KTVA's Dave Goldman gives the final signoff for KTVA Channel 11 News, thanking the founder of KTVA and pioneer of Alaska broadcasting Augie Hiebert and the many others who supported us along the way.

Anchorage, Alaska market has been hit hard by this Coronavirus crisis first ABC/FOX KTBY/KTUY shut down a majority of its news department to only one news department then this with CBS KTVA consolidating with KTUU NBC it's sad. So essentially Anchorage has for a size able market only one news department. Town like Helena Montana this would make sense this doesn't... it's sad when things like this happen...

Old timers will tell you that there was once a great deal of competition in the local media. Two giant newspapers---Daily News delivered in the morning and the Anchorage TImes delivered in the later afternoon. My father read the ADN in the morning over breakfast, and the Times over dinner. We had increasingly more and more tv and radio stations (when AM was King). Eventually 3 hotly competing TV news stations-- KTUU CH 2, KTVA CH 11 and KIMO ch 13. All 3 aired 1/2 hour national news and 1/2 hour local news every night. Radio Stations had news staff back then and 5 minutes of news at the top of the hour. I got my start in radio by working in the news department of KYAK AM which was the #1 country music station at the time. It's really sad to see outside corporates come in and take over. To see less and less diversity in news reporting.

@@kristenspencer9751 Yup. Gray Television had to ruin it by purchasing KTUU in 2015, and Coastal by purchasing the then improving ABC station, KIMO (Now KYUR) back in 2010. GCI was the only one trying, but gave up on KTVA and shut it down. KYES, the MyNetworkTV station in Anchorage, took over the CBS affaliation, as GCI sold the affaliate rights to.....you guessed it.......Gray. The owners of KYES, and the number one station, the only news station left in Anchorage......KTUU.

@@friesareyummy good grief! that's a lot of shuffling over a couple year's time. I'm in Palmer now w/o tv for 12 years, and it's been hard to keep up with Anchorage. Thanks for the report!

Loss & change is Always the most difficult. Loss of a tradition is even more so because its multi multi generational of impacting that community but Alaska is so much more. Sending ❤ from the Centennial state 💚💙❤️‍🩹

And Nexstar would morph KTVA into a news-intensive independent, right in line with WJXT (who were also CBS themselves for decades), WHDH (formerly CBS and later NBC), or even WGN.

I'll miss you, not only the people, our airwaves, as consolidation and 1 voice, from outside, Atlanta the center of consolidation, Home of CNN. One Voice speaking for all, Orwellian already, splitting apart, and piece of the pie, another cog. As for the spectrum, does that go to 5G at a high price or used in telecommunications? Like Kmart buying Sears made sense, this doesn't either.

In the Philippines, all the ABS CBN workers are left on August 30, 2020, when Metro Manila is under MECQ. After all, it is not the same as this. Is just only a final newscast but in the Philippines ABS CBN was in cable due to the shutdown. Even the ABS CBN employees left but in October 2020 ABS CBN is back on free TV but this time they called A2Z with a partnership with ZOE TV

Yup. KTVA owners GCI Communications was tired of seeing that station have a low rated news department. Well, low rated compared to KTUU's. They gave up on KTVA, so they sold the affaliate rights to Gray Television, which owns KTUU and KYES, the other station Gray had, and the station they added the CBS affaliation (hence the fancy KYES 5 logo). They kept the news operation online for a month and a half before this newscast aired, the final newscast. GCI kept KTVA on for a few more days after this, for simulcast (simulcasting Gray's KYES, the newer CBS affaliate) reasons, but then went off the air in September 3rd. Edit: They began airing Rewind TV (9/2/2021).
