Every repair shop I’ve been to has had something negative to say about the previous shops I’ve been to…where I am it’s a small community of reliable repair shops and I try to support the ones I trust the most, but lately I’ve been tackling even the most daunting jobs which I’d never consider in the past by first educating myself through people like Morgan and the content they put out…we’ll done! If I were in your area I’d be a customer for sure…

you are absolutely right about the foaming and i seen the video you are talking about, lol. thats one reason the shock needs to be under pressure to keep it from foaming and why you cant run shock oil in forks. you do some really great videos.

You might mention that before you take the shock off you can measure the length its set at. That when you can match it putting it back on to get the sag correct or at least really close.

You made it look ez. When I worked in the bike shop’s we just never did anything like that. I personally don’t keep a bike long enough to where one out. lol. I did buy an XR500R way back in the day that had a bad rear shock and I just bought a new one from progressive suspension. In fact I’m in the process of trading in my 2020 DRZ 400 with only 4K on it for a new Husqvarna 701 Enduro right now so in April I be on a husqvarna. Lol thanks for sharing my friend.

@highlandcycles I'm always surprised how much air comes out of oil when you put it under vacuum because of dissolved air inside the oil that you can't see.

That foam is nitrogen mixed with the oil as the rubber bladder is micro pours. Reason why service schedule is short with bladders compared to stock piston so they say.
@derrickredlin
@derrickredlin 6 ай бұрын
It's absolutely true. Bladder res works for about 2-3 months before substantial gas leakage. Piston shock works for about 12-15 months. 433% increase in service life. Replace and grease a new o-ring, install it properly, friction is virtually undetectable, and you just gained a year of proper damping performance
@hawiehawhaw
@hawiehawhaw Жыл бұрын
Air has to come in somehow to create foam right? Is it possible a leaky bladder causes the oil to foam up? Or does this happen on stock shocks too? If so would the air most likely get sucked in through a bad shock seal?
@highlandcycles
@highlandcycles Жыл бұрын
It can be a few different things. Bladders will let nitrogen through slowly but so will the o rings on a piston style. The moral of the story (that I should have mentioned in the video) is that you need to service your suspension more often.

I noticed in a more recent vid you pre filled the shock body first and did not fill through the high speed . Is one way perferred over the other ?
@highlandcycles
@highlandcycles 8 ай бұрын
I like filling the body first. The other way works too. I feel like you have to bleed less when you do the body first.

Is it still possible to bleed a wp shock this way that hasn't had a bladder kit fitted? I've always been under the impression the standard shock with the piston needed the bleed machine?
@highlandcycles
@highlandcycles 2 жыл бұрын
Yes you can bleed a stock one this way. You just have to set the piston height afterwards

Got a stupid question..when shock is mounted..tighten to spec ..should there be any play or more like side to side wiggle in top hem joint/ bearing ? I have absolutely no up and down..but shock up top has wiggle..like it is tight and not clunky...but floating..if that make sense??

So, im in the process of doing this with a stock WP shock with the piston still. So, when I first started bleeding it with the cup I had a ton of big bubbles come out and the piston would skip a little when I would start the down stroke. No biggie I thought...its my first time trying this so I figured I just didnt do the first steps very well and kept pumping. After about a half hour of pumping eventually everything seemed smooth and no more bubbles where coming out but when I took the shock out of the vice and tipped it straight up it seemed like it may have sucked a air pocket in through the cup and I would have to start the whole process over. I think im on my 3rd attempt now... not sure if im doing something wrong or if I just have a ton of air hiding in it somewhere still.

it looks that when you were bleeding it through the pot at an angle, the bolt hole was not the Most Upper pain t in the system and air pocket could have stayed in the reservoir above bladder.

It seems that way but the only place it can hide is up in that little spot. By forcing the piston in and out a bunch and hard, you force that out.

Maybe show orientation of the seals closely, not all know which way they should be installed. None of the dealers here will charge a shock unless they worked on it. imagine it is a liability or a money grab thing.
