Fun fact legend says that in 1431 when Crusaders led by cardinal Cesarini approached the Czech town of Domažlice, Hussite soldiers started singing this song and the crusadors fled. (It is only a legend, but the crusadors were defeated anyway).

Fun fact: Jan Hus' last words at death were a variant of the famous "Jesus Prayer" used most in Eastern Christianity, and in fact Hus is considered almost an unofficial martyr by some Orthodox especially in Czech-Slovak lands.

@@Peristerygr @Kill the taiping and the prots - The very early stages of the Reformation took issues with late medieval RC innovations, like Mass in Latin instead of vernacular, priestly celibacy, and not serving the Eucharist with both Body AND Blood. Which Orthodox never did, nor did West before Great Schism. But by the time Orthodox and Prots made serious contact more, they went WAY too far and started being against Saints and other good doctrines.

I enjoy searching historical people or events, so this time was for Hussites. Several days later, I found there was very short reference of Huss in School text book. I didn't thought I would find him in Korean text book, so it was pretty glad to see him. Sadly there wasn't Ziska or Hussite war.

Hi man, well if you the history, hussites were winning from 1419 till 1434, then key battle of Lipany was lost where some softer hussites joined catholic side so extreme hussits losts. However political conclusions were still hussites victory, since Czech Kingdom kept the law authorizing free religion. Which was quite unique at that time. This lasted till the war between the Czech and Habsburgs in 1620... so almost 200 years. So wagon boys DE FACTO won their fight for freedom of choice for religion. :) Sorry my passion for history... Když vydrží první nejsilnější útok a nezačnou utíkat, nepřátelská armáda se zasekne před jejich vozy a ti vzadu tlačí na ty v předu a husitum stačí střílet do nich a mlátit je jak obilí cepama.

Part of this hymn was used by Smetana in his symphonic poem Ma Vlast (my fatherland), wich also contains the famous Vltava piece. The hymn is used in the last two pieces, Tabor and Blanik, which are in my opinion even better than the more famous Vltava and both have wonderful stories behind, the Hussite Wars for Tabor, and the legend of Saint Veceslaus and his army of horsemen hidden under a mountain for Blanik.

So there was a Protestant reformation in Central Europe too. Jan Hus the founder of the Czechoslovak Church (Hussites). Huldrych Zwingli the founder of Swiss Church (Zwinglianism). Jean Calvin the founder of the French Church (Calvinism). Mennonites in The Netherlands (Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Hauts-de-france, Normandy and Brittanny). All suppressed during the counterreformation by the Catholic Church headed by Italy, Spain and Portugal.

“Taborites announced the Millennium of Christ, and declared that there would be no more servants or masters, that all property would be held in common, and that there would be no more taxation. They promised that people would return to a state of pristine innocence. Some historians have found parallels to modern nationalist revolutionary movements. Murray Bookchin, for example, argued that Tábor was an early example of anarcho-communism.”
@MartinGreywolf

There is a discrepancy between the vocals and Czech subtitles here - I'm fairly sure that it's because the vocals are sung in modern Czech and subtitles are written in the original 1420s Czech which had different spellings and slightly different pronounciations. Although why the chorus has "Ze konecne vzdycky s nim svitezite" while the vocals sing "Ze konecne s nim vzdycky svitezite" I don't know. Maybe the lyrics were copypasted from a different place than the song, multiple versions of a song 600 years old aren't an uncommon thing. For other translation nitpicks, Hauptmann/hejtman/however you want to spell it is probably better translated as Captain rather than a commander, it was a specific rank rather than a general term. Sik, in the "drz se siku sveho" is better translated as unit (in the military sense) rather than a formation, but the term can mean both in Czech, that specific line tells you to both keep to your unit *and* hold formation. The rest is pretty much spot on.
@KarlosTheMighty

There is discrepancy, however the song is sung in archaic Czech, no one talks like this today. Some of the words in the subtitles are Slovak for some reason.

Hey just so you know the lyrics you used are somewhat older while the song is newer, so they don't exactly match vocally, lyrics use older pronunciation while the song uses modern equivalents, also "že konečně vždycky s ním svítězte " has a flipped word in it, it should be "Že konečně s ním, vždycky zvítězíte " (the s in the svitezit may be an old pronunciation but it should probably be with z)

Its more of an military song imho. The song mostly mentions military instructions to bolster morale and discipline ("hold your ranks", "follow the orders of your commander", "do non run from the enemy", "dont fear enemy numbers", "protect comrades from your unit"). Btw before Hussite wars Bohemian lands were as religious as other countries in Europe. Actually those wars are the reason we are atheists now. We were catholic, then Hussite, had large religious war for decades, were both catholic and hussite, had another major religious war, hussites were killed... And so on. Czech history teaches us that religion only divided Czech people and made them kill each other. Before Hussite wars we were the strongest country in the central Europe and most Kaisers of the HRE were Czech and that period. It all seemed nice and Bohemia was going to rule. Well, one religious civil war, another religious civil war and another and bam. We were gone. Growing up as a kid in Czech republic, I did not even know what religion is and understood what it means. When i first met the concept (I had a classmate when i was around 10 years old who was from catholic family) I was already too old for it and viewed it as a fairy tale. Basically when she would tell me about Jesus, for me it was like if she was telling me about dragons, orcs and elves.

An interesting fact is that the melody of the chant should correspond to the original from the 15th century, because in the 19th century the so-called "Jistebnický kancionál", a collection of songs from the 15th century, was found, where this chant also contains musical notation.
