like you're saying, where are all the posts on the internet? Now days if your new bike doesn't hold up owners plaster the complaint all over the internet. I don't see the problem you show...happening. Also, all bikes have their issues and you can find every type of bike with blown engines. I guess we'll need to come back to your post here in a few months and see if there are just tons of people posting about this issue or if this is just another one man internet story with a few people that got unlucky and that will join your story.

You cannot take that as an indicator. The entire market is fucked right now. You can’t give away a used bike right now damn near. People want them for free. Thusly the reason you see so many bikes up for dirt cheap right now. Not because there’s anything wrong with them. It’s across the board. All manufacturers and models. Without disrespect to the problems you have a few remarks and questions. There is always a change stuff breaks, you can have bad luck or a production failure in parts. It happens with every brand, model, car or bike. I worked at a Mercedes dealership where a customer got his new C220 CDI, normally an engine good for at least 500.000km, the guy called half an hour later, engine was exit. It happens. I'm curious about statistics of these failures, where do they come from, it's quite normal people with complaints (right or not) post videos or messages on forums, while satisfied owners usually don't. So I'm really interested in seeing how many bikes fail if it's really a deviation to other bikes. It's new tech so it attracts attention. It's easy to have conclusion but is it true. By the way, some of the broken pistons look like detonation failures. For me one of the reasons not to buy a 300SX yet, can't change the mapping. I'm lucky to have pretty good fuel here for a decent price, that helps but not being able to change mapping is a problem in my opinion. The 2025 model seems to get an ecu / app where you can, at least the 2024.5 fourstroke models have this option. My experience in 12 years of ktm's, containing 125's, 150's, 250, 250f, 350f, 450f is they all run a bit too lean for my conditions stock. The past few years they also closed the fourstroke ecu's, so we were forced to run GET or Carrot ecu's, not fun in means of costs. Anyway, it really sucks if you have a fairly new bike and it still breaks, not really used to that anymore, in the 90's it was more normal. Hope it will be fixed for you so you can enjoy the bike again.

@moto-x 10 ай бұрын
Thank you. Unfortunately there was nothing they could do, not KTM, not anyone. So you either have a bike that runs terrible randomly and don't ride or you move on. It's disappointing because I have had three other KTM's and they have been great, but these new TBI's need some time. Nonetheless, KTM should not have put these out to the masses yet.

@@moto-x You're right, this needed more testing in more different situations. KTM moves forward quite quickly, and while that creates innovation I've got the feeling it's sometimes a bit too quick. @@drpork1360apparently you forget to read the part where I said "It is my opinion" and yes I stick to what I said! Like I said I have respect for KTM just not a fan of all the electrical crap they have put on them even if it does make it better for some riders even though the biggest reason they put rev limiters is because they are using cheap parts, just look at all the problems they have now and how many top ends are doa or dead after a couple rides and that is with a rev limiter. I get what you are saying though and for some it is a good thing and I give KTM respect for furthering two stroke tech just not a fan of it, just old school I guess!!!

ktm has to get their head out of their ass cuz we all pay a lot for their "high quality austrian" bikes but they keep lowering production quality control which makes them have these issues. more recently they have been getting taiwan to make engine parts. Taiwan or even chinese produced engine parts isnt inherently bad, if the company puts a lot of money into production they can secure great quality parts and great quality control but Ktm seems to be lacking there. the electrical issues are purely from poor quality control and not putting enough money into testing and development (pocketing it all) and the piston/crank contact may just be a one time engineering mistake but still, we pay a lot so we want a good product. if i get another bike it'l probably be a kawasaki, yamaha, or honda until ktm stops this crap.

Throttle Body injection has nothing to do with this, in fact the relocation of one of the injectors into the throttle body allows for a better combustion of the oil air mix, which increases reliability. Now I'm not sure if I'm judging to quick, but that warm up procedure you filmed was quite abusive... CRINGE If that bike wasn't properly warmed up. Let it get up to temperature and ride it gently going through all the gears before wailing on the throttle.

If a piston is contacting the crank it’s ALWAYS going to contact the crank. Not only that. If a piston contacts a crank the engine isn’t even going to spin over. It will lock up in place it wouldn’t even run. Revs have nothing to do with it. Ktm doesn’t use such a cheap rod that it stretches….. so that being the case you might want to rethink your mechanical analysis of this. Bogging? Check your fuel. Bikes with injectors especially ones you put oil through can clog easily. Especially if you run castor as it changes consistency a lot with temps. Still Bogging? sounds like a lean condition these bikes are known to have. Run good fuel. Haven’t had any issues yet with any of the ones that have been through my shop. Doesn’t mean there won’t be but there’s been 0 of the issues your reporting on.
@moto-x
@moto-x Жыл бұрын
Not true at all… Production tolerances, some made it through, some didn't, some riders are slower and don't rev it hard and some do, causing it to smack the crank halves. Look it up it’s a known issue hence why the manufacturers are making different pistons…The bogging isn’t one or two guys having the issue, there’s a ton of them that do this regardless of the fuel or oil used. The issue isn’t just bogging, they cut out, load up and there’s a number of mechanical items that can cause them. Go look at how many low hour TBIs are for sale for dirt cheap, there’s a reason…skirt smacks crank, cracks skirt, pieces break off, wedged around the motor, motor locks up, want to keep running, cranks snap, etc.

@@moto-x regardless of production tolerances your trying to tell me an engine can spin through metal on metal contact. Factually It cannot. Engines like that wouldn’t leave the factory. If you want to tell me there’s a faulty casting I could believe it and believe a piston to crack or break. It happens. However for you to claim the piston skirt is contacting the crank and the engine can turn over properly is pure and simply impossible sir. It would be noticed during assembly.

@@krazed0451 yep. Sure did. this is kindergarten level engine building for ya bud. If it doesn’t contact the crank when you rotate by hand it won’t contact the crank at rpm. Speed of rider doesn’t have anything to do with a piston skirt contacting a crank. You’d have to use a spaghetti noodle for a rod. This isn’t rocket science. 😂😂😂😂😂😂

@@user-mo8tm4jw2l No, it's a 2 stroke engine. I'm aware of how they operate, if you think the additional forces and heat expansion involved at high RPM don't close up tolerances at all you're detached from the real world. Your cute little supposition that a piston can't rotate past the crank if there is any contact at all is laughable, too. Have you ever built an engine of any kind? I've built one or 2 over the years... I'm guessing you stopped at kindergarten engine building.
